John 5:24 KJB uses the active word "believeth", being in Koine Greek: πιστευωνG4100 V-PAP-NSM, which is to say in transliterated Greek: pisteuwn, a "verb" [action is taking place], "present" [right now], "active" [ongoing], "participle" "nominative", "singular", "masculine".
It is not a one time "believe" and ends it. It is to be an ongoing continuous abiding relationship of faith and trust, once belief comes, it must be nurtured and grown [as as seed, planted in the garden of the heart]. Yet, it is upon our part to so "abide", "remain", "keep" [as in Genesis], etc. All of which modify the state, from simple one time passive, to an ongoing active or action necessary upon our part, working through/by this faith with God's promised word. Look for the modifying words. The Calvinistic [OSAS, [unscriptural version of] predestination, [unscriptural versaion of] elect, irresistible grace, and such like] ideology of the T.U.L.I.P. cannot stand the test of "freely", "whosoever will" and "let him" and "abide", etc:
Jesus said,
John 5:24 KJB - Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
John 8:51 KJB - Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
John 8:52 KJB - Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
John 15:4 KJB - Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
John 15:6 KJB - If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
Matthew 5:13 KJB - Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
"If", is a condition of possibility.
Even Paul, and others said:
Romans 11:22 KJB - Behold therefore the goodness
and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness,
if thou
continue in [his] goodness:
otherwise thou
also shalt be
cut off.
How are we to stand then? Active living faith and trust:
Romans 11:20 KJB - Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
2 Corinthians 1:10 KJB - Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;
1 Corinthians 9:27 KBJ - But
I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection:
lest that by any means, when I have preached to others,
I myself should be a castaway.
Shall we not hear the Word plead with us?:
Hebrews 6:4 KJB - For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
Hebrews 6:5 KJB - And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
Hebrews 6:6 KJB - If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
Hebrews 6:8 KJB - But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.
John:
1 John 3:4 KJB - We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
Revelation 2:11 KJB - He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
etc.
