Scripture Memorization at your Bible College

Did you have to memorize scripture at your Bible college? WVBS assigned the following for quiz 1:

Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Gen 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Gen 3:14-15 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Gen 6:22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.​

If were assigned memory work, were you able to choose the translation? WVBS offers 4 choices to choose from: KJV, NKJV (1982), NASB (1995), ESV.

Did you have a system for memorization?

Did you try and retain all that was assigned, or did you just move onto the next thing? Did you have a review system?

Did you study more scripture than was required, and have goals of your own?

Students had to memorize Jn 3:16 in Greek for a first year Greek class. This aside from memorizing vocabulary, conjugations, and declensions.

My brother told me that at Bob Jones they had an extensive Bible Memorization - and you did not just say
it; you had to write the verse in class - and it had to be 100% correct - including all punctuation!

When I was in the AWANA program - you were allowed two mistakes per verse,
however, my pastor, Rev Merlin Schultz, insisted it be word perfect!.
Now, I appreciate his high standards.

How to Read Psalm 119 - BJUtoday

[Psalm 119:] It’s the longest Psalm in the Psalter. It’s the longest “chapter” in the Bible. And at first, wading through all 176 verses can seem like a very daunting task!

Perhaps the most unusual story of the benefit to memorizing this psalm is the story of George Wishart, Bishop of Edinburgh in the 18th century. He found himself in a difficult spot as he was being condemned to death. He was confident of a pardon that had not yet arrived, even at the moment he stood on the scaffold to meet his fate. Taking advantage of the time-honored tradition of allowing the condemned man to pray a psalm, Wishart chose to recite in prayer the text of the 119th psalm. Before he was finished praying, the delayed pardon arrived and his life was spared. One can only imagine his ill fortune had he not memorized this psalm!

How can someone get any kind of Biblical certification and not have at least 50+ verses memorized?

Yes. I have a BA in religion and a MATS.

AND I headed out to Belk this morning.....pulled into a shopping center and thought "well, Walmart is the next shopping center so I'll just cut through". It was not until I was parking that I realized I was not going to Walmart. :( But I have a graduate degree in theology even with my disfunctional memory :)

The "scholarly" resources behind the paywalls are superior to the stuff outside the paywalls? Memorized scripture is "outdated" by the time the certificate would be awarded, and time spent reading and memorizing the Bible is "devotional"?

If your school did not require scripture memorization, did you require it of yourself in any systematic way?

The Navigator stuff looks adequate and appropriate as a supplement to what is on the WVBS quizzes. Maybe they beef it up later, after students have their feet wet in the program.

Prior to seminary I did, but I do not know if it is fair to say in a systematic way.

IMHO it is more important to learn what the Bible teaches than to memorize verses. But I did grow up in a church where we memorized passages.

That is what I liked about the Awana program - the verses to be learned was based on doctrine in a systematic way.

Somehow I missed the big picture of Awana. I was only aware of it as some scripture memory requirements that earned prizes and praise for the children who obeyed. And I am not sure when the program was officially Awana or not, at the places that I attended.

Thanks! I need to look closer at this. My only real adult contact with the program was an online friend's church that was very very upset about the NIV changes that were disrupting their program.
