Best news Ever!

George Floyd is not just another statistic. Something's gotta give.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP/WHSV) — Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is expected to announce plans Thursday for the removal of an iconic statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from Richmond's prominent Monument Avenue, a senior administration official told The Associated Press.

The governor will direct the statue to be moved off its massive pedestal and put into storage while his administration seeks input on a new location, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak before the governor’s announcement.

Best news ever? Really? Maybe a little hyperbole, you think?

Didn’t Gov Northam just have to answer (or maybe not) for photos of him in black face/KKK robe? All is ignored if he has the right politics?

peace to you

I think North Augusta had the best way of dealing with this.

In the Hamburg Massacre a group of Democrats in what is now North Augusta attacked a group of black people trying to keep them from voting. During the event several black men and 1 white man were killed.

There was a monument for the white man calling him a hero for exemplifying “the highest ideal of Anglo-Saxon civilization”.

This was an issue of debate last year.

The conclusion is that the monument needs to stay unaltered, educational features should be added around the monument that offer a counterpoint to the obelisk and includes a summary of the Hamburg Massacre and the names of the black men who died as a result, and monuments will be added honoring the black men who died on that day.

We need to stop trying to erase history and past ideologies and instead learn from them. There is a reason Germany keeps Dachau open as a memorial to those who died. There is a reason the Berlin Wall is marked by a rail. History is important to a culture, even history that is bad or that reflects poorly on our nation.

I am not a fan of this idea. Reminds me too much of Jahr Null in "The Man in the High Castle".

Should it be noted that Robert Lee never owned any slaves?

I think the issue is more that he led an army against the United States government. Can't erase history and act like it never happened. Much better to discuss history and why things happened like they did.

And yet, Marion Barry, the drug abusing, prostitute using, perjurious, glorified mayor of D.C. having a statue in his honor is completely acceptable. Lee was a Christian man of integrety and honor who fought for what he believed was right, the rights of states. Is it then right to attempt to erase history and replace it with a falsehood, or rather with the glorification of filth?

He just did the same thing as George Washington did
But most people want to say that the War for Southern Independece was only because of slavery. Yes, that was a part of it - but other issues as well.

Same thing with the USA Declaration of Independence. We were basically taught the War was fought over "Taxation without Representation is Trynary" Yes that was # 14 on the list out of more than 20 items.

* my minor change
Note: Lee was married to the daughter of Washingtons adopted son

Well. those same folks wanted to tear down any thing for Jefferson and Washington due to owning slaves, heck, even Jesus would be b lasted by them for not being LGBT accepting enough, and not into abortions rights!

Pulling down that statue is long overdue

When we choose to remember leaders, we remember something good about them. Call it their principal legacy;the one thing they did memorable over and above or inspite of their flaws. Trump fans choose to see his conservative efforts (anti-abortion,LGBTQ...) and not sleeping with prostitutes and buying them off. Same thing.

Thomas Jefferson owned slaves and he put up political and intellectual defenses for American slavery. That is a blight in his legacy, but he is remembered for writing the Declaration of Independence and also his diplomatic service during war. The latter is why he is in the pantheon.

Fredrick Douglass said nasty things about native Americans but he is remembered for being an abolitionist and a civil rights leader.

What about Lee?
The entirety of his memory is leading an insurrection against United States whose purpose was to perpetuate slavery. There are no good parts to the Confederacy so celebrating its leaders is celebrating their bad. That's why white supremacists are fond of Lee's memories yet he never owned human chattels.

So what is the difference between Robert E. Lee and George Washington? They both took up arms against their govt.
