Brisbane,Queensland, Australia
Home to the Jagera and Turrbal Aboriginal clans before European Settlement in 1824.
Originally Morteon Bay Penal Settlement from 1824-1842. Settled due to reliable water supply, the Brisbane River, the worst New South Welsh convicts sent to this tough environment. There was a government decree forbiding any approach within 50 miles. By 1842 free settlers were able to come to Brisbane and England had been forced to halt the export of her prison population.

Population growth 1846 of 829 souls to almost 6000 by 1859 when Brisbane became the capital of the self governing colony of Queensland.
Federation 1901-2000
Queensland boomed as the fastest growing state, despite drought, floods and the Depression.
Brisbane City is a single council governing 1220 square kilometres.

General MacArthur had headquarters here as the Commander-in-Chief of the South West Pacific campaign. Thousands of American servicemen were stationed in Brisbane which swelled the population to over 750 000 souls. If the Japanese had invaded Australia the Brisbane Line would have constituted the front line of Australias defence.

Newport is 22 miles from everything. 560 folks, no stop lights, one bar and three churches. Claim to fame? Linus Yale invented the Yale lock right down the street. The town fathers thought his little factory would be smelly and ruin the quaintness of the village. Linus moved to Conn and you know the rest of the story.
So if you plan on going to Ithaca wear tall rubber boots!

I have been to the Franklin Parish Catfish Festival!!
Some friends invited me several years ago. I watched a catfish fillet-eating contest. Those guys ate more catfish in a few minutes than I have in my lifetime! It was a lot of fun.

Alot of those magnificent old homes did not survive the Civil War. They were few and far between in the first place because most farmers at the time lived in relative poverty anyway.Originally posted by Su Wei:

But the few antebellum mansions and plantation homes that survived the Civil War are historical wonders. It's worth everyone's time to spend a vacation touring some of those old homes.

Cleveland, Tennessee. Population roughly 40,000. Recently declared the fifth metropolitan area of Tennessee.
Cleveland is the world HQ of the Church of God (Cleveland, TN), as well as the world HQ of the Church of God of Prophecy (both are pentecostal).
Cleveland is also the home of the world's largest Christian bookstore, Pathway Books. Pathway is the publishing house of the CoG, and the bookstore is located in an old WalMart building.
Lee University is located here in Cleveland. Lee is a Church of God Christian liberal arts college. It is located just off of downtown, along Ocoee Street. It is very scenic, with all the grand old houses of Ocoee Street blending right in.
The Ocoee River is just 15-20 minutes east of Cleveland. The Ocoee was the sight of the 1996 Olympic whitewater events. It is also inside the Cherokee National Forest, and is a part of the Great Smoky Mountains. Other local rivers included the Hiwasee and the Tennessee.
Cleveland sits on I-75. Knoxville is a little over an hour north. Chattanooga is thirty miles south. Atlanta is an hour and a half away.

Marysville, Ohio: population about 16,000.County seat of Union County. The town is 30 miles NW of the state capital of Columbus. World HQ for Scotts(grass seed and fertilizer). Home of a major Honda auto and motorcycle manufacturing plant. Home of the Ohio Reformatory for Women!
We usually have a ballon festival in August. Although there are no colleges/universities/seminaries in Union County itself, we are within an hour's drive of a couple dozen such institutions like Ohio State University. Marysville was established in 1819, so we will be having our bicentennial in only 14 years. Union County has the birthplace of Charles W. Fairbanks, US Vice-President under Teddy Roosevelt. We also have the burial site for James Robinson, grandfather of Barbara Bush. "Judge" Robinson was also a member of our state Supreme Court.

Only city I know of in the W hemisphere that has a life-sized replica of "other" Athens' Parthenon.
For several years my sister was postmaster of the little PA community of Kulpsville, PA, where the man for whom Nashvile is named is buried--MG Francis Nash of the NC Militia.
Nash was wounded @ the Battle of Germantown (now part of Philadelphia), 1777 [this one was not, shall we say, one of the colonists' most stunning victories].
Medical science being what it was on the colonists' side at the time resulted on his (and several others from NC) death.
The story goes that a delegation approached Gen. Washington and asked what they should do.
His reply reportedly was to bury Nash & Co. with whatever appropriate military honors they could muster at the nearest cemetery they could find and then head on to Valley Forge.
Thus to this day, the remains of Gen. Nash & Co. lie buried in the cemetery of the Towamenacin Mennonite [a denomination that historically opposes war] Church's cemetery, Kulpsville, PA.

Cabool is in Texas county, the largest county in Missouri. It has just over 2,000 population. It was supposedly named for Kabul, Afganistan, which an 1800's era map shows was once spelled Cabool.
There are lots of small farms in this area, mostly dairy or beef cattle, but also a few sheep and goats. There are also some more exotic animals like emu, ostrich, and llama, but in that category, bison are more common.
Like most small towns our activities seem to revolve around the school. Our weekly paper devotes 3-4 pages just to school related news.
Every year we have a city-wide revival in which most of the local churches participate. Each church takes a turn hosting the meeting, providing the main speaker and music, basically "doing church" the way they are used to. It's a great time for Christians of all "flavors" to come together in worship.

