Obama: Insulting our longest and closest ally

not really covered by the MSM in the US, of course...

Below is snipped. The whole story is on the link below, a history lesson which explains the significance of the Resolute.

Well, the Resolute is in service for England and, you know, it signifies our gift to England and we say, please forgive us for everything that we've gone through in the past 50, 75 years. We are brothers. The Resolute is a big deal. So when the Resolute is decommissioned, Queen Elizabeth decides, I'm going to take the wood and I'm going to make two desks. I'm going to make one for me and one for the president. This is as significant as France giving us the Statue of Liberty. So she takes this and she makes it into two desks. It's the desk that -- remember little JFK, Jr., he opens up the trap door and he looks, you know, through it? That's the USS Resolute desk. There's only two of them: One with the queen, one with us. FDR put that door there. This is such a historic desk. He put that door there so it would hide his wheelchair so nobody could see his wheelchair. The door is the only place where the seal has the eagle looking down at the arrows instead of the olive branches, okay?

So what does Gordon Brown do? He comes to meet with the president and he gives him a set of pens made from the wood of the USS Resolute to match the desk that should be in a museum. He gives him a matching set of pens. Barack Obama hands him a basket -- I'm not kidding you, hands him a basket of DVDs that he can't play. Mrs. Brown has children's clothing from, like, the best designer in England, you know, all fit the kids. Michelle Obama goes downstairs, grabs a couple of boxes of Marine One helicopter models and gives them to Mrs. Brown: "Here, this is for you." As bad as this is -- because what this shows is either the disdain of the Obamas for England, and I don't know which one's worse, the disdain of England from the Obamas, and you should see -- Michelle Obama, what she has written about England, you know, they were just, they were the linchpin of the slave trade. She has real disdain for them, at least she did when she wrote her term paper. It may be just that, that she hates white England. I'm not sure. But let's give her the benefit of the doubt and let's say they don't hate England. It shows the arrogance. We have people in the State Department, this is all they do is come up with gifts. The arrogance of this administration. They are obviously not listening to the State Department on something this important as a gift. And the worst part of it is the bust of Winston Churchill, there are two of these. England's working in twos: The HMS Resolute desk and the bust of Winston Churchill. This is the most famous bust of Winston Churchill. England gave this bust to the president for the White House right after 9/11 as a sign of standing together: We will stand together united as one. They gave us this historic bust of Churchill. It has been sitting in the oval office since 9/11. Barack Obama says we're going to box this back up and you guys can take it home with you. Gordon Brown says, "No, no, no. Mr. President, that was a gift from the people of Englan d after 9/11. If you want to keep that in one of your museums, you may keep it in one of your museums but please, no, no, that was a gift. That wasn't to borrow. We didn't just lend that out to you. That's a gift from us." He said, "No, that's okay. We don't want it." And he's sending the bust of Winston Churchill back to England. The people of England are going crazy and they're going crazy because our press hasn't even reported on this. What is this guy doing? What is he doing? Stu's got a theory.

There was no state dinner for our visiting friend. There was no joint press appearance in the Rose Garden as the usual protocol has been done by administrations going back to ??? None of that. But there have been plenty of parties at the WH with Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind, & Fire, but the social calendar is so full that we treat the PM from England in such a shabby manner? Give us a break!!

So, if you, too are embarrassed and upset at the shabby way Prime Minister Gordon Brown was treated by the Pres. Obama and would like to apologize Obama's ignorant and ill-mannered insulting treatment of our longest and closest ally, you can write to the British Embassy here:

Sir Nigel Sheinwald, Ambassador
British Embassy in Washington DC
3100 Massachusetts Ave NW
Washington, DC 20008

I am getting my letter to them in the mail this week. And I am also emailing everyone in my address book. Feel free to copy this and paste it in your address book, also. Let's let our friends in the UK that this was unacceptable treatment and the sitting president does not represent us.

It is a slap in the face. Wars have been started for less reasons than this. Just because someone has all the printed money of the US at their disposal does not give a person class. This man has no class.

LE------I seriously doubt that WW3 will be fought over that desk---a"tug-of-war" maybe

But it would take more than just a desk for me to "push the button"----know what I mean???

However------there IS an account where former(and late) British Foreign Minister Nevell Chamberlan "accidently"(really---he forgot it on the way out) left his umbrella in Hitler's Austrian "get-away" during one of those last minute "peace" deals

Story goes----upon arriving back in the UK-----Chamberlain realizes he left his Parasol at Hitlers--------meanwhile back in Austria---before Chamberlain has a chance to phone Hitler----Hitler declares war on the UK----Chamberlain gets on the "Telly" and asks Hitler to send him his umbrella-----to which Hitler responds somethin' like----"Its mine, now!!! Theres no need in sending it back!!!!"

