I just don't understand US sometimes. I would think the Church would want gay scouts to be surrounded by strong Christian influences.

Why do kids invite their unsaved friends to middle school or high school services?

Are we pulling out and stopping everything that accepts people who sin?

This is just another ISSUE bandwagon for Church folks to jump on. If you want to preach God's word about committing homosexual acts and why it's wrong, then do so as it is in God's word. But why do we insist on becoming known for these issues we are so boisterously against as opposed to folks who just preach what God's word says?

The world gives us something to get us off message and we take it hook, line and sinker every time.

The step to allow gay scouts is only the first step in letting gay men lead boy scout groups.

But there is actually a legal issue here. It is about what groups we allow to use our church facilities. The legal staff in the Florida Baptist Convention suggest that a church tighten up their guidelines as to whom can use their property. They are suggesting that churches make certain that who they allow to use their facilities is in line with their statement of faith. The reason for this is that when a gay couple come wanting to use the buildings for their marriage, we can say that we only allow the buildings to be used by groups in general agreement with our statement of faith. And if they challenge us, we can site our firmly held religious belief and that we have been consistent with it.

Homosexuality = sin
Fully agree - but being drunk is also a sin, but we would welcome such a person to come to our church - wouldn't we?

(note: change made to conform to L.E.F.T.)

Zaac, This is my basic thinking. As I stated in another post - I do have two questions.
1. Will troops be required to have homosexual leaders?
2. Will churches be prohibited from teaching morality (which would include that homosexuality is sinful)

If both of these answers are negative - then I do not have a major problem. In fact, we should show our support to those churches who intend to teach the truth.

BRING THEM IN...FROM A FIELD OF SIN

There is a distinct difference between letting a drunk visit your church and letting organizations that condone drunkenness use your facility or be endorsed by the church.

I have yet to see anyone on this board who would find this equation false. The "hoopla" that we banter about, is do with how we respond and react to our culture in which this is so much in our national conversation. We do not "ban" homosexuals at our church, however, we are clear that if they are practicing such, they will NOT be allowed any position of leadership. I personally welcome those, for whom this is a struggle to attend and hope with anticipation that they will be strengthened in order to walk obediently with God.

You are absolutely right- even to the point of prohibiting a wedding reception to serving alcohol.

Likewise - as long as a scout troop can teach morality in its entirely - then so be it.

Good questions Salty. i would think that if you're sponsoring the Scouts at your church, you should be able to control who can /cannot be a leader.

We do backgound checks and interviews for anyone who is going to be allowed to work with the kids already on our property. So why not just make it clear just as we do with so many other things where the kids are involved, that certain things will disqualify you from serving as a leader?

The Church is independent and the Boy Scouts cannot dictate who can/cannot be a leader over a troop the church is sponsoring in its facilities.

That's why I think it is a great idea to let kids in who may be struggling with this issue. it could be a great place to love them into correct BIBLICALLY-Based thinking.

I just wouldn't have a probleem with the Scouts being at the church as long as they are operating under guidelines that honor the church's beliefs.

And if they say that to sponsor a troop you've got to allow gay leaders, then it's time for the church to just start it's own scout-like organization.

How do the Boy Scouts "honor the belief's" of the local church?

Do they all become members?

Do they all sign they agree with the statement of faith and constitution?

Do they all have to be saved?

It is a matter of being yoked with unbelievers, and that is a problem in my view.

When professing Christians say it's just another sin they help pave the way to cultural acceptance. I applaud the SBC to draw the line in the sand!

The American infatuation with BSA/GSA to some equates such as being 'Christian'.

Earning merit badges, reiterating niceties, learning respectful mannerisms, learning 'common' courtesies, learning a pretense of patriotism, and now practicing 'tolerance' do not equal being a regenerated Christian. In fact none of these practices have ever equaled being born again.

This is nothing different than 'hotbed' Christianity wherein one learns all the nuances of being a believer while being trained in a 'Christian home', yet said person may not be regenerate while being capable of mimicking other believers.

Unfortunately it seems many Christians make the above practices equal to evidences of being born again.

BSA/GSA are overrated. So is 'Americanism' and 'Patriotism'. None make any person a believer nor do they prove them to be such.
