Obama to business owners: 'You didn't build that'

President Obama, in a speech to supporters, suggested business owners owe their success to government investment in infrastructure and other projects -- saying “if you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that.”
Obama’s comment Friday during a campaign stop in Roanoke, Va., came just days after he urged Congress to extend tax cuts enacted during the Bush administration only to families earning less than $250,000 annually -- part of his argument that top earners have an obligation to pay more to trim the deficit.

Why does Obama only want to talk about taxes when it comes to the deficit?

He never mentions the possibility of spending less.

BTW - no amount of taxes is ever going to match his obsessive need to spend.

Especially when the spending is just a money laundering system to funnel money back to him.

Here is the gist of what he said:

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen,” he said. “The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.”

Read that carefully, people. If you own a business you didn't build it. Your smart idea and hard work didn't do it. Every tangential, distantly related factor in your life (i.e. your 2nd grade teacher, roads and bridges, George Washington, etc.) played a huge role in it. Notice that the factors he mentions are all government entities. This is ludicrous. I hope this sound/video bite shows up in Romney ads. It's priceless.

Also note that the GOVERNMENT only allows you to thrive as a businessperson.

While I'm glad that Obama agrees that Al Gore didn't invent the internet, the internet was not invented so companies could make money off it. Originally it was a network of computers allowing Defense Department scientists a method of exchanging data.

Actually it can be argued (and I did in a paper for a graduate IT course) that Samuel F.B. Morse privately invented the internet in the 1840's.

He created an electrically energised data transmission system based upon a material medium (copper wire) as the transmission hardware which used a Binary Coded Language (International Morse Code) as the transmission software.

He did receive a congressional grant but it was his invention not the governments.

He managed to gain the support of Congress and received a grant of $30,000 to set up an experimental line between Baltimore and Washington, a distance of about 40 miles. Despite a number of major setbacks it took less than a year to complete and on the 28th May 1844 he sent the famous first message which read 'What hath God wrought?'

With this system operating interest grew very fast. Many of the railroad companies saw the possibilities of the new system and they started to have systems installed. In fact after only four years more than 5000 miles of line had been installed to take the new telegraph system. In addition to this orders soon started to come in from Europe as they heard about the system and how it performed. With all of these orders Morse became very wealthy.

Along with this success came trouble. His former partners filed law suits against him as they felt they had contributed to the system. This legal battle took many years to settle and cost a great deal of money, but eventually Morse won and was able to hold onto all his ideas.

Sorry Al!! Sam beat you to it by over a century.
Notice also that he gave God the credit.

This was the absolute dumbest thing any politician has ever said.

He can't help himself.

He has no concept or understanding of what it takes for a person to invest their life savings, mortgage everything they own and then work 70-80 hours a week for years to make a business a success.

All he understands is that he wants to penalize them for their hard work and give their money to non productive bottom feeders, of which he has always been one.

Take a line out of context and you can make it say anything you want it to say.

Bold words are mine for emphasis.

Mitt Romney is so desperate to create a distraction from the growing call for release of his tax returns, he and his army of Republicans and other apologists, have taken to throwing out any and all smears they can think of with the hope that something sticks in the news cycle. The most alarmingly dishonest of Romney’s false accusations against President Obama is the taking of a single line from a speech our president made about the importance of investing in infrastructure and pretending he was slamming business owners. A Romney press release today makes their deceit clear. It trumpets: “OBAMA, TO BUSINESS OWNERS: ‘YOU DIDN’T BUILD THAT.’”

This interpretation of President Obama’s remarks is a bald-faced lie. Here’s the one sentence in the context of the speech:

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Let's examine Obama's remarks one sentence at a time.

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.

This is true. The statement is so generic it must be true. But successful business people don't think of help "along the line" as being what Obama describes. Successful business people give credit to mentors that helped them in their specific business endeavor, or else give credit to investors, or else to family members that encouraged them to follow their dreams of owning a business.

There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.

There was a great teacher somewhere in everyone's life. But this teacher is probably not responsible for instilling the entrepreneurial spirit in someone. Note that teachers are government employees.

Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.

So we are going to praise the founding fathers because the Apple iPod has been successful? Notice that the creators of the American system are government people.

Somebody invested in roads and bridges.

Well, duh. BTW, it's not an investment it's taxing the citizens and spending the money for the greater good. Nobody gets inspiration for creating a new product by contemplating how wonderful the interstate highway system is. Notice again that Obama is giving credit to a government program.

If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that.

Well, e-x-c-u-u-u-u-s-e me, but I've got a business, and yes, I built it.

Somebody else made that happen.

Must be those elves that come out when I'm sleeping.

The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The internet wasn't originally conceived for commerce. But someone had a brilliant idea to adapt a government run entity for profit.

Really, this whole "it takes a government to be successful" is sickening. Obama ought to be ashamed at himself.

I heard the recording of this speech, and the crowd was going wild. That shows exactly who Obama appeals to, folks who think they are victims. They think all rich people inherited their wealth, or were members of the "good ol' boy society", or just got lucky. These folks constantly feel sorry for themselves and blame everyone but themselves for their lack of success in life.

And Obama is telling them it is right to rob the rich and give to the poor. He is the modern day Robin Hood.

Obama Hood

Has a ring to it, doesn't it?

This all boils down to the fact that the government never created one penny of wealth. Then the government (Obama) spends money on a bailout or making a job, the money was handed to them on a silver platter called tax dollars.

When a citizen starts a business, unless he or she is from a rich family, they are risking usually everything they have to get the resources to even start a business. It takes guts, leadership, foresight, and a vision to even have a chance of success. Add to that patience, determination, and hard work. Starting a small business is not for the faint at heart or constant worriers.

These people realize this is the engine that creates prosperity for all of us. It is the ultimate irony that the government that does not know how to manage anything, puts up roadblock after roadblock to those trying to make a go of an idea to make a profit.

Obama is already accusing Romney of shipping jobs overseas. Why do jobs get shipped overseas? Because of stupid federal, state, and local regulations that drain the life blood out of a business.
