It doesn't matter the best we can tell from the article the numbers are fabricated as there is no supporting documents.Only vague claims of such.

Where is your proof the numbers are fabricated?

How many rapes and assaults are acceptable to you?

No the "number 30" does not appear.

But you should be able to find this... "When you look at the entire universe of female veterans, close to a third say they were victims of rape or assault while they were serving.."

If 90% of assaults are not reported then for every one that is reported nine are not.

30% X 9 = 270%

Under those assumptions then for every 30 that are reported 270 are not.

So the total is 30 reported plus 270 not reported = 300

But you can not have 300% of 100% being assaulted.

So the range is 100% are assaulted more than once (3times)

Or some smaller number are assaulted many times (10, 20 , 40, 100 times?)

And that is why I do not believe the numbers.

Your total lack of understanding of percentages is amazing.

I want to see these reports. "Time" is making claims on vague references to reports. The same tactic the global warming fakes have done.

Your total lack of understanding of percentages is amazing.

Please explain it to me.

A third of the population report an assault.

90% of assaults are not reported.

What is the range of assaults that can be calculated from those two figures?

What I would like is some honesty. How about something specific on the pentagon reports themselves. Why is this report that gets regurgitated every year by the liberal media not available publically if the media can get it.

This is hilarious... did you even look at any of your links?

ROFL as you like to say.

The very first one takes you to an article titled:

"Bogus GI rape photos used
as Arab propaganda
Pictures purporting to be U.S. troops actually taken from porn sites"

Hardly supports your position does it?

Are you just lazy or is your reading comprehension really that bad?

And he cannot produce the Pentagon report which is what is needed. I am sure there is a report about this issue. But just how the liberal wrag he uses to start this thread has spun it or when the report actually came out is not clear at this point.

Dumb question I know, but here goes!

If 90% of rapes etc are unreported, how do we know???

They ARE unreported you know!!

Similar to a report I read about a hunnert years ago from the eco-freaks that if we didn't get our - "whatever" - in line, most of the animals we now know will be extinct. The basis was that we now have some 90 species going extinct every year that we don't even know about. WE DON'T KNOW ABOUT THEM, BUT WE KNOW THEY ARE GOING EXTINCT????? DUH!!!!!!!!!

As to the OP, does anyone remember the conservative hue & cry that mixing the $exe$ on the battlefield was NOT a good idea??? Slippery slope & all that!!

It becomes obvious more every day that liberals in general have no concept of common sense!

Global Warming, (er cooling, er, ah, CLIMATE CHANGE, yeah- that's it) anyone??

My figures are from the linked article.

It says 30% of women veterans report being assaulted.

And it says that they estimate that 80 to 90% of assaults are unreported.

It's a matter of simple math.

30% X the unreported 80 or 90% either means that 100% are assaulted at least once or some smaller percentage are assaulted many times.

Seems unlikely doesn't it?

Like I said, I doubt the figures in the article.

Targus,
all the links are from the same article, by the same author, and I think I quoted every 'figure' she used to support her position. She has no link to supporting sources. Even her figures are vague. The problem I have is in trying to do what you did.... assume the accurracy and that the figures are all cross checked within the source and duplicity removed in accounting..... still with the assumption they are correct in reporting and tabulation. If the Pentagon really believes that 80-90% of sexual assault is unreported.... just how is the Pentagon coming up with this figure and how does it account for its own complacence If 10-20% are reported and of that number, whatever it is that they know occurrs..... only 8% have a successful investigation and prosecution and of that number 80% convicted are given an 'honorable' discharge?

