The Myth of White Privilege

Something must be wrong. My finances are in shambles; mainstream newspapers won't publish my pieces; and, no matter how much I try to convince Fox News that they need male eye candy as well, they just won't give me a show. Then I gaze into the mirror at my alabaster complexion and say, "What's wrong with this picture? I'll have to address this at the next White People's Meeting."

Of course, it isn't really true that all we Caucasians get together in a big conference hall somewhere and, rubbing our hands together with devilish glee, conspire as to how we're gonna get ourselves some'a that there white privilege. Yet you wouldn't know it listening to egghead academics, media mouths, and uncivil rights agitators.

Put "white privilege" into a search engine and no small number of results will be for ".edu" URLs, which means that our mental institutions of higher learning are busy teaching "critical race theory" and ideas such as "Whites are taught not to recognize white privilege" and that, as this University of Dayton site informs, white persons have a "special freedom or immunity from some [liabilities or burdens] to which non-white persons are subject[.]" There is also something called "The White Privilege Conference" and a website devoted to it (I actually had to log on to make sure it wasn't a spoof site, but truth is stranger -- and stupider -- than fiction). And American Thinker recently wrote about an event called "Erasing White Privilege," during which whites sat around in a room confessing their collective oppressor sins while "people of color" discharged rage, "yelling at them" and "preaching." Ain't Obama's post-racial America grand?

Of course, I don't imagine there are many plumbers, supermarket workers, or forklift operators at such meetings -- and not just because they actually have to work. It's also because they know something:

White privilege is a myth.

“White Privilege”: Myths and Facts

What, then, do today’s leftists mean by “white privilege,” and what do they hope to accomplish by campaigning against it? “White privilege” in the modern leftist sense means essentially four things:

It means (or implies) that non-leftists who happen to be “white” should mute their non-leftist cultural and political views. As satirist Julie Borowski remarks in discussing the phrase “check your privilege”: “We all know what that really means: Shut up.” In this respect, the left’s campaign against “white privilege” is part and parcel of its broader strategy of smearing and bullying its opponents.

It means that individuals are to be judged, not by their words, deeds, actions, and character, but by their skin color and by their adherence to leftist narratives regarding racism (e.g., see my recent blog post.) In this respect, the left’s campaign against “white privilege” is patently racist.

It means that “white” people should perpetually feel guilty about their skin color and self-sacrificially work to serve the allegedly non-privileged. In this respect, the left’s campaign against “white privilege” is a mixture of the morality of self-sacrifice and the atrocity of racism.

It also means that, if there is any disparity in income or wealth between any “white” person (however defined) and any “person of color”—whatever the cause and regardless of context—government should work toward eliminating the disparity by forcibly redistributing wealth and imposing regulations. In this respect, the left’s campaign against “white privilege” is part of its broader egalitarian and statist aims.

“White Privilege”: Myths and Facts

To further see why the left’s campaign against “white privilege” is (in the respects mentioned) absurd, racist, and immoral, consider some additional facts:

In America today, people’s success or lack thereof has (for the most part) nothing to do with the color of their skin. All one need do is glance at a newspaper or a television to see that highly successful people as well as miserable failures come in every skin tone. To succeed, what a rational person fundamentally needs is freedom—specifically, freedom to live his own life by his own judgment—and today, all Americans have or lack such freedom to the same extent.

Who counts as a “white” person, and what counts as “privilege,” are largely arbitrary. As Tal Fortgang eloquently writes, it’s absurd to claim that descendents of Jews who escaped Hitler’s holocaust somehow led a “privileged” life. Irish and Asian immigrants, among others, suffered under bigoted laws and faced widespread prejudices. Yet, as Eugene Volokh points out, Asians now are often regarded as “white” for political purposes. I know adopted “white” children who were abused so badly by their birth parents that they will carry the physical and emotional scars for life; is this their “privilege”?

Insofar as some minority neighborhoods are relatively impoverished and crime-ridden, that is not because of the skin color of the residents (or nonresidents). Rather, such conditions are, as I’ve written elsewhere, the “result of cultural breakdowns exacerbated by bad government policies.”

