The Obama re-election myth

Media propaganda aside, the president is in trouble

The Obama campaign machine is firing up, and its most important fuel is the media. For the millions of Americans who get their news from the networks, most cable programs or the average kneejerk liberal newspaper, it’s a foregone conclusion that President Obama will get a second term. This is supposedly because the economy is rebounding and Mitt Romney is a flawed candidate. None of these pro-Barack assumptions are true.

Exhibit A in the People v. Barack H. Obama is the Rasmussen Reports poll that measures what percentage of voters believe America is on the right track versus those who fear we are heading in the wrong direction. According to data released a week ago, 65 percent of Americans say the nation is going the wrong way. A mere 27 percent think the country under Mr. Obama is going the right way. Those are devastating numbers for an incumbent.

An interesting opinion piece and it is just that ... an opinion.

After all the fellow has to write something to meet his deadline.

It will be at least a 40-state win for Romney. To say nothing of the other legislative seats that will go G.O.P. in this election. This country is taking a Babe Ruth size swing republican.

Probably due to the final straw of the rash of current scandals which in the public perception is the administration's fault.

This is an op-ed piece, with which I really don't agree. I haven't really seen this in the mass media and I think most people (both left and right) believe that it will be a close election - even at the electoral vote level. Let's not forget that while the President beat Senator McCain convincingly in the electoral college in 2008, the true vote was relatively close -- 53% to 47% I think. I heard a good debate a few weeks ago by Karl Rove and Robert Gibbs and they both believe that the election will be extremely close. (I think that is the only thing they agreed upon.)

That being said, from an electoral college perspective, Romney has his work cut out for him more so than the President -- simply due to the math. Assuming that Romney picks up five key states that McCain lost - FL, OH, NC, VA and IN -- and that's a big assumption, he still needs 16 more electoral votes. Where does he get these - what combination from Iowa, Missouri, New Hamphire, Colorado, Wisconsin, Nevada?

If Romney loses Virginia with its 13 votes (which McCain lost by 7 points), he now needs 29 more electoral votes, not just 16. That means at least two more states will have to go his way and that will be tough. Not impossible, but tough.

Lastly, if Romney loses Florida, it is over for him. There's almost no way for him to pick up another 29 electoral votes. And all of this is with the help of the 2010 census which changed the electoral votes to states which are normally red.

As was said in the other thread, we all should make a commitment to give our predictions the day before election day, then meet again after. At least these predictions will not try and guess six months worth of events. Depending on what happens, it could be anywhere from a Romney landslide to an Obama landslide.

I still say Obama would do himself a favor with a different VP.

I have given some thought as to the most likely events to hurt Obama, and IMO it would be gas prices and unemployment going up. What would help him is an opposite trend, signs of an improving economy, or an international crisis.

What would help Romney the most is to find the golden leaves that the angel Macaroni has so he can pay off his campaign debt.

I still am not going to vote for Romney (or Obama), but since Romney clinched the nomination, it has been easier to talk about him in a civil manner. I really do not know why, as he is still the same character as before.

All the above is ignoring the very real possibility that, should the ZERO see his future as losing the election, he will pull some off-the-wall antic to preclude/nullify the elections at the last minute - some crisis (manufactured, of course) that would fit his Chicago upbringing.

That comment seems mean-spirited to me. That aside, Romney doesn't need golden leaves, he is already wealthy, through hard work. Even Santorum is hoping for a little help from Romney to pay off his own campaign debt, haven't you heard? Romney is a businessman. We could do worse (and we have been for the past 3+ years) than having a businessman at the helm who knows how to turn the economy around for the (used to be) largest economy in the world. Did you know Romney, when he was Governor of Massachusetts, didn't even take a salary during his term?

Did you know re: the Olympics (per Internet):

"When he took the job, Romney said he would accept the offered salary of $250,000 a year only if the Olympics made a profit. When it did, he turned his salary over to charity. In addition, he contributed $1 million to the games."

I can all but guarantee you Gov. Romney, if President, and his wife will not be taking lavish excursions (vacations) all over the world and hopping around in AF1 at taxpayer expense. If there ever was a contrast, just look at this video:

Whatever his religous beliefs, I believe Mitt Romney to be a good soul and honorable. He certainly has dignity and is Presidential. If ever this country needs you to not be throwing votes away on a 3rd party candidate who has no chance of winning, your country needs you now to defeat the socialist/pro-islamic narcissist who sits (when he isn't campaigning, golfing, or on vacation or late night shows at taxpayer expense) at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Even you don't actually believe this, do you?

I do. I put nothing past this man to hold onto power....Nothing. Declare Martial Law, and postpone the election. It was even suggested by several Democrats - See here with link to original sources:

There is a growing concern among a lot of people that this could be what is in the works. I would like to believe Republicans would never let this happen, but after the John McCain fiasco and the 2008 election stolen....

I agree. However its not too likely as he certainly must know that this would probably result in a less than peaceful reaction from those who are clinging to their guns and bibles in all the 57 states.

There are many checks and balances to not allow that situation. Richard Nixon came as close as anyone to us the power of the Presidency for his own gain. The Supreme Court and Congress put a stop to it.

Absolutely and thank the Lord for the foresight of the founding fathers.

Though hard to imagine, let's hope Romney doesn't make things worse.

Enlighten me please. How can the Supreme Court and Congress stop him? Doesn't an Executive Order declaring Martial Law nullify checks and balances? Besides, the checks and balances haven't worked with regard to the way he has circumvented Congress through the agencies and made new regulations. No one has stopped him. No one has stopped him from the wild spending on vacations and salaries and staffs for the czars. (He has appointed more czars than all of Russian history, BTW.) No one has stopped him from involving our military in Libya. I am not holding my breath for the supremes to stop obamacare, either. In theory, you are correct, we do have a system of checks and balances, but we have never had an occupier in the oval office like this one. I am not being facetious, I would really like to know......

I know what you mean. He is sounding an awful lot like a conservative right now, but his record is his record.

I have a different definition of being mean spirited. Mean spirited is mocking people who refuse to vote for someone who is pro abortion, pro gay rights, and a member of a cult who does not believe Jesus Christ is God, and that God the Father recreates Himself at periodic intervals.

Well, a Christian voting for Romney needs to be enlightened. There is no power to allow a President to nullify the power of the Supreme Court, or the Congress. You seem to have a big problem with equating people who vote their conscience as voting for Obama. Nothing could be further from the truth. What is the price of a soul? Being a Republican apologist?

Oh and by the way, Romney care was fashioned years before Obama care. When Romney was running for Senate against Ted Kennedy, they tried to out abortion each other in the debate. You said he is a "decent and honorable" man. How do you come to that conclusion? Is it his u-turn on right to life, pro gay rights, gun control, or government run health insurance?

If you think a Supreme Court or Congress cannot stop an imperial Presidency, read the history of Nixon's last two months in office.
