“If you look at the denominations where women do the preaching, they are also the denominations where people do the leaving.”

Southern Baptist seminary president Albert Mohler, who once long ago advocated women’s ordination, now says females should not preach from the pulpit on Sunday morning.

“If you look at the denominations where women do the preaching, they are also the denominations where people do the leaving,” the 59-year-old president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, said May 10. “I think there’s just something about the order of creation that means that God intends for the preaching voice to be a male voice.”

Mohler says women should not occupy the Lord’s Day pulpit

I agree with Mohler that the pastor and preacher should be male.

I am not so sure that churches with women preachers make up more of declining congregation . I am (more importantly) also not sure it matters as we are to be faithful period (even if we loose the most members).

Mohler is getting crotchety. This is a prime example of post hoc, ergo propter hoc, i.e., one thing comes first, so it causes what comes after.

“I think there’s just something about the order of creation that means that God intends for the preaching voice to be a male voice,” seems like a bit of eisegesis on his part. He could attempt to make his case some other way, but that's pretty weak.

I am surprised he ever supported it.

I think he'll regret having said that. While that may be true, it is true for a lot of churches and congregations that have male pastors as well. We seem to be in a general decline in the West. Of course, there may be a lot of context left out, also.

This hubbub geared up when academic Owen Strachan (also President of something called 'Refomanda Ministries') caught wind of a lighthearted tweet from Lifeway Bible teacher Beth Moore:

Beth Moore on 27 April 2019

"What are 5 things you’d do if you could still do what you do but had the margin to pursue other stuff just for fun? My 5:
1. Get my pilot’s license.
2. Turn my novel into a Netflix series.
3. Have a talk show.
4. Work a harvest at a Tuscan vineyard.
5. Hike hike hike hike hike.
.....
PS. My original #5 was Teaching a men’s Sunday School class at a church full of Calvinists just to get everybody going."

Owen took to his Patheos blog to vent:

“For a woman to teach and preach to adult men is to defy God’s Word and God’s design. Elders must not allow such a sinful practice"

And now these COBMAW guys are up in arms about women preaching.

Owen Strachan: “For a woman to teach and preach to adult men is to defy God’s Word and God’s design. Elders must not allow such a sinful practice"

Al Mohler: "I think there’s just something about the order of creation that means that God intends for the preaching voice to be a male voice"

A blast from the past for Strachan, Mohler, & Co.:

Charles Spurgeon, sermon: "All at It" (1888)
text: Acts 8:4 “Therefore they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word."

"so were there no exclusions on account of sex. Men and women were to spread abroad the knowledge of Jesus. We read that, “As for Saul, he made havoc of the Church, entering into every house and haling men and women committing them to prison. Therefore they that were scattered abroad” (and these must have been men and women) “went everywhere preaching the Word.”There are many ways in which women can fittingly proclaim the Word of the Lord and in some of these they can proclaim it more efficiently than men. There are minds that will be attracted by the tender, plaintive, winning manner in which the sister in Christ expresses herself."

I think Mohler is right that mainline protestant denominations are in a big decline. That is the context of his statements.

There is no contradiction to be found here

I don't care for Beth Moore. Her teaching is about as deep as that of Joel Osteen.

Then she should fit right in with most Southern Baptist preachers.

Where in the SBC are the Robert G Lee's of today?

I long ago learned to favor the real Bible teachers like Vernon McGee over most SBC big names. Even today I would rather watch David Jeremiah on TV than most SBC or independent Baptist preachers (and that speaking only of males).

You do realize that David Jeremiah is Southern Baptist??

I am not so sure that churches with women preachers make up more of declining congregation .

I can state for a fact there are some churches in Greater Orlando that have woman preachers and are growing...in numbers. This is especially true of the husband-wife pastor tandem. The question is whether these churches are producing growing disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Indeed:

Southern Baptist church membership shrinks again: the denomination's 'Annual Church Profile' statistics show yet another sizable exodus:

Southern Baptist Church Attendance Hits 30-Year Low

"Southern Baptists are hemorrhaging church members"

Adam Greenway, president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, twittered: "Heartbreaking to see these ACP declines. We must do better as Southern Baptists. God help us."

Or are they cleaning up their membership list which may have members who left the church (or passed away) over the past 30-40 years - let alone 1-29 years!

Just looked at our membership list - 29 active members - regular attendance is about 15 - and at least 1/3 of the current attendees are not members.