Numerous government policies, even if not overtly racist, disproportionately harm minorities. Such policies include prohibitions on drugs, which drive black-market crime; minimum wage and union laws, which cause unemployment; government schools, which fail to educate children properly (if at all); licensing laws, which throttle competition and preclude people from starting their own businesses; and welfare programs, which foster dependence on the state.

What no one should do is feel guilty about the color of his skin, or judge another person by the color of his skin. Each individual deserves to be judged, not by the color of his skin, but by his actions and by the “content of his character.” It is high time for all Americans to embrace these truths.

The Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy are myths.

White privilege has given Whites 13 times more wealth than Blacks and 10 times more wealth than Hispanics in this country.

White privilege has the median black household wealth at $11,000 and the Hispanic household at $13,700 while it went up, even during the recession, for white household to $142,000.

When economists begin their estimates at $1 trillion for how much 200 years of unpaid slave labor has privileged white slave owners and their descendants, it's quickly seen why Whites try to deny their privilege.

When Jim Crow reserved the best jobs and schools and neighborhoods and hospitals and eating facilities and transportation and access to everything for Whites, it would take a nutt to believe there was not white privilege.

When the New Deal was designed to make Whites wealthier and to keep Blacks poor, the myth talk gets busted in the face of reality.

And let's not forget the Wagner Act and how it kept Blacks out of the higher paying jobs that thrust millions upon millions of Whites into the Middle Class.

Oh and let's not forget the redlining of the home loans from the 1930s to the 1960s in which over 98% of federally backed home loans went to Whites.

Family wealth accumulation is a beast and skews everything towards Whites.

So when one looks at the Forbes 400 in the US and just about every face n that list is White, it further shows that the attempt to make myth out of white privilege if even just dealing with wealth is nothing but a display of more white privilege.

But be careful. That mythological white privilege doesn't like it when folks challenge the meritocracy.

A myth. Nothing more.

The purpose of which is purely to advance the leftist agenda.

The White Privilege Myth

While examining an article on www.alternet.org, I happened across a recurring theme in American politics: Mitt Romney was supported by white voters despite his mediocrity, and only because Barack Obama was (and continues to be) black, despite his exceptional nature.

I know the idea of white privilege, the bastard child of critical race theory, keeps gaining ground as time goes on, and it will be perpetuated as long as the media and their Democrat allies can sustain the narrative. The President seems to have set his “laser-like focus” on its preservation throughout his administration.

SNIP

The truth is it ain’t out there. LPSDs (Liberals, Progressives, Socialists, Democrats) are falling more and more on the white privilege sword, and the continued cries of racism, for two very simple reasons.

First, and this is most important: Barack Obama is a terrible President, terrible Executive, and terrible Commander-in-Chief. It must be the white half of him that sucks at his job, right? Remember the cultural meme that was “we are better off than we were four years ago”? A more accurate phrasing, although far less catchy, would have been, “we are better off than we were four years ago, unless you are black”.

Oh sure, they play into the whole “white privilege” idea by talking about how black unemployment is above 10% for the better part of 50 years, but they fail to mention that, according to their own graph, President Obama has not had a better month of black unemployment than George W. Bush.

From now on, cutting government spending equals white privilege.

Second, President Obama has not let all of this economic misery go to his head. He seems to be taking Rush Limbaugh’s advice of choosing not to participate in a recession. Must be nice to have that privilege. Of course, every President has been given the privileges President Obama enjoys, and Bush took more vacations, so why do we even worry about what he does in his spare time? You have to admit, it’s a brilliant governing strategy: walk into the Oval Office and wonder aloud why the hell the country is not fixed yet, blame the Republicans in Congress, and hit the links.

President Obama is simultaneously a walking refutation of white privilege and a walking testimony to government’s excess in a time of scarcity for the rest of us. This is what “shared sacrifice” looks like, folks.

According to the census bureau U.S. Median income in 2011 was $50,502. For whites it was $55,412.

I question the numbers you provided for blacks and Hispanics as well.

For blacks it was $32,229; Hispanics it was $38,624.

Still, that's a lot of disparity.

