Question for Vets on inter-service ribbing

I work in a convenience store. Tonight, a GI in Army BDU's came in. We talked shop for a moment. The man next to us stated he had been in the military. So I asked him what branch. He replied "Air Force" I then said "Oh I thought you said you were in the military". When he got home, he called the boss and complained about me.
So, was that good nature ribbing - of another service - or, what?????

You were too familiar with the customers. Also, he was an a%^ for ratting you out.

Probably an overreaction on his part. Ive never really cared for the usual jokes though mostly because they just aren’t that original anymore.

That was good natured ribbing. I a USAF veteran would have agreed that we had it easy and then replied by saying: "Watch it pal, I'll have your house bombed"!

In the end though, we are/were all part of the combined arms team. You can be sure that those ground pounders in Vietnam (or anywhere else) loved it when a screaming Air Force jet dropped some ordnance on the enemy that was firing upon them from the hill or tree line, and without me, the guy who made sure the radios and navigation systems were working, that jet would not have been there. So cut me some slack for living in a 2 man room, eating in a nice chow hall, and going downtown for some entertainment after hours, okay?

Neither are some Marines. I (USAF) offered first aid to a Marine who was crying like a baby after he fell down a hill during a rock concert at Shuri Castle on Okinawa one evening in the 1970's.

And no one should forget that it was an unarmed Airman who fought and defeated that terrorist who had an AK on that train in Europe a few short years ago.

I was on the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) defense line at Griffiss AFB in Rome NY.

We did indeed have it easy.

I worked for civilians and if I finished my computer work early (which I usually did except every other Friday) I could go back to my room (yes, my room and I was enlisted). Working midnight to 8 got me officers breakfast.

I had a permanent Class A pass to go off base,
Three day pass for off duty time was automatic.

I was often invited to dinner and/or social events by the civilians.

The firing range was my favorite hangout so I made expert just before separation.

Well, Griffiss AFB being part of BMEWS was high on the Russian target strategy - plus we had lots of B52 bombers there, SAC,TAC,ADC, AMC...

Indeed it was - at least to that guy. Probably 999 out of 1,000 veterans would have laughed along.

I, personally, see no harm in good-natured fun like that. If a soldier, marine, seaman, airman, etc. is that thin-skinned, I would not feel very secure under his/her watch. On Veterans Day at our church there is always such good-natured ribbing among our veterans. Especially toward those who still try to fit in their uniforms.

You never served did you? This joke is common in the service. They have many for us as well, mostly along the lines that we lack the smarts to get into the Air Force...but were smart enough for machine gun fodder!

First, there’s absolutely no deception going on here. Second, not having served in the military myself, I NEVER joke with veterans about their military service. That being said, I do not think veterans joking among themselves is demeaning in any form or fashion. You do; that’s fine. It’s very subjective.

I was in the USAF. I worked side-by-side with Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers. I loved every moment of it. We ragged on each other but would never take it from someone who wasn't part of our mission.

As for the OP, it probably wasn't the right venue for such jesting. When you work with the public you need to be careful. People are easily offended.