Imagine that----war involving a forgotten umbrella:saint:

PS-----reckon what Churchill had to say when he found out that Chamberlain left his umbrella over in Hitler's Hide-a-way????

I think Obama must be doing ok if this is where the right has to go to criticize. First he didn't release a statement because of a guy hitting an empty bus with a bulldozer and now this. His gift wasn't god enough.

I noticed this report leaves out the most heart warming part of the story, Obama called Brown on his flight back to the UK just to thank him for coming. Brown thinks he must have forgotten something etc... They chat and what do you think Brown was doing, you guessed it, watching his new American movies...

That's the way I heard the story on CNN and MSNBC which did carry it by the way...

No this isn't "where the right has to go to criticize".

It just another example among many of Obama's deficiencies as a leader.

I bet one thing he didn't think of was that whether or not the Dvds were NTSC or PAL coded. A stack of North American Dvds wouldn't do him any good if he didn't have a Dvd player that only played PAL coded Dvds

I thought this was in very poor taste. After spending $757 Billion dollars of our money, I don't think him spending an additional $200.00 on getting a gift for Prime Minister Brown would have hurt us too bad. What a cheapskate!

Not really changing the subject---but

Several years ago I engaged in a mission project along with a group of SBC preachers------to the United Kingdom----England and Wales---we stayed over for 12 days

The English pastor I was guest of for those 12 days---actually pastored a church in Wales in a community called Ogmore-by-Sea----right there on the Atlantic---one of the most beautiful landscapes anyone could imagine

Anyway---2-3 days before we were to depart the UK---that English pastor and his wife took me shopping in Cardiff which was about 50miles from Ogmore

Anything I wanted in the Cardiff mall---anything---for my wife and children back home---for myself-----was at my disposal

Plus---the church at Ogmore collected up a "Love Offering" that was given to me to "spread English pounds into American missions"---I recollect---over 200 British Pounds collected and presented to me on behalf of those church members in Ogmore

It should have been a "gimmie" for Obama and his family----heck----Obama should have at least taken the man to the Washington mall and bought him a soveriner or two---instead---the Brit PM comes over here and is probably forced to wear some sort of armor---some sort of anti-bullet/bomb jacket----in case of some American possibliity of someone over here going "postal"------mercy

Thank you for posting this Lady Eagle!

What an embarrassment the Obama's have brought to the White House. Completely inappropriate on many levels! Shame, Shame, Shame on them! This makes me sick! They have NO clue what they are doing!

Like I said, if the gift he gave another leader or that they didn't hold the press briefing on the lawn but instead had it in the east room are the deficiencies then he must be doing ok. With all the gloom and doom in the world today, those are comparatively good mistakes.

So he has to wear a bullet proof vest and you suggest taking him to the mall???

That wasn't my implication at all

I didn't say----put this jacket on and lets go to the mall

My implication was----it would be nice for Obama to take the fella to the mall and buy him a few things(paid for out of Obama's OWN wallet) and not have to worry about any sort of security----but the President can't do that here in the home of the brave anymore, can he??? Thats why I'd never run for President---because if I win---I could never live normally anymore

I don't think there was anything intentional in this on Obama's part. Its just part of the learning curve of a new administration. It is not the right here in America that is making a big deal out of it, it is the UK press (which has been a lot better at covering Obama than the US media).

Like it or not Obama is our president and represents the United States in his actions. Little things like the quality of the gifts, number of flags displayed, or the seating chart at lunch may seem insignificant in light of the big issues facing us today, but the truth is that in the world of international politics they matter a great deal.

This is a minor mistake the new administration can learn from. I am much more concerned with their assault on our economy.

I see your point blackbird but I think he still could have if he wanted to. One call from the white house and he could have any mall in DC to himself. They might go before or after regular business hours to limit the disruption, but BO could have that mall cleared and open for just he and Brown with one phone call. That might have been a good idea.

From the DVDs to the bust it just shows a lack of understanding on BOs part of the delicate protocols of international politics. I am sure it is not a mistake they will repeat.

Storm in a teacup. Obama knows that Brown is a washed-up lame duck and won't be around in 14 months maximum, so what's the point of the VIP treatment? Thank you for writing to the British Embassy but I don't know anyone over here who is angry about it apart from Brown and his immediate hangers-on; most people dislike Brown heartily and are if anything mildly amused by him being put in his place like this.

The issue is bigger than Obama knowing/thinking Brown is a washup. Insults on this level have no place among longstanding allied nations.

True. But don't look for too much offence over it this side of The Pond. Obama may have a little difficulty next time he asks Brown for more British troops for Afghanistan I suppose, so his snub may yet bite him on the butt, but we'll see...
