Compare the cost of health care to that of the war in Iraq. If you didn't have medical insurance which one would you support? The number of Americans without medical insurance id 50M and rising, a large number of them children.

Agreed. This is not a constitutional guarantee.

And yes, I have a right to say this, because:

1. I'm an American citizen.
2. I'm a taxpayer (no "Earned Income Credit" here...I refuse it).
3. I pay for my family's healthcare out of my pocket.
4. We are a lower-middle class, one-income family...making it just fine, thanks.

When the government provides your healthcare, then the "camel's nose is in the tent." The gubmint then has a right to tell you how to live your life...down to the number of grams of saturated fat you can eat per day. Why? Because...since they pay for your healthcare, they own you. They can then do silly things, like outlaw saturated fats. Why? Because their money is spent on your care. It's no longer your determination, but theirs.

Think about how much it used to cost to make a long distance phone call. The government-propped up monopoly was expensive! Now...thanks to competition and free enterprise, it's much cheaper to call cross-country now than it was before. When the government gets involved, prices go up, and quality goes down (with few exceptions). We can see the quality of government healthcare by looking at Walter Reed MEdical Center. Do we really want that bunch in charge of our medical services...and thus dictating to us all of our lifestyle choices? That's not freedom, IMO.

Well, speaking as one who doesn't have health insurance, I do not support the Democratic plan on healthcare, and I will discontinue my support for remaining in Iraq if the troop surge doesn't stabilize the region around Baghdad in the next few months.

It won't stabilize the region, and everyone other than the Bush Acolytes (to usurp a phrase from talk-show host "Lionel") knows that. I am curious to see what the Administration will say when this comes to pass.......

I have been middle class, and I've been quite poor. (well below the poverty level)

Back in 1998, when we were at our financial worst, (dirt poor, in debt, and needing some medical attention),
I conceded and went to a free clinic for some care. I was cursed at, called names, and waited 3 hours for a "doctor," who could not speak good enough English to help me. I decided right then, that no matter what it took, and God willing, my wife would NEVER have to endure such dehumanizing treatment, ever. I decided (and forgive my arrogance) that I would go without food and necessities myself to ensure that my wife and children would never be treated as I was that afternoon.

There have been times I've had to work like a dog to take care of business, but I have on my own made sure that my family had healthcare. Once again...forgive my arrogance, but if mosf folks would have adopted my attitude, there wouldn't be the crisis there is in our healthcare system today.

It is MY job to secure healthcare for my family...NOT the government's job. It's expensive. It hurts sometimes. But I handle it. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

The federal government has no Constitutional mandate to control, regulate or fund education.

It is the province of the individual states.

What I found more intrusive was Richardson's (I believe) call for a nationwide public smoking ban.

Arkansas recently passed such a law, and I have been 100% in favor of it from day one. I love it because I can now go eat with my wife or with my family, and I no longer have to worry about my asthma.

However, I would not want the federal government to take such action because it would be stretching the Constitution to the breaking point.

Why don't we just go the rest of the way? Let's have the federal government provide our clothing, food, and shelter in addition to our medical care. This will work because they're already so involved in educating us and the teaching seems to be working. Add to the list entertainment as well - that should also be the federal government's responsibility. Let's just all work directly for the state - orgainized into local communes - and then have the "elected" leaders decide who needs what and dole it out accordingly. The children will, of course, be well cared for in this system and will surely grow up admiring such a system. Just think! No more worries or cares! No more need to plan for the future! No more inequity in the accuisition nor distribution of wealth! If you need something, the government will provide it once you convince them you need it. Just look at the success stories other nations around the world have had with it. Are you ready for it?

However, we need to stop giving Congress and the President a blank check when it comes to spending. Here is some of the waste from the current “emergency” war spending bill:

$14 billion for Hurricane Katrina aid
$4 billion for “emergency farm relief”
$50 million for the Democratic convention in Denver
$50 million for the Republican convention in St. Paul, Minn.
$13 million for “ewe replacement and retention”
$24 million for sugar beets growers
$95 million for dairy producers
$3.5 million for the Capitol’s guided–tour program
$20 million for insect infestation control in Nevada

The voters need to start getting outraged and demanding that our "leaders" stop hiding all this "pork spending" in these bills. This isn't the first time they have wasted billions on things that have nothing to do with the bill that is being passed by Congress and signed into law by the President!

Then you may make your checks payable to the U.S. Treasury. No one will stop you.

Most of the Christians I know have given hundreds of dollars to aid Katrina victims, not counting furnishing homes, apartments, utilities, food and employment assistance. We know the money was well spent because we controlled how it was spent and we saw the result.

Being forced to give it to the government to spend would be ineffective as well as counterproductive. The government cannot spend my money as well as I can.

Why would I voluntarily give them a cent to do things I can do directly and more effectively. Yet you advocate that the government just take it and spend it any way they see fit.

Strange...and inconsistent. Your distrust of the government has been amply demonstrated many times over right here at BB.
