Scofield Bible. Yay or Nay

Let me just pull out this can of worms.

So Hi! Im new to the forums, and I figured this would be a great place to ask my question.


What are your thoughts on the Scofield KJV reference Bible and notes.

Personally, So far I really like it.

1) my Bible is high quality so i kinda dont want to part with it, if its bad (lol)
2) the only cristisms i have found are 3fold
2i) Scofield was a sinner (who isnt/wasnt?)
2ii) Scofield promoted Gap theory (This one bugged me, cause Im a huge creationist, however in his notes on genesis, he barely even touches the issue, he gives 3 definitions of what day could be, in the entirety of scripture and doesn't even say what that particular reference is, so I cant really get bothered by it. Maybe if I tried hard enough I could.)
2iii) Dispensationalism : Again, don't have a problem with this.

Is there something I am missing here? Should I be worried about anything with his notes or are a lot of people just really good at critiquing people.

I wouldn't buy one and if one was given to me I'd ask for a gift receipt. The dispensationalism in the notes would drive me insane. Why have a study Bible where you can't trust the notes?

I dont have any big beef with dispensation, maybe my notes were altered cause i dont see anything on gap theory. Ill just the Bible and spit out any bones I may find.

For you, would rtry to get a copy of the 1967 edition, any of those available?

My copy of the English Standard Version (ESV) is a Scofield Study System.
Many of the notes appear to me to be fully consistent with the study notes of others, and so I do not see any reason to not use them. Since I am a progressive dispensationalist, my views differ with the traditional dispensationalism presented in the study notes.

Bottom line, whether you agree or disagree with his notes, it gives you a basis for understanding one way of looking at scripture, thus may allow you to grow, whether in thinking through the same view or an alternate view. We are to know what we believe.

I have one for Sunday worship, (I think a Scof. III) I very much like the font size, very easy to read. And the cross references are excellent. The notes are OK, I keep a list in the back of the ones I disagree with, but overall it is a good bible, well made, good size.

Edit, forgot to say it is a KJV, which is what our Pastor uses.

I use and also like Scofields very much. Mainly, because there are excellent cross-references, and the cross-reference system is VERY easy to use. Vs. say, a Thompsom chain where you would have to go to the back to look up everything etc. <----I DO like Thompson's as well. Just not as user-friendly.

That being said.....Yes, Scofield does believe in a Gap Theory, and as you look, you will find it in his notes. Pre-Adamic civilization ET. AL!!! So, yes it contains errors in the notes.

However, no Study Bible is perfect and it is still one I like to use.

Bought my wife the "King James Study Bible" and she likes that a LOT as well.

As long as you don't make any of these two fundamental errors you will be good:

1.) Accepting everything asserted in admittedly imperfect notes as perfect exegesis without self-study.
2.) Obsessing over disparraging Scofield personally and wiping his Reference Bible off of the face of the Earth as though it contained more errors than a Quran.

I've never seen an example of the first on B.B........I have seen a few examples of the second.

Hi Amy G, Its an Oxford University Press, copyright 2006. I went to their website, searched it, and could not find it either. However, Scofield ESV are available, just google "Scofield Study Bible English Standard Version.

Also they come in HCSB!

Where would you differ with 'traditional" Dispy?

I rather appreciate the notes a lot of times........but, some of them are indeed garbage. Like you, I like the cross-references a lot. I find the cross-reference system the best I have ever seen, and VERY relevant to topic usually. I suggest Scofield Bibles for that very reason. Best cross-refs I know of. (Course, I've only used a few study Bibles too....but I like Scofield's).

Dont get me wrong, I do really enjoy it, and I haven't stumbled across any gap stuff really (Even the genesis 1 stuff was pretty vague... maybe my notes are different). However if I get into anything im confused on, I would probably just take it to my Pastor, or do some searchin'. My heart does leap a little when I listen to someone like David Gibbs, and he goes "turn to page 599" and i can do that! ahahaha.
