Ten Reasons Why I Will Not...

With all the talk about the passion on BB I just had to get into it. The following is taken from
Pastor, D.M. Coe (He's not my pastor)

"10 Reasons I Will NOT Be Seeing "THE PASSION"

'Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ' has been the talk of the town for several months now. For the last few weeks I have been weighing the pros and cons of this film. Many people have been asking me if I was going to see it, and until recently I did not have an answer. After much meditation, the reasons below are why I have decided AGAINST seeing the film.

1. I am still not convinced that this film does not infringe on the 2nd Commandment.

2. Mel Gibson is a strict Catholic. I am a strict BAPTIST.

3. 'The Passion' is based partly on a 19th century book of visions from a German nun and mystic, Anne Catherine Emmerich.

4. I have never liked mixing my religion with the arts, humor, entertainment, etc.

5. "... if they hear not Moses and the prophets neither will they be persuaded..."

6. Monica Bellucci, who plays the part of Mary, the mother of Jesus, can be found all over the Internet in various stages of undress.

7. The Lord ordained 'preaching' as a way to reach the lost not 'acting'.

8. I do not wish to have images of actor Jim Caviezel in my mind the next time I pray.

9. I believe this is yet another subtle trick of Satan to make the Catholic church look 'Christian'.

10. I believe it is yet another way for Satan to illicit thousands of false professions of faith.'

I'll add one more I don't believe in going to the movie house to see a 'good' film. To me it's just like digging to the bottom of a sewer to find to a cheese buger.

Good post.
I too tried a Google search on three other actresses in this movie, but the Smart Filter here blocked all but a few Italian language sights, so I have no idea what they said. The Smart Filter blocks those sights with objectionable material. What does that say?

Minor correction on #6: Monica Bellucci, if I'm not mistaken, played the part of Mary Magdalene, not the "Queen of Heaven."

I am considering going for one reason... and pretty much that reason only. A lost man at work that I have concerns about approached me to tell me that he had seen the movie. He knows that I am a different sort of "Christian" in that I don't like dirty jokes, foul language, etc.

He seemed moved by the movie but I couldn't discuss it- good, bad, nor indifferent. Jesus went into the homes of sinners to reach the lost... I think I might be able to hold my nose concerning the problems listed above if I can reach this young lost man.

A hearty AMEN to that! A local church in my area has Judgement Journey every fall (in hopes, I'm sure, of keeping Christians our of the haunted houses, etc.). Supposedly, after taking the Journey through Revelations put on my live actors (church members), people who get saved ring a bell at the end! I have heard reports of several hundred folks getting saved each year. Somehow, I just don't know about that. It is of real concern to me. So, the point about false professions coming about due to this movie is a real threat that maybe some have not considered.

Scott, do you need to handle dog poop in order to discuss its qualities?

How about just asking him what questions he has, and then showing him what the Bible says?

I wouldn't consider that an accurate analogy. Someone might just as easily have asked Jesus likewise, "Do you have to sit in a dung heap to relate to the sewer dwellers?" Of course His answer seems to have been "yes" since submitted even to the death of the cross between two low lifes.

How about just asking him what questions he has, and then showing him what the Bible says?
He has no basis for questions. He doesn't know the Bible enough to recognize that this movie wasn't pure gospel.

The film "The Passion of the Christ" is NOT dog poop! That's absolutely ridiculous. I've seen it, and I think DM Coe's concerns are overblown, petty, hypocritical, and divisive amongst the brethren. I think Scott should be applauded for, franlky, doing what Jesus would have done.

I doubt very highly he had the same concerns over "Jesus of Nazareth", "The Ten Commandments", the recent claymation "The Miracle Worker", or "The Prince of Egypt".

Scott J,

I think you have a legitimate reason for going to see the movie if you think your discussion of the movie will possibly help this young man. I think that's much more important than keeping Mel from getting your buck--which is a good cause, too; but in the priority of causes, I think discussing the movie with a lost person moved by it wins out.

If you want, I'll stay home in your place and convince my kids not to go as well. Does that help?

FYI, in my previous post, where I said "I doubt very highly he had the same concerns over...", I was referring to DM COe, not Scottj.

Sorry for any confusion...

The analogies y'all have posted are NOT correct, either.

Jesus did not go to the sinners to become like them; He went to the sinners to save them. He did not do as they did; He convicted them to do differently.

I do not go to a movie I know is incorrect in order to win someone to the Lord. I sit that person down and ask, "What did the movie tell you? Well, let's see what the Bible actually says about that."

Even if I thought that is okay to go to the movies, I would not do so because it could very easily destroy a testimony that I have with some sinner, they don't know what movie I'm going to.
But you will never have to worry about seeing me at the local movie house, I JUST DON'T GO!

Going to the movies can destroy a testimony with a sinner? I wasn't aware that going to see the movie "Miracle" (the last movie I saw) would compromise my testimony. Sounds a bit legalistic. Especially considering I went with a church group.

Johnv, I saw Toy Story 2 and Spy Kids at the theater! YIKES! BTW... I see NO DIFFERENCE in going to the movie, buying it off your satellite or cable or renting it from the local video store.

Me neither, Diane. It would be interesting to know if people who are against going to the movies own any videos or DVDs!

When my son was a teenager, I took him to see "The Killing Fields." Why? Because I wanted him to see what evil looks like so he'd never forget it.

Though it's difficult for some people to believe, there are more evil things in the world than going to movies. Just ask any soldier just returned from Iraq or Afghanistan.

I just remarked on a thread about our favorite gospel songs that I wonder how our 'it's not in the Bible so it's not usable' members would take apart the great hymns!

I think many people watch filth on t.v. and think since no one knows.... God knows!

We must all carefully consider what consequences our lives will have upon another. Whether it is meat, wine, esteeming one day holier than another, or going/not going to the theater, it must be a matter of faith between you and the Lord. And I say we should respect the decisions of those who choose not to participate in certain things because they do not have the faith that it would be right to do that thing.

Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way. (Romans 14:13)

I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. (Romans 14:14)

But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died. (Romans 14:15)

For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men. (Romans 14:18)

Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. (Romans 14:19)

For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence. (Romans 14:20)

It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. (Romans 14:21)

Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. (Romans 14:22)

And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin. (Romans 14:23)

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. (1 Corinthians 10:23)

Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth. (1 Corinthians 10:24)

And skipping on down . . .

But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that showed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof: (1 Corinthians 10:28)

Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience? (1 Corinthians 10:29)

How will our actions affect the conscience of another? How seldom, I believe, do we consider that part of being a Christian.

Just a few thoughts before we beat someone over the head for that practice.
