America's three big rivers all get in water from Montana. And it's still a very independent state.
Uh, the big three are the Mississippi, Missouri, and the Ohio.

Only the Missouri has its headwaters in Montana. The Mississippi originates in Minnesota and the Ohio headwaters come from the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers of Pennsylvania. :)

Of the major western rivers, the Columbia has its headwaters in British Columbia, Canada. :)

Must not forget the Kanawha/New River which heads up in North Carolina as the New River, flows thru Virginia, renamed the Kanawha in West Va. and empties into the Ohio.
