Actually, I did some research, and it meant what we think of as "ghost" even back in the 17th century. So it is still a mystery to me why the KJV translators went with "Holy Ghost."

And why they chose to call the Holy Spirit as IT 4 times?

Ghost meant back in 1611 what Spirit does to us today, and we should always translate Him as Spirit, as Ghost connotes dead people and casper to us today

I agree that today it is far more accurate to translate it as "Spirit." It's like so many words in the KJV, where "prevent" means "go before," "carriages" means "equipment," and so on.

The kjv also had the Holy Ghost as 'he that letteth " as stating as He that prevents
