To-day I want to retell a story from the history of General William Booth.

Years ago, a man fell in love with the world's unlovely ones, because Jesus' love was in his heart. He went to the East End of London to help the poor, lost sinners, which were there in great numbers. For days, he stood in the streets among the poor, lost men and women. He loved them because he loved the souls of men. One night he went home to his wife and said, "Darling, I have given myself, I have given you and the children, to work for God among those sick souls." His wife smiled and took his hand, and the two knelt and prayed. That was the beginning of the Salvation Army, and the great work of William Booth.

Some years later, someone asked, "General Booth, tell me what has been the secret of your success." General Booth hesitated for a moment, and the tears trickled down his cheeks. Then, he said, "I will tell you the secret: God has had all there was of me to have! There have been greater men, and men with greater opportunities; but from the day I got the poor of London on my heart, and a vision of what Jesus Christ would do for them, I made up my mind that God would have all there was of William Booth. God has had all the adoration of my heart, all the power of my will, and all the influence of my life."

I can tell you that East London houses the poorest of the poor, criminality abounds and you can lose your watch at the first stall and buy it back at the last, but you can't say anything bad about the Salvation Army. They did more for the souls of East London than any other church group.

Would to God that we all had the same drive and commitment that General Booth had in those days.

Cheers,

Jim

A little four-year old African girl was sold as a slave. She did not know what love was. Indeed, her name, "Keodi", meant, "Nobody loves me."

When she was ten years old, Keodi got sick. Her body was covered with ugly sores. Then, he master turned her out. He did not want her any longer. The natives would have nothing to do with her. She wandered about homeless, hungry, uncared for.

Some kind missionaries found Keodi. They took her into their home, cleaned her up and cared for her. They took care of the sores on her body and provided clean clothing for her. She could not believe that someone actually loved her.

The missionaries told Keodi about Jesus. They told her how greatly Jesus loved her, and how He had died on a cross for her. They told Keodi that they too loved her because His love was in their hearts.

Little Keodi looked down at her clean dress, her clean body and the bandaged sores, and asked, "Is this love?" The missionaries told her that it was the very expression of love.

We too, can show the love of God to others by being kind an helpful.

(This is a true story from a missionaries report from the early 50's)

Soup, soap and salvation...and in that order.

Cheers,

Jim

I am pleased that you benefit from these stories. I figure that one can get common devotionals from many sources. Some of these stories go back a few years. They do have devotional value. Many of them I told to children during the morning service as they were assembling for junior church.

Dr. George W. Truett was entertained one tme in the home of a wealthy oilman in Texas. After dinner. the man took him upstairs to his flat rooftop, and showed him large fields of oil derricks. He said, "Dr. Truett, I came to this country 25 years ago wihout a penny. Now I own everything as far as you can see." He pointed in each direction and listed his assets. There were fields of grain eastward. To the south were the oil derricks. Northward were herds of cattle, and again pointed westward to the huge dense forest. "All this is mine, " he said, rather proudly. "Twenty-five years ago I was penniless, but I worked hard and saved, and to-day I own everything you can see in any direction from this rooftop."

The man hesitated, expecting to hear praise from Dr. Truett. The praise did not come. Dr. Truett liad a loving hand on his shoulder, pointed upward, and asked, "My friend, How much to you own in that direction?" The man lowered his head in shame and said, "I never thought about that."

How sad it is when one can lay up treasures on earth, and forget about the free treasures in heaven.

Remember, we are laying up treasures in heaven, and they are free to us. All we need do is believe on the Lord Jesus.

I was just reading John Wesley's remarks about the Marquis of Rockingham. "He lately had
40,000 pound a year in England and 15 or 20,000 pound in Ireland. And what has he now? Six feet of earth.

Thanks Jim.

Very true and also very sad for those who don't know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.

It certainly helps me to keep a sense of proportion.

So true , Jim, we own nothing, apart from the word of God and that is to be given out. When we give it out, however, we are truly blessed with riches of spirit....... now that is something worth having.

Some years ago, a young school girl in Birmingham, England, accepted Christ in a gospel meeting. The moment she found the Saviour, she had a great longing to win others to Him.

Several years later, when she was in form school, she tried to bring her classmates to the Saviour. Sometimes she would speak to a girl during school break. Then she would run upstairs to get her Bible, but when she returned, the girl would be gone. The opportunity lost.

She would memorize certain texts, but she often became confused trying to link the verses to the situation. She decide to carry a little Testament with her at all times. This way she could show people right from God's word, anytime, anywhere.

She showed another Christian girl, and she too began carrying a little testament with her.

This was the beginning the Pocket Testament League, a movement in England which has girdled the world!

