From the OP article:

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," Hawking writes.

This is completely without logic.

How does gravity exist in nothingness?

What would be acted upon by gravity in nothingness?

Nothingmatter... The opposite of somethingmatter... within the loss of greymatter in the brain of Mr. Madman Hawking....

He's had Motor Neurone disease for nearly 50 years now. Average life expectancy for MN is two years. I have a theory that the hand of God has something to do with his extraordinary survival time with MN and that that hand may now be withdrawn since apparently the Nutty Professor considers he doesn't need Him anymore...

Aaron, I agree. No story here. Moving on. Sometimes I think these people make these anti-God statements just to get a reaction from us Christians. If we don't react, they shut up and go away.

Yawn. His belief has no impact on mine. I feel sorry for him.

He likly wasn't really theistic before ow. I inever got the sense that he was. He
Previously, he wrote that the laws of physics meant it was simply not necessary to believe that God had intervened in the Big Bang.
A lot of the virulent anti-ID'ers were saying that same thing in those debates a few years ago, and to them, "not necessary" basically equates to "probably doesn't exist, and virually disproven by the scientific method".

It seems his statement on God is connected with taking diiscoveries of other solar systems as somehow disproving Newton's theism. That's based on the assumtion that theism rests on our solar system being particularly "remarkable" (like in comparison to others), and "carefully designed just to please us human beings". A lot of religious people may have argued like that, but true theism surely doesn't rest on it. God never said that this was the only inhabitable solar system or only life in the unovers that He ever created.

Maybe he is just having a bad day.

Hawking's response is one he has been trying to put forward for some time. He is trapped by a universe that has now been proven (as far as naturalists can prove something) to have a beginning, and things that have beginnings have beginners, otherwise called (from Plato) a First Cause.

In fact, Hawking's perspective is now the minority perspective amongst cosmologists, who have seen evidence for a designed and finely tuned universe -- to the order of 10*37 power or greater probability -- in most of the areas measured.

The anthropic principles indicate that in every field measured as a requirement for life of any type (not to mention us!) to exist, the universe has been built specifically for just that reason. Strong and weak atomic forces, gravitation, speed of the expansion of the universe, heavy elements versus light elements, number, type, duration, distance, and frequency of super novae, etc., etc., etc., are all evidences of a designed universe confirmed by science -- and that field of study is now populated almost 100% by deists -- a good first step. May God have mercy and extend His effectual call to salvation in that camp!

If gravity is a law (creation) of God then why would it require anything? Look at it this way: do the 10 commandments require people?

Fancy way of saying, "What is, is."

You are not understanding the point here.

Hawking is saying that gravity is a physical law that accounts for the creation of the universe - without a need for God.

The problem with his logic is that without matter there is no gravity - so gravity cannot account for the creation of something from nothing.

After reading the account of what Hawking said, it doesn't appear that he is denying the possibility of (a) God but that God wasn't necessary for the creation of the universe.

I know "That does not compute", but that's what he seems to be advocating.

In the beginning, God created something that caused the Bib Bang or whatever without God's micromanagement.
