Public School Gone Wild

A 13-year-old was handcuffed and hauled off to a juvenile detention for burping in class, according to a lawsuit filed against an Albuquerque school principal, a teacher and city police officer.

The boy was transported without his parents being notified in May after he "burped audibly" in PE class and his teacher called a school resource officer to complain he was disrupting her class.

Isn't that common? All those calisthenics contort the body and trapped gas "escapes".

I now (rather unfortunately) work in a K-5 school.

The actions and attitudes of some of the children would shock most of you.

I'm talking about excrement sculptures in the middle of the bathroom floor with footprints leading into the carpeted hallway -- on purpose. Or standing on the top of bathroom fixtures so that they can turn the ceiling tiles yellow (also). Or perhaps grinding crayons in the pencil sharpener then rubbing them on painted walls will suffice.

Two or three real fights a day that draw blood. A 1st grader caught with a 7" blade knife. Graffiti scratched into the paint in every hallway, etc. Creative use of chocolate milk and juice. Every sink running full blast every day, all day, with paper stuffed in the drains.

And from there it gets worse... :BangHead:

And, remember, this is kindergarten through 5th grade...

That seems like overkill! Kids do that and yes, if they're disrupting the class by being rude, by all means, have them leave. But to call security? I'd have sent the student to the office and if he refused to leave, then you simply call the office and they can send an escort. If they happen to send an officer, then fine, but why would they over that unless the student is violent?

I've called for an officer to come to the classroom ONCE. It was for what appeared to be a gang-related rivalry turning into a fight.

That's what they are there for. Not to handle burping.

Maybe the teacher needs to come work out here and see what constitutes a true emergency and need for an officer to respond. LOL

Ignoring silly, childish behavior like that also works wonders or joking with the kid about it rather than escalating it by reacting as if the kid is a criminal.

Good grief!

glfredrick, if you think k-5 school bathrooms are gross, you've never seen a girl's bathroom in high school. Yuck yuck yuck yuck. They're ten times worse than boys.

I wish they'd put metal detectors in ALL the schools. Especially city ones. Blah.

We would be better off with common-sense detectors- for the teachers and administrators.

I have had occasion to work as a mentor to deaf students in an elementary school. I now officially PITY anyone who works as a teacher. They should get combat pay and free psychiatric care for PTSD annually.

No, I was sent there to earn a check and to offer an example of humble service (and to have a RIPE mission field) while I pursue ministry in an area that is about 3% evangelized. I guess you could call me a missionary with a "tentmaking" sort of bi-vocational job. I don't care that I have to serve others in a debased way as long as I can also be serving Christ on this mission field!

I preach this Sunday in view of a call...

I also work P/T in secular education and it IS a ripe mission field.

I don't know where you work, but this is nowhere close to the norm for an elementary school. The school where I work is neat, orderly, and the kids largely well-behaved. And many of them come from poverty and broken homes. We have some issues, of course, but what you're talking about is clearly an ingrained lack of discipline.

If teachers would focus on relationships instead of maintaining an "us against them" mentality, it would be easier for everyone.

My sister is a Principal in a elem school in Baton Rouge

One day someone came running into the school office yellin'

FIGHT!!! FIGHT IN THE PARENT'S PARKING LOT!!!

So she runs out to see first hand the "MayLay"

Two parents had been jocking for position in the parking lot child pickup area and were now in full blown "Thrilla in Manilla!!!"

One of the parents was the Superintendant of Education's WIFE!!!!!!!!!!

She calls the "Po-Po" on more parents than students!!!!

I work at a brand new -- as in it was not there before July of this year -- school in an underprivleged area of Milwaukee.

The teachers and para-professionals are beating their heads on the walls trying to build relationships with these kiddos, but many just will not have it.

Can't blame this one on the staff. We've only been able to work with these students since the school opened late August. The students come out of the Milwaukee Public School system. :BangHead:

Oh, and also a non-union school where ethics and morality are taught as part of the cirriculum.

Yeah, I get the problem, but it will change with good leadership. That's tough, though, no doubt.

And since most of us are non-union, we don't really understand what you are up against.

Good for that school. You are only getting a one sided view from liberal news media. If anyone is transported they have to be handcuffed for under current police policy and you can bet he was not transported for just burping. There is a lot more to this then is being told. At this point I give the school and the officer two thumbs up.

Just do a google search of the utter chaos that the teachers unions in Wisconsin are causing, including a petition to recall the governor of the state.

Being in a non-union school is good for me, but I am sensitive to the rights of people to speak, bargain, etc. Just want PEOPLE to have a voice in the process instead of being forced to unionize just because the union says so or in order to hold a job.

The whole issue is rather a nasty affair here in the state, and a non-union school is a great big target.

Boggles my mind that people complain about teachers being over paid. I wouldn't take the job for !00K. Rather drive a garbage truck for 50K.