It began because because a young girl wanted to be ready and a faithful witness for Jesus Christ.

Since that time, of course, other organizations have developed and Bibles are distributed all over.

The thing is, it all began with a little school girl who cared. How much do we care in our daily living. Little things like helping someone across a street. Helping older people in their homes. Just saying hello to a stranger and creating a smile. We never know when these little things will explode into great wonders for Jesus Christ.

Cheers,

Jim

Another true event put into th form of a story.

A chaplain on the battlefield came to a man who was wounded, lying on the ground. He asked the wounded soldier, "Would you like me to read something from the Bible?

The soldier replied, "I would rather have a drink of water. I am very thirsty." The chaplain took out his canteen and gave the soldier a drink.

Then the soldier said. Would you please put something under my head?" The chaplain took off his overcoat, rolled it up, and put it under the soldier's head for a pillow.

"Now," said the soldier, "I need something over me, I am very cold." The chaplain took off his coat and spread it over the soldier.

The wounded soldier looked gratefully at the chaplain and said, "Thank you!" Then he added, "If there is anything in the Bible that makes a man do what you have done for me, you may read it to me."

The chaplain opened his Bible and read: "...For I was hungry, and you gave me meat. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in: naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison and you came to me.....When did all this happen, Lord Jesus?....And Jesus answered, Inasmuch as you did unto the least of my brethren, you have done it to me." (Matthew 25)

Then the chaplain said, "This same Jesus is the One who died for you and for me. Hold out your hand and Jesus will hold it. Hold out your heart and Jesus will change it and send His Holy Spirit to live in you.

This soldier lived to learn more. Many soldiers do not. Let us not pray for a battlefield to present the living Christ, but we are in a battlefield already, and voices are crying in the midst of the battle for the truth. First it must be offered by us, and then supported in the Word.

Cheers, and bless,

Jim

People like to travel. Often, before they embark on travels, they will obtain brochures about different places of interest.

I came upon this travel brochure about the famous Yellowstone Park in the United States. I have no travel plans at present, but read it anyway. It told of all the precious and interesting sites at that park.

One thing stood out to me. It was a place called The Handkerchief Pool. It says, if you drop a dirty handkerchief on the top of this pool of water, it will disappear. In a little while it will come back to the top of the water, clean and white. Then you can take it out with a stick. The pool has cleansed the soiled handkerchief.

Those who know me, will appreciate that I will find a sermon almost anywhere, and often make a story out of the information. This is no exception.

Immediately I thought of Isaiah 1:18, "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool."

We look unto Jesus and have all our sins washed in His blood, and we are made clean in Him.

This passage says, "Bring no more vain oblations (an offering to God). Never mind bringing mindless promises. "Come now, " God says. Don't wait, "Come now..." and He will make all things new.

Beyond salvation, how often do we dwell on the things we can do nothing about, when God is waiting to give us the blessings of a lifetime. Throw that filthy handkerchief upon the water, and it shall return clean. We can throw all those filthy, annoying thing of life into His hands, and they shall return to us clean and pure.

How often do you look about you only to discover that God speaks to us in a clear voice once we remove our fingers from our ears, and hands from our eyes, and blanket over our hearts?

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow.

Cheers, and bless,

Jim

A missionary in China was living a defeated life. He was always sad and discouraged. He prayed long for victory over sadness and discouragement. Finally, he decided to leave his work and pray until victory came. He went to the home of a fellow missionary to try to find rest and refreshment in his life.

On the wall of the guest room was a motto with these words: "Try Thanksgiving." The missionary was attracted like a magnet to this sign on the wall. He began to think, "Have I been praying and weeping all this time and not praising, not thanking God?" He immediately began praising the Lord, and his soul was flooded with light and sunshine. He found that praise changes things! Praise changes you.

Psalm 98

O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he has done marvellous things....The Lord has made known his salvation.....He has remembered His mercy.....Make a joyful noise unto the LORD......

There was a distance runner in the 1967 Olympics in Montreal who fell and stumbled during the distance race. He injured himself and had to rest at side of the route. He was hours behind anyone else.

In the arena, an American racer had just won his fifth gold medal, a chap named Bruce Jenner. At this moment this racer entered the arena, running quite slowly, 3 hours behind everyone else. Bruce Jenner had just run his victory lap. He turned, watched and waited. WHen this poor runner arrived and crossed the line, Jenner went to him, shook his hand, and reportedly said, "It is not that you won or lost, but that you completed the course." How magnanimous of Jenner. I shall never forget that.

What a lesson for all of us. It matters that we finish the course, and to this we add,,,,with praise in our hearts for our most precious Lord.

Cheers, and bless,

Jim
