Schumer Caves

The Senate just had a procedural vote and Schumer's troops caved. From all reports the GOP offered nothing that they haven't already offered. Waiting on more details.

I don't understand your argument. The Dems did not get a DACA agreement/Trump did not get funding for the wall. That's basically even. The Dems got a 6 year renewal of the CHIPS med ins for children. hat did the GOP get in exchange? WIN Dems.

Except that it does look like Trump held firm and Schumer did not.

Exactly. Nothing more than they had already been offered. It was all a game, one the democrats realized they were going to lose.

The DNC needs a little more time to develop a spin on the cave-in.

It will be forthcoming for the evening news and talking heads circuses.

You are funny.

Trump was not looking for wall funding in this C.R. The C.R. contained a number of items that the Schumerites are happy with. Schumer took his party to a shutdown over a non-existent issue. It was a total charade. Once the videos came out of him condemning the Republicans back in 2013, he was made to look like a hypocrite. Schumer knew the optics looked bad for him and his party, so that is why the shutdown ends today.

I think the public perception was that the Democrats cared more about illegal aliens than US citizens - the "schumer shutdown".
It was the Trump/Schumer shutdown.

It's ridiculous that Republicans and Democrats cannot agree to do the obviously decent thing, provide a path to citizenship for Dreamers. Playing politics with it is contemptible, and the current hard-right "Republican" opposition to it is deplorable.

And I know some are going to jump on that statement because it would represent "amnesty" (aka grace) to people who are in a difficult situation. As a disciple of Jesus, I don't have the luxury of placing "America First" over the calling of the Kingdom of God. I can give Caesar his due, but I must be an advocate for the Kingdom of God to change Caesar's mind in terms of what is moral and right, since I also have influence as a member of Caesar (citizen in a democratic republic).

When were the Democrats offered extending CHIPS without a wall agreement?
In this last C.R. It was good-faith offer by the GOP to avoid a shutdown. It did not help as the Schumerites voted for a shutdown anyway in hopes of strong-arming the GOP into concessions. Now comes the next step. Can the GOP call Schumer's bluff in February and then in March when the DACA deal ends? I really do not have a dog in this hunt because I am an independent, but I am having fun watching the Dems realize they cannot bully Trump.

While I don’t doubt your sincerity, I just don't believe compassion is the main reason why the Democratic Party is pushing so hard for amnesty.

Therefore, the Republicans caved in to avoid a disaster in the mid-year elections.

Of course, it is not! I doubt the sincerity of Schumer, Pelosi, Durbin et al. To them it is all about future Democrat voters. The more people that are dependent on government the more Democrat voters there are. The Democrats could not give a rats rear-end about the Dreamers. How do I know this? They are the party of infanticide (60,000,000 strong!). They do not care about the unborn, so they surely do not care about a bunch of illegal immigrants.

How could the Republicans cave? There aren't 60 Republicans in the Senate. The Democrats, who were filibustering, stopped filibustering and allowed a vote. Which we knew all along would pass.

Yeah, this was the same deal the Democrats rejected last week, so I guess in a sense they "caved" because Chuck was saying no way without a DACA deal, then he retracted it.

It was killing the Democrats in the polling, there was no emergency to settle DACA, but they only have til March to do so. I think Trump won the battle but has yet to win the war.

The Dems said they only vote for- because it was agreed that there will be no more CR's without DACA being approved. Lets see what happens on 8 Feb.

Actually, the beat goes on. This hasn't been resolved. The can was just kicked down the road to Feb. 8. Then we'll run into this all over again but CHIPS is now off the table. Do the Democrats have a stronger or weaker position for the next battle than they had for this one? I say yes.
