NFL On Kneeling Players' Protests: 'We Were Wrong' Commissioner Says

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday the NFL admits, "we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest."

The statement, made in a video over Twitter, comes a day after nearly 20 players called on the NFL to take a stronger stance amid a nationwide protest of police brutality against black people.

"We, the NFL, condemn racism and the systematic oppression of Black People. We, the NFL, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest. We, the NFL, believe Black Lives Matter," the NFL stated.

Television viewership and attendees at NFL games will sink even further. Bowing to the mob will do the NFL no good.

Yet,
In 2016, the NFL prevented Dallas Cowboys players wearing decals on their helmets to honor five Dallas police officers killed in the line of duty.

True. As should be abundantly clear by now, the National Football League doesn’t often make exceptions to its dress code policy. In fact, when news outlets reported that the league was preventing the Dallas Cowboys from wearing decals in honor of five officers killed in the line of duty, they noted that decision was “unsurprising”:

The example above and many more - the NFL has fined players - because NFL rules state you cannot modify the uniform.

But since kneeling is NOT modifying - that is acceptable.
Translation - we don't want to upset certain people.

Since 2 out of 3 NFL players are black, the NFL has to appease the players.

They can have policies to appease the players, but the money stops rolling in because no one is watching all those players will simply have to find another line of work. Pat Goodell will go down in history as the man who destroyed the big money making machine called the NFL. He is doubling down on stupid at this point.

2 out of 3 players were black before this week as well.

It is because they feel that after these protests, being on the BLM side of the disagreement will be less damaging to their profits than being on the other side.

It is wrong to assume all black players agree with blm movement just because of their race.

peace to you

A slave joke! Yep no racism exists anymore. None at all! This is a disgrace. Phony Christians.

WOW!!!!
I presume you are an editor for the NYT, are you not??
Only conclusion I can draw from your comprehension of the quote.
If otherwise, you are intentionally assigning inaccurate info to said quote.

Seriously, I would truly love to hear a rational explanation of your interpretation, cuz I see absolutely NO correlation between my statement & your response; ‘specially the “Phony Christians” part!!

JWP, according to the PC crowd, you are not allowed to use certain words (I don't have a link for the list handy) in the vicinity of, or in reference to certain minorities (depending) unless you are one of them and viewed as contributing to their cause in the right way.

If you are one of them but not contributing rightly, or are contributing rightly but not one of them, you will be treading on dangerous ground regardless.

No, there's not really a list, I was just being sarcastic. They will twist whatever you say to mean whatever they want in order to attack you, label you a racist. But if you're white, you're already there. Yes, they are just that racist. I wish I were exaggerating, but I'm not.

Of course. It was actually a very shrewd business move for the NFL to take the side of the players, and the protesters.

The NFL obviously recognized the current state of the union, and quickly realized that if you don't take the players' side, resumption of NFL games being played (i.e. "business as usual") will simply not be possible.

And I believe this will actually benefit the NFL (and the television ratings), rather than have an adverse effect on the ratings and, in turn, attendance figures.

In the prior instance, kneeling by the NFL players during the National Anthem was seen as disrespectful to our country, and our military.

But now, circumstances have changed dramatically. It would no longer be seen as disrespectful, but rather, respectful. A sign of respect to the protesters, and in turn, the civil rights movement.

Furthermore, many avid fans of the NFL (whether viewing games via television, or those attending games in person) belong to the demographic of the protesters, including the violent rioters and/or looters.

American football (especially at the professional level) is a violent game, quite often favored by violent individuals.

So, again, I believe the NFL's decision will actually increase the television ratings, and attendance by the typical fan(s) of the NFL.

Many viewers could care less about Christian values and beliefs. Furthermore, many viewers are not conservative (politically speaking). It quite simply is not the case.

But "time will tell," of course. It will certainly be interesting how all of this "plays out," needless to say.

Defending a classless, tasteless joke. Republican first, Christian second. I see it everyday on this board.

Hope you can hold your breath for a l o o o o o o o n g time!!
Oh, I suspect he’s not quite stupid enough to do it, and I’m not stupid enough to hold my breath waiting, but I would nonetheless love to see him lay it out. I’m tempted to satirize the expected effort, but won’t give in. Actually, I suspect he’s been very deeply indoctrinated by the progressive left to really believe it’s racist, just as they call the blacks you referred to racists, race traitors, and epithets I shan’t mention here. To say Dems play dirty is gross understatement.

Of course black lives matter.

They just don't all matter to black lives matter. They matter least of all to the privileged characters in the NFL.

The ones that matter are the ones they can use to advance their agenda. All the others...well, not so much.

When was the last time there was a demonstration over the killing of a black man by a black cop???

Black cops kill just as many blacks as white cops do. But the only ones that really matter to black lives matter are the blacks killed by whites.

So, it's a fact that some black lives matter more than others...especially to black lives matter.
