The Soul

Jim1999

Can someone define the relationship of the soul, the brain and the body to me. What is the soul? Is the soul related to life, or is the soul connected to the brain? Describe the soul as you would the heart, the brain, the body etc.

Cheers,

Jim

I think it depends on what one means by the soul. In some cases, it refers to emotions. In other cases, it is the same as spirit.

I like to define man as material and immaterial. The material part is the body, and the immaterial part is the spirit (or soul or soul/spirit) and mind. I think the Lord made us as a unity and we can't really separate the immaterial part at all; I think it is unified.

I tell my kids that their souls are the thing inside of them that makes them them. When someone dies, their body is left and what is gone is their soul. Their memories, their thoughts, their relationships, etc. are all part of their soul.

A "soul" is a "person". The body is what confines the soul here on earth. When the body dies, the soul (for the Christian) returns to God who created it at conception. YOU are a SOUL Jim :thumbsup:

If you read Leviticus you will find that soul is synomynous with pronouns such as he or him throughout scripture.

i.e. Lev 5:15If a soul commit a trespass, and sin through ignorance, in the holy things of the LORD; then he shall bring for his trespass unto the LORD a ram without blemish out of the flocks, with thy estimation by shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering:

Also, In the beginning God created man as a living soul that was not to die. Death entered through sin. If sin had not entered then man would have remained in the body eternally.

But since sin had entered and death to the body through the sin of Adam, God must fashion for us a new body which we will all receive and live happly everafter in.

So in the eternal view, there will be no seperation between spirit and body. Every person will be a living soul having an eternal, immortal body.

Can you show me scripture that says the soul,,,a separate entity to the body and brain, was created at conception?

How do we respond to the gospel? Does our soul speak or is it a brain decision?

Cheers,

Jim

Have to disagree. Re your other post: We are not a soul, but a body/soul/mind unity. Sometimes the word "soul" does refer to a life, but this does not mean we are soul beings. We are human beings, which means we are embodied, unlike the angels, who are spirit beings.

Also, God will not fashion a new body but resurrect and glorify our old body. It will be changed yet still be our body. Jesus was the example of this resurrection.

Jim; Can you show me scripture that says the soul,,,a separate entity to the body and brain, was created at conception?

The soul and body can only be seperated by God. Scripture declares the body and soul as one, a "living soul" the moment any sign of life appeared.

In the beggining, God created the body and soul to be as one eternally, to never be seperated. The "living soul" being a "person" in all of it's substance (body, brain, heart, arms, legs, etc, etc and soul/spirit). "Man became a living soul".

Gen 2:7And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Q) Did man become a "living soul" the moment man became alive? Yes.

Q) At what moment does a person become alive today? Is the person dead in the womb until his lungs draw air apart from his mother? Of course not. The person is concieved (a living soul) at the moment he becomes a human life. Maturity does not a living soul make. God creates the living soul at the moment of life itself, just as we have the scripture as our example.

Scripture shows us that a "living soul" begins the moment the person becomes alive.

Do you have scripture that states anything different?

Both.

Rom 10:10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Ro 10:17).

You need a brain to hear and to confess.

Have you ever seen a body from the grave that has been dead for 6 months? Nothing but bones. If cremated, the body is consumed and later the bones to ashes and disposed in various ways. In resurrection, the scriptures talk of a new body. IN heaven we neither are married nor given in marriage. In plain English, sexless in gender.

So, in death we are left without the old body,,,,,brains, heart, other organs, but the soul passes on to eternity. This makes the soul a separate entity to our physical structure. Is the soul then speaking through our natural man in life?

There are three theories on the origin of the soul postulated in some theologies: (a) Preexistence; the soul preexists the birth of man in the mind of God; (b) Creation theory; The soul of each human is joined to the body and created by God at conception, at birth, or at some time inbetween these two;
(c)Traducian theory; (Augustine) begins in Adam and propagated by natural generation (with attribution to A. H. Strong, Systematic Theology)

Jim

I have a question Jim.

When did man become a "living soul"?

I agree with you...I don't have the answers either. My good buddy Samuel ( a jew) told me Jews are taught that the body doesn't receive the soul until about 30 days after being physicaly born.

Its your spirit. I don't know; I like watchman nee's perspective on the whole matter. Its what ties us to eternity. Plato and Socrates consider matter to be forms of the spiritual realm. CS Lewis believed that the Spiritual world was more substantial or substantive than the Material world. that in comparison the material world is a wisp of smoke in comparison and you get his meaning when you see the space between the nucleus of an Atom and its electrons or between atoms. So maybe your question is better asked what relationship does the body have with the soul? What part of the soul does the body participate in. Also man didn't become a living being until God breathed life (soul?) into him. Just some thoughts.

Adam became a living soul when God breathed life into him. I'll take that to mean we bcome a soul when we are a life. Since God knew us in the womb, we have life then and are a soul. At what instant that occurs medically I can not say. Is it when the sperm and egg unite, or when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterus (sp)? I am not sure although I tend to lean towards then latter. In either case it is before birth and before 30 days. There is NO biblical support for such a thought(30 days).

Let me ask this. 1 Th 5:23 references soul, spirit and body. If the body is the physical part of man and the soul is the invisible part of man, what is the spirit?
(1Th 5:23) And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 4:12 references soul and spirit as 2 distinct entities. I think all other references to soul and spirit could apply to distinct ways of referencing the same entity.
(Heb 4:12) For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Very strange teaching indeed!

God has declared the life is in the blood (Lev 17). Can a soul remain in a lifeless body? Does not the death of the body release the soul?

As long as the heart continues to pump the blood keeping the body alive then the soul remains. Correct?

Is soul and spirit synomynous? Stephen asked God to receive his spirit. Did Stephen's soul go somewhere else or cease to exist?

Strong's states that the soul (5590) is different than the spirit (4152).

Does the psuche (soul) die with the body until the ressurrection, while the pneuma (spirit) lives on eternally either in heaven or hell?

Are we not "body, soul and spirit"?

Body=the senses

Soul=the life, animation.

Spirit=the immortal, eternal, rational existence.

In the ressurrection then, the spirit is once again a living soul. No?