I live in Lebanon, Tennessee. The information listed below is from the City of Lebanon website http://citybridge.com/lebanon/
On Nov. 13, 1801, the town of Lebanon was authorized. The appointed commissioners chose the land around a gushing spring where in 1800, Neddy Jacobs had built his log cabin. Seeing the spot in a grove of red cedars, commissioner Christopher Cooper said, "This is the place." The cedars gave the place its name, Lebanon, a reminder of the Biblical land of the cedars. On Nov. 23, 1819, the City of Lebanon was officially incorporated.
Cumberland University opened in September, 1842 with 45 students. Its first permanent building, located on the southeastern corner of College and East Spring Streets, near the Town Square, was burned during the War Between the States. The new building at the present location was built in 1896.
Thousands of Confederate and Federal soldiers passed through Lebanon between 1861 and 1865. On May 5, 1862, a fierce battle was fought on and around the Square when Federal troops surprised the cavalry troops of Col. John Hunt Morgan. Morgan, who had spent the night at the home of Mayor Anderson, and most of his men escaped to the east. On Dec. 6, 1862, Morgan again passed through the square with 800 Confederate cavalry and 600 infantry on his way to Hartsville, where he captured 2,000 Federal troops the next day, escorting them back through Lebanon toward Murfreesboro.
130 Confederate Veterans, including General Hatton, are buried in Lebanonís historic Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Lebanon was home to the famous Castle Heights Military Academy, established in 1902. The school was originally a prestigious private boys and girls school, but was later changed to an all-male military academy. The school closed in the 1980ís, following the decline of military schools during the Vietnam War era. The schoolís "Main" building is now preserved as the City of Lebanon Administration Building (City Hall).
Lebanon became the center of the Second Army's World War II maneuvers. General George Patton's tanks rumbled through the town before deployment to Europe. The Cumberland University campus was the headquarters and a monument there commemorates those events.
Side note: And for all the Cracker Barrel lovers here...you can thank Lebanon, TN. It is the birthplace of the Cracker Barrel chain and we still have corporate headquarters here as well.

I also am from Louisiana originally but am currently living in Colorado. The nearest town is Telluride, famous as a ski resort and hangout for various celebrities, but I don't consider it home. Too trendy and new-age for me. I spend more time in Ouray, which is something of a hidden treasure, although very popular in the summer for hiking and off-roading. It's a beautiful place, and I hope to end up here permanently.
Jackson, Tennessee is located about 90 miles from Memphis and 120 from Nashville on I-40. It is the home of the legendary Carl Perkins and the International Rock-a-billy Hall of Fame, Wink Martindale, American's TV game show host, and the Miss Tennessee Pageant. Jackson was named after Andrew Jackson, one of two U.S. Presidents from Tennessee.
We have approximately 80,000 folks running around Jackson trying to get into one of the many restaurants here. We have more restaurants for our size than New York City does. Guess you can tell what Jackson's past time is.
Former Carolina Panther Rae Carruth was found hiding in the trunk of a car here in Jackson when he was running from the law following the murder of his girlfriend (his son's mother).
Also, Fred Lane of the Carolina Panters was from Jackson. Fred was killed by his wife after he returned to NC from a visit to Jackson.
Seems like we either raise the bad boys or attract them from I-40.

Andrews NC is in Cherokee county and has a population of about 1,000. We will be celebrating our centennial this year. We are the southwestern tip of NC and people like to claim we are equal distance from Knoxville, Chattanooga, Asheville, and Atlanta. The translation of course is that we are and hour and a half away from anything.
Cherokee county was Indian territory until the removal Cherokee on the trail of tears in 1838 (not exactly our finest moment). Andrews lies in one of the most beautiful spots on earth, a valley surrounded by mountains with the Valley River flowing from Andrews to Murphy. I do love living here. Everyone should get to live in a place they love.
Today was especially great with bright sunshine in the afternoon, clear roads in the valley, but mountains covered in snow.

Hey Scarlett~ You know what? In all the years they've had that Catfish Fest, I've never been to it...we have tried to take our abortion pics there but weren't allowed in.
Casper, Wyoming, 50k in the center of the state and along the old Oregon Trail. Part of the actual Trail is now CY Avenue, on which I live. In doing road work about a mile down CY, they discovered Civil War/Indian War weapons, etc. Benefits of the largest city - mall, regional medical center, all sports tournaments, etc held here. 4 hours to Yellowstone (first US National Park), Grand Teton, Black Hills, Devils Tower (first US National Monument) and where the high prairies meet the Rockies.
1/8 of state population lives within 8 miles of my house. We are at the base of Casper Mountain, with switchbacks up to a beautiful county park, falls, most of the top of the mountain is pine meadows, picnic, camping, skiing and snowmobiling. North Platte River is 8 blocks from the house and huge reservoirs just a few miles upstream for walleye and trout.
Chase antelope (goats) and mulies (deer) off our clinic bushes almost daily. Hard working independent people, very conservative, not willing to listen to anyone. Think Dick Cheney (was our neighbor for years), Al Simpson, and Crazy Horse.

We are at the base of Casper Mountain, with switchbacks up to a beautiful county park, falls, most of the top of the mountain is pine meadows, picnic, camping, skiing and snowmobiling. North Platte River is 8 blocks from the house and huge reservoirs just a few miles upstream for walleye and trout.
Chase antelope (goats) and mulies (deer) off our clinic bushes almost daily. Hard working independent people, very conservative, not willing to listen to anyone. Think Dick Cheney (was our neighbor for years), Al Simpson, and Crazy Horse.
You all live in nice places, but a little pathetic compared to ANYWHERE in Wyoming. Like no place on earth.

If you're a fan of the Seattle Mariners, then you've undoubtedly heard the name of pitcher Jamie Moyer (#50). Moyer pitched one inning in the 2003 MLB All Star game, and while he was on the mound, no one from the NL advanced on any base.
Moyer was a 1981 graduate of Souderton Area High School. While he lists Sellersville, PA, as his place of birth, it's possible [though I can't confirm this] that comes from the fact that he may have been born at Grand View Hospital in Sellersville.
