I very rarely post here now, but this stunned me!!

What has President Obama done to deserve the Nobel Peace Prize?????

To use a common phrase here I am gobsmacked!! Unbelievable.

I mean, no matter what you think about it, what has he DONE to be honoured in such a way? The last US president to win it was Woodrow Wilson for his 14 Points that ended World War I.

I would really like this to stay on topic and not wander off into still more bashing but to stick with the issue.

Can there be any rationale? I am already hearing comments being sent into the Irish radio station asking the same question and the Irish people LOVE him. Still they are saying, 'What has he done?'

I read THIS and still don't know what he did.

Well, he's apologized to the world for the last nine months...

Maybe that endeared him to the committee.

Your post was the first I had heard of the Nobel Peace Price being awarded to Obama. I find it surprising, especially since he has only been in office since last January.

Here is what I found after doing a bit of research. I will bold some of their reasons...........

The US president, Barack Obama, was today awarded the 2009 Nobel peace prize "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".

The Nobel committee said "only rarely has a person such as Obama captured the world's attention and given his people hope for a better future".
"His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population," the citation said.

The committee said Obama, who only took up the presidency in January, had been acknowledged for his calls to reduce the world's stockpile of nuclear weapons and working for world peace.

"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play."

The first African American to hold the country's highest office, Obama has called for disarmament and attempted – so far without success – to restart the stalled Middle East peace process. He is currently considering whether to increase troop numbers in Afghanistan where the US is mired in an eight-year-old conflict.

The choice of Obama for the prize from a field of more than 200 candidates astounded international commentators, in part because he took office less than two weeks before the February nomination deadline

As I said above, I am surprised he was given this award this year. Perhaps I am wrong, obviously the committee would think so, but it seems to me that it would have been more prudent to wait several years and see what the results of his efforts. Perhaps results do not figure into their giving awards. For instance in 1994 three people were given the award:

I don't understand, either. He has been President for less than a year and, as far as I know, has not accomplished world peace. Or at least peace in the middle east.

Is it that he is opening doors to the Muslims and Russians? Is it because he seems more open to discussion with volatile world leaders?

Or is it because he is just plain popular in the world's eyes?

So according to that info, it is because he WANTS peace and he has captured the world's eye with his WANT.

If that's all it takes, any Miss America could win that award.

Yet another reason this "peace prize" has fallen into complete and total irrelevance, if not laughability.

It's official: the Nobel Peace Prize is now officially meaningless.

Reminds me of those dopey youth soccer banquets where every kid gets a trophy just for showing up.

On the other hand, the good news is that it ought to make for an entertaining Glenn Beck show this morning.

I was hoping that Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai would have won the prize. He has actually done something to work towards peace in a country being destroyed by the dictator, Robert Mugabe.

That's what makes this an even more ridiculous award...Obama was nominated nine days after he took office!

This is a completely bogus, undeserved "honor." Whether you like Obama or not, he did nothing to earn this "award."

So the world breathed a collective sigh of relief at the HOPE that is Barack Obama? So that means he is instantly worthy of a peace prize?

It also seems that the prize is intended to help further his international initiatives----not because of what he has actually done.

I found the following comments in the Washington Post intereseting. I am not sure if I agree with the writers or not. I have to think on this more. Often through the years I have not understood why this award went to the person selected.

The Nobel prize for peace has always been a political award. That's exactly the point of the prize. It's to raise the awareness of a cause and to raise the profile of a crusader. President Barack H. Obama has made a sea-change in the approach of the most powerful country on earth towards diplomacy on all fronts and towards nuclear disarmament. He is more than deserving of this recognition.

This price will help the US overseas. Under Bush we were hated and now already other countries are showing us more respect when we say ''I'm an American.'' Job well done.

From what I have read so far it caught the White House totally by surprise. Remember this is a selection by Norwegians. It is their award and they can give it to anyone they want for any reason they want.

NBC postulated that this award was more of a slap in GWB's face than anything for Obama.

That could very well be true.


Rbell states, "I plan to build a society where war will not exist. We will all hold hands, be happy, and sing together, with Tiny Tim playing his ukelele..."tiptoe, through the tulips..."

Now: Since we give awards based on what a person intends to do...where's MY Nobel Prize? Actually, keep the trophy...where's my money?!?!

What makes it more sickening is the fawning that the news folks are going ga-ga over Obama's "accomplishment." Even though they themselves admit he's done nothing yet to deserve it.