I agree. That's just income though. I think actual wealth shows the real picture of how privilege stacks the deck because it is more cumulative.

Yeah, those #'s have nothing to do with the fact that blacks and hispanics are much more apt to involve themselves in gang and drug subculture. Probably also has nothing to do with the fact that blacks and hispanics are much less likely to take their education seriously. Yeah, those things don't matter here.

You guys trumpet MLK, but then constantly worry about the color of someone's skin. Why don't you look at the content of their character and you will see that by percentage the content of black's character is much more lacking than those of whites.

You mean like those numbers probably have nothing to do with predatory practices by Whites to historically keep Blacks and Hispanics from establishing the same type wealth that they have?

White privilege has got you placing a $130K net wealth disparity on gangs and a drug subculture?
NsphD.gif

That's just silly.

Again, nothing but white privileged foolishness. I can hardly believe that something like that would even come from your fingertips.

Never mind the disparity in schools in the Black and Hispanic neighborhoods. Never mind dollars being taken out of those schools and placed in other schools. Never mind that most jobs are gotten from insider connections that favor the majority since they are the ones who own everything and are making most of the hiring decisions.

But yeah, let's blame it on them not taking their education seriously. Pure foolishness.

You guys trumpet MLK, but then constantly worry about the color of someone's skin.

You guys trumpet Ronald Reagan but constantly worry about the color of someone's skin even though you don't like to admit it.

Why don't you look at the content of their character and you will see that by percentage the content of black's character is much more lacking than those of whites.

Pure white privileged foolishness.

If every single black person in the US immediately divorced themselves from the drug and gang culture and every single black person immediately took their education seriously, we'd see a miraculous reduction in every single thing you complain about (cops hating on black people, lower wages for black people, black being not getting respect). The fact of the matter is no one is forcing black people to be in gangs (except themselves) and no one is forcing black people to do/sell drugs (except themselves). No one is forcing blacks to devalue education (except themselves).

Every single negative connotation about blacks in brought on by their own actions.

Call it white privilege, or foolishness, or whatever you want. It's the cold hard truth and your (black, liberal, foolish - you choose) mind just can't wrap around it, because:

1) You are black and feel entitled. (or)
2) You are white, liberal, and feel guilty for something that didn't happen in our lifetime. (or)
3) You are a troll.

I have one word for you.

Education.

Check the drop out rates. You'll find the reason for the "disparity".

"White privilege is a myth...promulgated by the left to keep blacks in line.

Dr. Ben Carson is a perfect example of what people can do when they devote themselves to bettering their lives. The man Charles Payne on Fox tells of his upbringing in NYC and how as a teen ager he carried a briefcase to school because he wanted to succeed in business. And he did!. And going back in history we read:

History of Tuskegee University

Welcome to Tuskegee University- "the pride of the swift, growing south." Founded in a one room shanty, near Butler Chapel AME Zion Church, thirty adults represented the first class - Dr. Booker T. Washington the first teacher. The founding date was July 4, 1881, authorized by House Bill 165.

We should give credit to George Campbell, a former slave owner, and Lewis Adams, a former slave, tinsmith and community leader, for their roles in the founding of the University. Adams had not had a day of formal education but could read and write. In addition to being a tinsmith, he was also a shoemaker and harness-maker. And he could well have been experienced in other trades. W. F. Foster was a candidate for re-election to the Alabama Senate and approached Lewis Adams about the support of African-Americans in Macon County.

What would Adams want, Foster asked, in exchange for his (Adams) securing the black vote for him (Foster). Adams could well have asked for money, secured the support of blacks voters and life would have gone on as usual. But he didn’t. Instead, Adams told Foster he wanted an educational institution - a school - for his people. Col. Foster carried out his promise and with the assistance of his colleague in the House of Representatives, Arthur L. Brooks, legislation was passed for the establishment of a "Negro Normal School in Tuskegee."

//snip//

Dedicated in 1922, the Booker T. Washington Monument, called "Lifting the Veil," stands at the center of campus. The inscription at its base reads, "He lifted the veil of ignorance from his people and pointed the way to progress through education and industry." For Tuskegee , the process of unveiling is continuous and lifelong.
