MP pointed out things he's seen in his lifetime--all of them "in the long ago past" (ha!! makes me sound younger than you and I bet I'm not!!). And webdog, I am thankful for you that you have NOT seen these things in your lifetime. And I absolutely understand why YOU don't want to have to pay the price for things you don't do (hold back an entire generation of black Americans). I don't do those things either, and I don't like being lumped into that ugly "racist whitey" category that Rev. Wright would probably throw me in because he IS a racist black man (or at least the comments he's made that have been publicized are racist comments).
BUT, I'll point out in this thread what I've said in others on this subject--racism IS alive and well and living in America NOW. Be glad if you don't see it. But I DO see it--daily.
I have been TOLD by several people that they will not vote for Barack Obama BECAUSE HE'S A BLACK MAN. Wouldn't matter WHAT qualifications he had--he's black and that's all that matters to them.
I have been instructed by a supervisor to NOT send black sales people to him because he WILL NOT shake their hands and he WILL NOT buy from them.
I know people who believe that black people are not much better than animals; that their morals --regardless of whether they are professing Christians--are suspect in ALL cases. They assume that they have no control over their physical urges.
I am not proud that I know people who believe this. But I can't change THEIR attitudes and beliefs any more than Obama can change Rev. Wright's. My point is that
racism exists right now. This sad fact STILL permeates society. It is a direct descendant of slavery--some white people still believe that they are superior to ALL black people. I know these people, it's not just a "liberal mindset" and talking points. I am far from being a liberal, politically or socially. I don't think the answer is to turn to reverse racism and punish folks like you and me who never owned a slave (I come from a long line of poor, poor white folks and Cherokee Indian heritage). I agree that everyone should take responsibility for their own lives...I also know that if all you've ever known or seen in your lifetime is that you are somehow a second-class human being, then you don't think yourself
capable of controlling your own life.
I don't know what the solutions are, but I KNOW the solutions to America's racial woes won't come if everyone doesn't see that there IS a problem. And I believe that the Christian community should lead the way in helping face the situation and resolve the problem. :saint:
