In 2 Peter 2:20, the terms ιδιας επιλυσεως can be fairly translated literally as “of one’s own loosening.” Although this referred to the original inspiration of Scripture, it can also be applied in principle to the interpretation of Scripture through discernment illumined by the Holy Spirit. Many cults have been born and much heresy created when one individual “loosed the Scriptures” by himself or herself such as Mary Eddy Baker Patterson Gulliver Jones, Judge Russell, or Ellen G. White.

Although I reject the Roman Catholic teaching that only the RC can interpret the Scriptures properly, I do believe the proper interpretation Scripture is a kind of consensus produced by the Holy Spirit among the Bible-believing, orthodox church. I don’t trust these individuals who think they have a corner on truth or a special revelation or word of knowledge that God has given them.

When a man preaches and others listen on the radio they are not open to discussion and correction. But when a pastor does he is opening himself up to examination and correction by his listeners.

When I lived in the south near San Antonio, weekly I had to deal with the baloney people heard on the radio and listened to on TV. When I started teaching them how to study they quit listening to those preachers and studied more. They also shared their faith more and started making disciples. I think the proof is in the disciple it makes.

I would say that obedience to scripture is what keeps us straight. I have never seen anyone who shares their faith and disciples others ever stray far. If intellectual knowledge and listening to preaching kept us from sin then you would not ever see pastors and teachers get into sin.

When listening to other preachers we must always listen with a discerning heart. I think we all have to agree that not everyone is going to agree on everything all the time. (Just look at the different opinions everybody has on the board) Yet we can always get something from somebody else I believe. Sometimes though you have to eat the meat and spit out the bones.

</font>
Notice the qualifiers of good Bible preaching. You were listening to the wrong preachers. The same things happens when you read heretical writing.

Listen to other good preachers and then research what they say for yourself. Everyone has a responsibility to do that no matter who you are.

If the Holy Ghost has given us the message, why would we need credit for it? All this worry about plagerizing is silly. I plagerize God everytime I preach.

Ok I do enjoy listening to preaching all the time. I download sermons onto my MP3 player and listen in the car and while walking or jogging...it helps me in my personal studying and in my growth/learning as a preacher. I learn not just from what is said but how it is said. I learn how sermons/preachers are easy to follow and which ones lose me. I love to listen to the preachers of old and even occassionally preachers that I would not normally be exposed to. Like someone mentioned above you must take everything you hear with proper discernment and Holy Spirit guidance to not be side-tracked...but like a good commentary I may have to pick the bones out of my catfish but I do enjoy my catfish on the bone and so teh extra work or danger of choking is not an issue...now my kids need it filet style...deboned and all so they can readily chew it...and so is how and what they hear as far as preaching/teaching.

Ps. Talking of catfish..is making me hungry and it is only 7:24 am here [IMG] Plus I've not found a good catfish place here in Japan...sushi I can handle but it is not the same as heavy battered deep fried cajun cooked catfish...can I get an AMEN!!! :D

Not pastoring at the moment, but, even when I was, I get preached to every day from Monday to Friday.
First, by Alistair Begg, then by John Mc'Arthur, then by Woodrow Kroll, then by RC Sproul, then by David Hacking, then by Dr. Vernon Mc'Gee.
Wonderful preachers, all of them, Calvinist or otherwise.
Top slot goes to Alistair Begg.
This scotsman can preach !

Oh? Then contextualize it and explain it. </font>
2Pe 1:19
¶ We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
2Pe 1:20
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
2Pe 1:21
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost

There's the context for ya.

Here's the explaination.

Peter was making the point that even though he and others had a vision of the Glorified Christ before the crucifixion; The Scripture is a more SURE word in that it cannot be interpreted nor was it given by any other than the Holy Spirit of God.

You sir, however took it totally out of context and tried to apply it to your point. While that may make for good preaching to the unlearned, it makes for terrible doctrinal discussion: to say nothing of casual discussion.

"Prophecy of the scripture"...cannot be interpreted nor applied willy nilly. It MUST be applied as God intended it and MUST be understood as He meant it to be received.

This is NOT to say that your point is invalid. I agree with your point. We should be very careful to whom we listen. But I am sure that you could have found a better Scripture to make your point. You are after all very adept with Scripture, I have noticed. But not this time.
So sorry... [IMG]

I found that a sure-fire way to get a nap on Sunday afternoon was to listen to the tape of my sermon from that morning. Since I knew what the preacher was fixing to say, it totally relaxed my brain and I was out like a fat girl in dodgeball.

To me, listening to the best preachers on the radio is very helpful when I do it critically. I observe how they handle a phrase or an illustration, and how they never wander from the point or belabor a point. I'm thinking mostly of Adrian Rogers and David Jeremiah.

Yet, I find the most spiritual value in reading old sermons from the greats like DeWitt Talmage, John Wesley, Joseph Parker, and (of course) Spurgeon. (I'm exercising a lot of restraint here, lest I spend an hour listing worthy pulpiteers of old.)

Seems like they don't make 'em like that any more.

Or, if they do, their churches are so small we never hear about them. [IMG]

I preach and teach at my church, though I'm not the pastor.

If I were a pastor, I suppose the same now. I like to listen to tapes/sermons by Larry Winkler, Sharp, Earl J. Farley, Mike Bagwell, etc.

Of course, the main person to "preach" to us is the Holy Spirit if we're walking as we ought, however, the Lord does use men of God by the Word of God.

Iwork midnights for my second job, as a security guard. I spend most of the night in my car, so I am studying seminary materials or listening to the radio. I hear Ch. Stanley, John Maxwell and D. Jeremiah each and every night at work. .

I need to hear good preaching also. Even when I disagree, it gives me something to study on for personal study. Different study.. pastoral study vs personal study. One is preparing food for the congregation, the other is eating my meal.

Preach to me

I enjoy Charles Stanley preaching, he is well versed in the scriptures and well educated. I find both of equal importance.

Personally, it has gotten to the point that i need to listen to other people preach...because i need to be fed and nourished in order to feed my flock.
I will try to listen to sermons online from pastors and preachers that i know and respect...and the sermon audio site is a great too for that.
Conferences and revival meetings at other churches are also a great source for this.

Good topic...

Of course I get preached to often, I'm married (ha, ha). Seriously, I listen to every preacher I can. I hear local pastors, listen to the radio, and read books of sermons. After 35 years in the ministry there is one thing I have learned, I still have a lot to learn. From these other men I glean ideas to study, illustrations, new ways to present a point, etc. Growing in my homilitical skills is one way I believe I grow in Christ.

At my age, I have discovered that the more answers I hear, the more questions I have.

Hence, I appreciate listening to other preachers. The main point is this: No preacher should be preaching at someone, but rather about Someone.

I believe it was Mr. Spurgeon who said that a sermon with the Christ is incomplete and so our listening concentration should be to listen to the Lord in every message.

Cheers,

Jim