If anything it is like the Pentagon is indicting itself and its own inefficiency after self incrimination that it knows its got a problem, and it lacks the discipline to address it. If anything......It itself is the biggest part of the problem with its leadership..... and its figures. There is no way for us to determine how many of 'reports' are presented that are either confirmed, retracted, cannot be confirmed nor denied with certainty, or bogus. What it does indicated is by mixing the genders in the military and specifically in combat, there is cause to believe there is a breakdown in morale: The mixing of genders presents a division. The division presents the possibility of majority/minority influences which encourage victimization and also a 'victim' mentality. This presents a problem no matter which group you're in, it becomes a morale problem and a problem of cohesion. This is compounded when the leadership allows a problem to develop with enough proportions that it can contribute to 'witch hunt' mentality to correct its 'publicized' image, when it should have had some foresight in setting up and establishing provisions in its organization which made the opportunity for sexual assault very rare.

But, just think: If having male and female together in the military is a problem because of the sexes, just how much more will deviants in the military compound the problem; when those of the same gender are expected to have a sexless intimate confidence and interdependance in their fellow soldiers in combat, but are expected to co-exist in living quarters where they may have added worry about the sexual motivations of others and a disconnect of trust?

Another problem that I have with this whole accusation of a rampant epidemic of assaults on women in the military by our troops is the unstated implication that there are no men of character that would stand up to defend the women within their units and that there are no men of character in the chain of command that would call out the perpetraters and bring them to justice.

The accusations are bogus, trumped up, and intentionally malicious in my opinion.

You just described 90% of C.T.Boy's threads.

After posting a link to the article titled "Bogus GI rape photos used as Arab propaganda - Pictures purporting to be U.S. troops actually taken from porn sites" he probably feels sufficiently foolish and will drop out of this thread to go off and start another equally bogus one.

It has been clearly shown by the replies in this thread that numbers can be manuplated to say whatever the presenter wants them to say.

From a first hand practical prespective. I have two daughters currently serving in the military. When there is even a threat of sexual harrassment or misconduct it is taken seriously by the unit command.

Case in point - during a weekend drill training for the National Guard my daughter and several other females were subject to inappropiate gestures and comments by a male soldier. It was reported to command and in very short order the male soldier found himself put out of the military.

A second example - my daughter who is currently serving in Afghanstan was in a guard tower at night on routine security. There was also a male soldier in the tower. When he attempted unwanted advances he was told in no uncertain terms that he would remain on his side of the tower and she would remain on her side of the tower. He was smart to comply since my daughter had an M-16 to fend him off. After the situation was made known the next morning, the command changed procedures so that no longer would a male and female be on guard at the same time. It would be 2 males or 2 females.

I am proud of my daughters and their decision to serve in the United States military and support them 100%. I also pity anyone who would do anything to one of them because if there was anything left after my daughter got finished with them, they would have an angry Dad to face next!

I do not believe anyone is saying there are not men/women of character in the military services. Obviously there are many good men and women in the military with high morals and who conduct themselves both morally and ethically and they should be praised.

It does not take many men of low character to present a real problem and IMHO the problem is not a political one. Rape and sexual assault is not a Republican or Democrat issue. It is moral and legal issue which should be addressed forcefully.

The Washington Times, a very conservative newspaper reports and does not question the 30% as reported by the Pentagon:

The problem becomes even more complex in the context of women serving in the military. In their combat roles, service women in Iraq are subject to both violence from the war and assault from fellow service members or superiors. According to a 2003 study, about one-third of female veterans visiting the Veterans Administration for health care reported having been subject to rape or attempted rape during their military service.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2007/aug/09/pervasive-wound-of-war/

Also from the Washington Times .............

Consider this as well: The Denver Post recently pried from the Defense Department tons of evidence that proves accusations of rape and sexual assaults from women in our armed forces are not being prosecuted by the military. There are men and women in our midst who do not want to criticize the military for its hush-hush handling of those facts because we are at war -- as if that is a good "explanation" for the cover up.

Prior experience with the originator of the thread.

Very poor dodge.

What is your response to the Washington Times? It is a very conservative newspaper.

This really is not a liberal nor conservative topic. It is a topic everyone should be interesting in dealing with eliminating if possible.

Do you agree? Or is such conduct acceptable to you?
