Reparations for blacks

post-it

My Grandfather was injured while doing a project for the Government in the 40's... building a damn. He was never compensated for that life long injury. Can I get reparations for that too? It was unfair for him to have struggled through life because of their injustise.

I need to check back into my whole family history, but I bet the Government did a few other Capitalistic type mistakes that they need to be taught a lesson on. Who do they think they are? We the People? No, it a banker sitting behind a desk somewhere with my families money in his vault.

Once abortion is delared illegal, does that mean all the women victims can come back and sue the Government for allowing such genocide to occur over the years?

I didn't think about it before I wrote the above argument, but you know, this one argument might prevent abortion from ever being overturned.

No, Post-it, but there is a good possibility that
the innocents will point their fingers at the
unforgiven before our God and cry out to Him,
"Guilty!!!"

With regards to reparations, the issue is patently ridiculous, though I dislike some of the company I keep in my side of this issue.

To put it simply, reparations creates a slippery slope to which there is no clear distinction to be made. As has been mentioned, Blacks and Native Americans were severely mistreated in this nation. But so too were Mexicans, Chinese, Japanese, Irish, Eastern Europeans, Italians, Arabs, etc. etc. Does racism exist today? A mere glance of this thread shows that it does. Am I responsible for such racism? No. I don't nor have I ever owned slaves or oppressed a minority. My parents never owned slaves. My grandparents never owned slaves. My great-grandparents never owned slaves. My great-great-grandparents never owned slaves. To the best of my knowledge (and as far back as we can trace), no one in my family owned slaves. I have no doubt that there are unsavory people in my family history. In fact, I know there are. Every family (regardless of race) has such individuals. The sins of the father should not be held against the son. I can't control what my ancestors may or may not have done. No one can.

If nothing else, reparations are a red herring to address real concerns. Slavery is no longer a pressing social matter in America. There are issues within the minority community that need to be addressed no doubt. Issues of crime, poor education, and poverty (3 interconnected issues) plague our inner cities. Instead of focusing on what our great-grandparents may or may not have done, we should work on improving the future.
Believe me, if I had seen any of Justified's racist remarks on other ethnic groups, I would have called him/her out the same way!

If they want it so bad, then go to the one who pronounced slavery for them in the first place!

Justified, you are a 100% full blooded BIGOT. The way you expressed yourself here is disgusting. Archie Bunker looks like an angel next to those unchristian remarks.

By the way, God didn't create slavery, he just doesn't butt into mankinds stupidity, he is allowing you to express yourself here like an Jack mule isn't he?

You edited your views in the posts, not in your heart. That will most likely take a long time if ever from your normal attitude on the board. You're not fooling anybody here. I will pray for you

[/QUOTE]Well you said it all! Great post.

One thing that hasn'tbeen mentioned is what kinds of reparations we're talking about... money? Forty acres and a mule? That was offered and later recinded.

My suggestion is to have the Federal Government subsidize the college educations of persons who can show they are at least 1/8 decended from a person who was a slave as of the date of the emancipation proclamation. The amount would be a grant in the amount equivalent to the cost of attending the State University system for 4 years. This program would be effect until 2030. Anyone in school after the 2030 school year will need to provide their own funds for school years 2031 onward. If a person does not wish to attend a major university, then that would be their choice. Also, the applicant must be a native born citizen, and their parents must be native born citizens. This is a win-win. It would provide an avenue of reparations for decendents of those who were deprived as a result of slavery, and the federal govermnent would see a return on its inventment in the form of income tax revenue, resulting from increased income earned as a result of a college education.

That would restrict reparations to only a certain group. What about the elderly? What about those who don't want to go to college?

Why not just give them all $1,000,000 tax free and be done with it?

Better to make it a one time payment than institute some type of social security scheme.

To pay for this the government can just confiscate the 401K savings from all descendants of slave owners or those that took part in the slave trade. If you can prove you had an abolitionist in your lineage you are automatically exempt. If you one of your ancestors owned more than 100 slaves AND/OR was a Confederate officer you will have
to give up you house, cars and any land you own (but you can keep what you have in your checking account). If you've ever had a rebel flag on your car then you must forfeit said car (or pick-up truck..along with gunrack).

Sound fair?

In those cases, the reparations would fall to their hiers.

I ddn't say it was perfect or even feasable. I just tossed it out there to see if the situation was resolvable.

I know now why I did not choose politics as an occupation.

Me too ;) (I mean..I didn't chose it either and am glad I didn't!)

Oh well..I have a feeling if this issue starts gaining traction in Politics it will create more polarization and hurt many of the gains that have been made in racial equality and understanding over the past 30 years or so.
