In 2 Peter 2:20, the terms ιδιας επιλυσεως can be fairly translated literally as “of one’s own loosening.” Although this referred to the original inspiration of Scripture, it can also be applied in principle to the interpretation of Scripture through discernment illumined by the Holy Spirit. Many cults have been born and much heresy created when one individual “loosed the Scriptures” by himself or herself such as Mary Eddy Baker Patterson Gulliver Jones, Judge Russell, or Ellen G. White.Originally posted by av1611jim:
Yes, Peter did say that but you have completely decontextualized it. (if I may invent a new word.)
Paul said, 2Ti 2:2
And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

Although I reject the Roman Catholic teaching that only the RC can interpret the Scriptures properly, I do believe the proper interpretation Scripture is a kind of consensus produced by the Holy Spirit among the Bible-believing, orthodox church. I don’t trust these individuals who think they have a corner on truth or a special revelation or word of knowledge that God has given them.
