When I was young, maybe 11 or 12, my mother took us to a charismatic church that a neighbor invited us to. At some point during the festivities, I was shuffled off to a Sunday school class. The teacher was teaching about (gasp) the gifts of the spirit. Then she held up this cheesey refugee from a dairy-queen kids-meal prize that she was offering to all the children in the class. It was a plastic glove with some stuff printed on it about the Holy Spirit and she wanted to give one to each of us. The only catch was, you had to speak in tongues to get one. Much like the OP joke, just start making some sounds and let the Holy Spirit take over, right? I was never more ready to leave church in my life. Of course I didn't get a hand puppet because I wouldn't make the sounds they wanted me to make for it. The sad thing is, looking back, I believe they were trying to get me saved.
Mar 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
If you are looking at this verse to support the assertion that tongues has not ceased, why do you stop there?
Mar 16:18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Lets get this thing out in the open. We can get some rattlers together and we can see if this thing be of God or not real quick.
I know some sincere Christians who believe the charismatic hype. I think they love the Lord, but they have been deceived in this matter. I know some who have come out of it, and they can attest to the feelings that they experienced but those feelings are not the Spirit.
