If you require someone to volunteer ... have they actually volunteered?

In the military, we use the term "voluntold."

We need more people helping serve our communities and our nation and fewer couch spuds. Those who thnk this strikes of Naziam are either very ignorant of history or just want to cause trouble through their hatred of Obama.

Volunteer and youth programs abound: The Salvation Army, BSA, GSA, the Red Cross, and the list goes on. If Obama were about promoting "community service," he would be promoting and commending these organizations. He's about something else entirely.

I think a Kansas man's analyses of Obama's campaign and policies are insightful and right on target.

There is no such thing as forced volunteering. Throwing the word "volunteer" into the mix is just a way to dress it up to make it more palatable. I will never allow my kids to participate.

sounds like forced labor or else. I am sure volunteer work through your church will not count toward his plans for all of us.
community service is used as a punishment in court. nothing wrong when it's actually volunteer, but when your told you have too, then there's something wrong with it unless you've committed a misdemeanor crime.
Promoting community service is one thing, but making it a requirement is another thing completely. Of course when it is required it is no longer volunteer, and I agree, it become slavery.
Aren't christians already doing volunteer work?

This is just one more example of the very small minds of liberals. It is also a very clear example that liberals have no idea what freedom means. They apparently think freedom is defined as " Letting liberals do, through government, what ever they want". mandating public service in this manner is un-American and un-Constitutional. But then Liberals do not care about that pesky constitution any way. Especially BHO

Forced volunteerism is not freedom. Your right, it is therefore unconstitutional, it violates the right to freedom.

Where do you read this is going to be forced? The plan encourages young people to volunteer and rewards them the college grants. And this bad how?

Might be a good idea to require to those who use the Government to live off of. Through Welfare Checks and such to either have a job or go serve others. Instead of sitting around sleeping late and for some dealing drugs and other illegal life. They might find out that there are others who life is much worse than their selves.

Why is that the thinking is we must serve through the government in order to serve the nation?

People serve by providing goods and services others need and want. They exchange these with others through money. Government "service" in the context being advertised is just a way to get more control over what people do or don't do. There will be all kinds of rules to be followed with these service programs. People far away and removed from the problems will decide who needs help, what kind of help, and how that help should be given.

It works much better when local people make the decisions. They can see first hand where their time and money goes. The people helped also can see that the help was provided by neighbors and not some imaginary bid daddy in Washington.

The problem is, I don't read *how* any of this is going to be accomplished. I click on "Agenda" on the change.gov site, and I get a paragraph that says "we have plans." It doesn't tell what the agenda is, it just says they have an agenda. There are no specifics given anywhere.

I click on America Serves, and I read where they want to expand some existing progams, and offer credits, and "set a goal for middle and high school students"...but no details on how it will work.

Would you allow a student with no community service to graduate high school? If so, then how is this "system of service" going to be any different than what we have today?

In other words, if we don't *require* it, then what's actually going to change?

What we have here is a lofty goal by someone who is trying to capitalize on their experience as a community organizer...but what were the results of that?

I agree...

When I was a youth pastor, I had to keep logs for my teens because they were required to have so many hours of community service in order to graduate.. and many events in our youth group were counted as CS.

That was in another county.. but I would love to see it as a requirement here in this county.

The ME Generation needs to learn how to serve others...

Our State Convention each year has blessing blitz's which are organized CS projects to show the love of Christ...

Instead of complaining about Obama's CS agenda... let's step up and really show him how it is supposed to be done!

It counts here in WV.. see my previous post.

I had to keep a log of hours for my youth... and sign off on it.

I think it is a great idea.
It teaches children that life is not all about themselves...

I even got to minister to some because they recognized that they could accomplish their community service requirements through my youth group....

A few even got saved.

Try:

your public library
your local hospital
your local free clinic
you nearest elementary school library
your closest food bank
your closese church with an ESOL project
etc., etc., etc.

I am amazed that anyone could ask your question?

Volunteer to read to children in school
Volunteer to play games in a nursing home
Ask your town what your church can do to help clean up your town.
Volunteer to help your neighbor...

I too am amazed at people who don't want support Community service simply because the wrong man won the White House...

It is nothing new that Obama is proposing...
He stole the idea off of Bush 1... and the "thousand points of light" speech.

Of course Bush One probably stole it off of someone else...

But it all goes back to "doing unto the least of these"... Jesus' teaching.

That one would take years to work through the courts. It might mess up the mortar in that "wall of separation."

Seriously...I'd be scared to let my church participate. With government money comes government control.

Besides...we do tons of volunteer work already.

The devil is always in the details isn't it though?

If it is the liberals that are pushing this - then it's a safe bet that it's an agenda to further the liberal's goals.

In other words, if we don't *require* it, then what's actually going to change?

If it's "required" then it ceases to be "voluntary" doesn't it?
