President Obama has ordered a full review into hacking aimed at influencing US elections going back to 2008, the White House said Friday.

The President has directed the Intelligence Community to conduct a full review of what happened during the 2016 election process. It is to capture lessons learned from that and to report to a range of stakeholders," White House Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Adviser Lisa Monaco said at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast with reporters Friday. "This is consistent with the work that we did over the summer to engage Congress on the threats that we were seeing."

Seems that enough of this garbage stuck to the wall for Obama to run with it.

Problem:Some are accusing him (Obama) of being behind it and could have been "a false flag" operation possibly committed by the Obama administration itself.

John Bolton:
We would want to know who else might want to influence the election and why they would leave fingerprints that point to the Russians," Bolton said. "That's why I say until we know more about how the intelligence community came to this conclusion, we don't [know] whether it's Russian inspired or a false flag."

So, yes, good idea Mr. President. Hope the GOP requires that element (administration involvement) of the "review" as well.

Hmm, Obama wants this "review" done by January 20, 2017 (An impossible date for such a "review").

Wonder why he wants it done by January 20, 2017?

Do you really think that Obama would so something that helped Trump be elected?

I don't see why it's an impossible date to meet. The Tower Commission Report looking into Iran-Contra only took 2 1/2 months.

That's not the point, he desperately needs an excuse to invalidate the election.

The so-called "Russian interference" is one garbage item that (as I said) is sticking to the wall.

So yes.

Because I am a software architect/engineer and I know how complex and convoluted these things can be.

IMO about a year would be required, even then that may not be enough time.

I would think that as a conservative and an avowed conservative you would want an investigation and that the truth be found. You were quick to condemn Obama on anything and everything. Why such a pause now?

Seems that folk on both sides of the aisle have heard enough evidence that they are saying this cannot be a partisan issue. I agree. This is too serious to just sweep under the rug or to point fingers without the truth being known.

I am not saying that Russian interference and/or hacking has no merit at all just that Obama is taking issue with this one because it seems the most likely to be accepted by the general public.

His motive is what I question.

No pause at all Let the "review" begin. I agree with - Let's see whose fingerprints are on this activity and the motives thereof.

Hank, seems to me if he had the motive you allude to he would have made noise before the election. It isn't that this story just broke for the first time after the election. Russian hacking was discussed before the election.

I feel Obama and Congress should have been making noise about this as far back as last summer.

If they had you would have had more credibility of accusing him of playing politics IMHO.

If we do nothing it will only encourage Russia, China and who know what other groups to attempt to hack us ... which I expect they are doing anyway.

We really need to put time, effort and money into making cyberspace safe for our government agencies, candidates, and those in office.

I would hope that Democrats and Republicans would want to know what the Russians did.

So, CTB you disagree with my assessment as a professional IT consultant of 40 plus years concerning how long this project of Russian interference/hacking detection would take.

First of all a Scope of Work would have to be established and that would entail an inventory of ALL voting machines from every precinct in every county in every state along with machine type (there are dozens) along with the driving software (also many many brands and kinds) and internet connectivity (if any) software with an encryption software description to determine the likelihood of data capturing at the highest level.

This would require 50 (or maybe 57) sub-projects to be managed by the individual state stakeholder and coordinated with all others.

A division would have to be made between internet connected and non-internet connected systems.

Think about just that part CTB - hundreds of thousands of machines and this is only the 1st element of the Scope of Work documentation. Then there would be the functional and system design documents detailing work elements of the project which normally far exceed the time to develop the Scope of Work.

e.g.
Each machine would REQUIRE interference/hacking software regression testing to determine its security defenses.

each piece of software source code would have to be examined by an expert in the Information Technology field (with expertise in the driving software language - C++, C#, Java, Visual Basic, etc) to attest to its logical soundness with decision tree flow charts as well to provide evidence of that integrity.

I could go on but I should require $100.00 for my expertise (with which the Lord has provided me).

OK lets do it!

I will come out of retirement and volunteer my consulting services (at a modest fee of course) to help with this project.

How so?

It's stupid because it obviously didn't happen?
or
It's stupid because they had nothing to gain?
or
Some other reason?
It's stupid because it's stupid. It didn't happen. Tell us how the Russians could possibly hack an election.

What sources?

Seriously?

John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Charles Schumer, Jack Reed, Barack Obama for starters.

“For years, foreign adversaries have directed cyberattacks at America’s physical, economic, and military infrastructure, while stealing our intellectual property. Now our democratic institutions have been targeted. Recent reports of Russian interference in our election should alarm every American.

“Congress’s national security committees have worked diligently to address the complex challenge of cybersecurity, but recent events show that more must be done. While protecting classified material, we have an obligation to inform the public about recent cyberattacks that have cut to the heart of our free society. Democrats and Republicans must work together, and across the jurisdictional lines of the Congress, to examine these recent incidents thoroughly and devise comprehensive solutions to deter and defend against further cyberattacks.
