Thank you rbell for reinstating what i have said in several post already on this subject.

Just got done watching the EVIL show Wife Swap. any of you out there watch "wife Swap" or "trading Spouses" I like the shows because they take two families that are extreme and switch the moms and hopfully they can learn from each other. i like my teenagers to watch it so they see that we are actually normal and not extreme either way. they should be thankful that we are fair.

The one very strick "Lord over" family proved my point tonight. again balance is the key

I like SFICs assessment.. but let's take it a little further... So the TV is plugged into Electric, which is connected to the house... in which sets a TV.....

Clearly, we need to get rid of our houses... Then we would be sinless.

Of what I have read, do you know what bother's me most? Its that some preachers think this guy went to far, but only because it was so radical, extreme, and shocking. No, that is not really what bothers me most. What bothers me most is when ANYTHING besides the faithful teaching and preaching of the Word of God gets priority.

Paul did not tell Timothy, build their self-esteem, make the service comfortable for the seekers, keep it interesting for the crowds, resist the evil trends of your culture...

Nope. Paul's advice to preachers...

2 Tim 4:1-5
1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

Should a message be culturally relevant? Of course. Should it be a spectacular presentation? I think not. Anything that draws attention to the preacher rather than the TEXT of God's Word is at best secondary. Sensationalism is not what we are called to present. We are called simply to "preach the Word". Anything less AND anything more just very well may be disobedience...

I think you should all migrate to where I live in the Great White North, where we all live in igloos without electricity. I plug my computer into the currant bush. Good thing spring is here. Those ice mosquitos and snow snakes are nasty. But it won't be long before the invasion of the black flies and the giant killer mosquitoes.
Don't forget to bring your dogs (preferably huskies). The sleds are a bargain up here. There are some Amish tribes up here that fit in nicely with the Eskimo and Inuit peoples. If you believe that Christianity means getting closer to nature, then this is the place for you.

Two things: Even my outhouse is an igloo. We missed our annual April fool's blizzard, though. It snowed on the 31st, the 2nd, and the 3rd (we'll see about tomorrow), but skipped the 1st for the first time in a loooong time.

Secondly, a thought popped into my head from my past, and I was reminded of someone else who hated TV and smashed them with hammers: Wendy O. Williams of the Plasmatics. (Do a Google: I will not post links to them on a Christian forum.)

I'll take you up on that. My wife and I raised 8 kids with NO TV! In fact I'll give you IFB bashers something else.....our three daughters never wore pants. Our kids don't smoke, drink, dance or go to movies. Our oldest is 32. He just called me Sunday night and told me he was voted in as a trustee in his church, Victory Baptist in Harrisonburg VA. Our next son is a deacon in Valley Baptist, Craigsville Va. Our oldest daughter and her husband are missionaries to Iceland. They are all married with children. The other two sons are members of IFB churches. The three still at home are with us in our church and sing Gospel Bluegrass music. Balance? I don't know what you mean by balance. If it is to let them be worldly......forget it. Oh, by the way, we didn't watch "wife swapping" or what ever last night either and I bet our kids in VA. didn't either! As far as this Steve fellow smashing his TV.....the only thing he did wrong was tell you guys. (Prov. 14:9) You know I remember reading where Billy Sunday smashed a chair over the pulpit one time to show how mad he was at the devil. I bet you guys would have gone to seed over that also!

I could. I grew up without TV, not because my parents were morally opposed but because they thought it was a waste of time. I have one now but there are only a handful of shows that I watch.

I'm a Bible college kid. I watch basically no TV anyway, and I'm so used to not having it available that it pretty much stays off even when I'm home. I watched... one hour?... while I was home for Spring Break. So I'll take your challenge, and I've met your challenge several times over, Ben.

Congratulations on a good job of parenting, Shiloh. Sounds like your kids turned out great.

But, your good job of parenting doesn't excuse this guy's bad job of preaching.

I gave specific examples of what was wrong with what Mr. Sanderson did. I stand by my assertions. Remember...this guy's outburst took place to instruct the men in the church how to respond if their wife or kids asked, "Why are we getting rid of the TV?"

If one of my leaders responded like that to their wife or kid, I would remove them from leadership, until they got help with their anger issues.

we've gone without TV for long periods as well. What has always amazed me is the fact that when we turn it back on we are more sensitized to all the garbage we had gotten used to before. Just letting a little in at a time, you don't notice it very much.

Shiloh, how many times did you threaten you wife and kids by breaking something in the house over asking a question? I bet you never have.

A friend of mine's ex-husband used to punch the walls, throw things and generally be destructive as a means of controlling my friend and her daughter. It was a threat: "Do things my way or I'll do worse to you". That is, and was, ABUSE!

While you may agree with sanderson on the issue of TV, I doubt you condone abuse and his destruction of the set just because his wife or kids asked a question was/is abusive.

I was raised in just such a home. (only it was my mother who was controlling and dad just let her get by with it) Sanderson may not end up losing his family because of this kind of abusiveness, but in all likelyhood he will. My parents lost their son over it and very nearly lost me as well. Abuse is a serious issue in this entire conversation.

When I was commercial fishing, I would go months at a time without running water, electricity, TV, radio, or anything else we take for granted every day. Yet, I thoroughly enjoy electricity, running water, and most especially indoor plumbing.

A friend of mine and I were raised basically the same way, by God fearing parents, except her parents did ban TV, non-Christian radio, etc. (Although her father was never violent in a Wendy O. Williams type of way to smash the TV.) Today, she's living in a nudist colony. I can tell you that my rebelliousness when I was younger did not come from TV, but it came from being curious about the things that other people were doing. Perhaps Sanderson should isolate his family from all other people.

BTW, did anyone see the movie "The Village"?
