Can anybody in the UK tell me if it's normal to be sent to such a prison for contempt of court? Here, you really have to do something violent or be a big dealer or something to be sent to a maximum security facility like TR is in.

Yes, you can be jailed for contempt. This is not something new but has been the case for decades if not centuries. Yaxley-Lennon has been jailed also as a result of his suspended sentence being activated. He has been moved to a max security prison in part because it affords him a greater degree of personal protection against his perceived threat of violence from Muslim fellow inmates.
Burden of proof is on the prosecution here too. But if you have someone standing in the court building broadcasting what he considers "evidence" that could result in a wrongful conviction or a mistrial how do you stop that happening? You must have a sanction in place to protect the due process of justice.
The writer obviously has no inkling of how the British constitution works.
