Question for you @Rippon2 . How much of this comes down to individual preference? My daily reader is the NASB. When I do serious study I look at the Greek and various English translations. But in the morning and evening, when I read the Word for personal devotions, the NASB is in my hand. I understand you are a fan of the NIV. Some are fans of the KJV, NKJV, or the ESV. I do not participate in many of the Translation War threads because they do not interest me. So again, how much of this is all about individual preference?

The ESV has a great deal of awkward and unnatural English. In contrast the NIV is plainer. It's not a matter of the ESV being more faithful to the originals because its English is contorted, it's just that the revisers did not do a thorough job. The ESV needs some competent English stylists. Currently, it's like going through the underbrush. Many passages could be rendered in straightforward English. The same thing applies to the NKJV. The NASB is a bit better.

Please do not misunderstand me. I understand your right to compare and contrast Bible versions. That is fine. I guess this is one area that has always puzzled me. I have my reasons for preferring the NASB to any other English translation. But hey, I do not want to derail your thread so I will leave you to it. Peace.

if you get though too much into a functional translation, it can tend to lose the intended original meaning to the reader!

One element should not be sacrificed for the other. It's a balancing act. But if a translation has too much biblish in it, readability is compromised. The meaning should be transferred as much as possible; the form is secondary.

The esv is a more conservation translation then the Niv 2011, correct? As both seek to get to good readability and accuracy!

How do you define conservative? Does the NIV use more inclusive language than the ESV? Yes. Does that alone mean that the ESV is more conservative than the NIV? No.

The ESV fails with respect to readability as I have demonstrated on a plethora of threads. When it comes to accuracy opinions may vary, but I think the NIV stands up well to scrutiny on that matter.
