The Gap Theory

No, it was the deep. It was liquid water. From those waters God formed the heavens and the earth.
There is no evidence of whether it was liquid, vapor, or what. And you post essentially admits there was no Earth. If God formed it, there was nothing for Satan to be "god" over before it was formed. And it goes back to my point about time. Creation was accomplished within time, as evidence by His creation of light to divide day and night before He did anything else.

Rob,

Have you read Genesis 1-4 A Linguistic, Literary and Theological Commentary by C. John Collins.... Just wonder if Sailhammer's work is similar in nature.
It's another top shelf book of mine.
His books have significantly changed how I approach and interpret scripture.

His book and conclusions are quite different from Sailhamer's.

Just a note of thought for the discussion: Why do you think God even describes His work being done in days? Was it such a complex job for God that it took Him “all day/24 hours” to complete each tasks? Hardly, it (all in creation) could have been done in an instant, His Word could have said, “God created the Heavens and the Earth in an instant and this included…” but for some reason time periods were added in His Word to enlighten our understanding. - Probably because there were periods of time (a gap(s))

involved…

IMO it is likely there was ongoing divine judgments that took place as creation (His work) moved forward unto what we have today (this age)…one might even say that creation of the Earth is yet to be new and that the old (first) Earth will pass away within its “day of light and darkness” (Rev 21:1). The earth is yet to be dissolved and transformed into a second (new) Earth all within a “day” - another example of a period of time in the formation of the Earth referred to as a day.

(2Pe 3:12) Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

It seems to me to allow no possibility for “days” to be periods of time seems a very shallow interpretation of the information that we are given in the Word.

Hebrews 11:3. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

Genesis 1:3. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

It appears that the first thing God spoke into existence was Light!

Yep, that is what physicists call the "moment" of quark confinement during the inflation period. Light (electromagnetic radiation) began to occur at that instance of the creation.

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5

Who/what is the adversary of the Light/God?

To open their eyes, to turn from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, Acts 26:18

Is it not Darkness/Satan who has the power of death?

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Gen 1:1 period.

And/But the earth was/became without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. V2

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; Job 38:4-6 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? V7 whoever they were.

Were they joyful over? And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep

Who/what was this darkness on the face of the deep which has no part with the Light/God.

God began time before arranging the stars and sun on day four by dividing himself Light from the present darkness Satan upon the earth into 12 hours of light, day, morning and 12 hours of darkness, evening, night see John 11:9,10
Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

That division and the beginning of this present ordered system, the foundation of the world, is day one.

Those verses are speaking of walking with God or walking with Satan who has the power of death and Jesus the Son of God is about to raise Lazarus from the power of Satan, Death.

No, just that there was no form that made it distinct from any other part of the universe. The heavens and the earth, the universe, were the deep.

If God formed it, there was nothing for Satan to be "god" over before it was formed.
So?

And it goes back to my point about time. Creation was accomplished within time,
Time is a part of the heavens and the earth. Time is a created thing.
as evidence by His creation of light to divide day and night before He did anything else.
The narrative plainly states that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth before He said, "Let there be light."

Anyway, so what? The angels are not a part of this creation. They may visit it from time to time, but they are not a part of it and exist quite independently thereof. The Genesis account is about the world of men, not the world of spirits.

Oh the irony; how many of the loudest gap theory bashers make no bones of inserting a thousands of years gap in between the 69th and 70th week of Daniel? Lol...

About 2500 years and counting; but that is nothing compared to the "GAP", drum roll please!

Could it be that this passage refers to items being made from sub atomic elements that are only "seen" through splitting apart the atom?
