Fermented wine is NOT a gift from God. The unfermented "fruit of the vine" (which Jesus gave to His disciples to drink at the Last Supper) is what makes the heart glad.
Just wondered how grape juice makes the heart glad?

Finally a topic we agree on :)

Maybe she will argue the health benefits of grapes for the heart...

Many have read about the health benefits derived from moderate wine consumption. Resveratrol-the heart healthy compound found in wine is also found in Concord Grape Juice. Research at Cornell University showed that Concord Grape Juice actually contained more resveratrol than many wines.
One cup of 100% Concord grape juice contains 75% of the potassium of a banana. Research on phytochemicals has focused on flavonoids contained in Concord Grape Juice. These flavonoids, which were initially identified in research on red wine, are naturally occurring compounds.

And you think this scientific data is what the Biblical phrase refers to?

I do believe that the Apostle Paul would not have prescribed an alcoholic beverage to the young pastor Timothy... especially since in the same letter he instructed Timothy that leaders in the church are not to be given to wine.

No, my friend, Paul was speaking of a non-alcoholic beverage.

So you're not going to answer my question about the scientific data and the biblical phrase?

**
But then again I read the New Interesting Version... and it says, "not given to drunkeness".

What say ye?

1 Timothy 3:3 (KJV) Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; {given...: or, ready to quarrel, and offer wrong, as one in wine}

Paul could not see in the future to our grape juice of today. But he did have knowledge of preserved grape juice. We know this because historians recorded preserved grape juice from before Christ and up into the second century A.D.

So the "given to wine" means "ready to quarrel"?

And this preserved grape juice is what you believe the OT means is "making the heart glad" or "life merry"?

Ver. 3. Not given to wine; the word signifieth a common tippler, whether he drinks to the loss of his reason or no; a wine-bibber, that makes bibbing at a tavern his trade: no sitter at wine.
Poole

There are no less than 16 qualifications for one who desires the office of Pastor. All are listed in the first 7 verses of 1 Timothy 3. Abstinence from wine is one of the 16 listed here.

Actually there are NO qualifications, Poole notwithstanding, for the spiritual gift of Pastor/teacher, for that gift, like every other of the twenty-odd spiritual gifts, is given at the sole discretion of the Holy Spirit!

While one of the duties of elders is 'tending the flock', there is no office of 'poimen' or shepherd, for the church, delineated in the Bible, save for the designation of the Lord Jesus Christ, as the "Chief Shepherd."

Now, as to the office(s) of bishop(s)/elder(s), that is another question entirely.

Like the office of deacon, there are very specific qualifications involved. You might note that a bishop must be "not given to wine", while the deacons must be "not given to much wine", in the KJV phraseology. Uh', FTR, did you notice a slight difference in the wording, hence the qualifications, in the two phrases, for the bishop and the deacons? Also, FWIW, I am neither a bishop, nor a deacon, nor do I have the spiritual gift of pastor/teacher, but I am a tee-totaler.

Why not try rightly dividing the Word of Truth instead of twisting it to your own destruction?

Now you are saying because there are thorns and thistles growing in the ground, we need to drink alcoholic beverage?? Boy, are you deceived.
You twirl my words like a top, and where they stop is with your foot in your mouth. Just leave them be and hear the Word of the Lord.

If one were to look at the Hebrew word of cursed in Genesis 3:17 'rra', and compare it to the Hebrew word for curse in Genesis 8:21 'llq', one would see that the curse spoken of in the latter was not the curse pronounced upon the earth proclaimed by God in the garden of Eden.

God has not removed the curse pronounced to Adam.
Please read my post again. You state the obvious of continually reading what I say and then putting into your words, believing you have found a new truth. It is not a new truth. I just advised you of same, and others before I knew knew this truth.
