We all know you want to burn down all the libraries. Might as well not try to deny it

    This is childish.

I read Joel Berk, John Owen's, Tim Keller, John Macarthur, David Wells, etc.

But I will NEVER declare that a Christian who has not is deficient.

Our sufficiency is Christ and the measure of our faith is God,'s Word.

That is where you and your gang go. And you are wrong.

Yes. I am known to burn down the occasional library because...you know..we shouldn't be reading books. :Laugh

I love how Spurgeon applied Scripture. Read "Choice Portions" if you get a chance (that's one of my favorite sermons).

If you don't like it then....well....you may not be a Baptist :Tongue .

    Do not twist my words.
I do not like the slimy way you do that.
I do not think I should have to go back and show how you twist it.
I said something along the line of a if a Baptist was not willing to read and learn from men like Owen or Ferguson it is defective.
It is not mandatory but to say they are not God given teachers has been shown to be an absurdity.

And yet, reading the Bible on your own has led you to believe “many people are saved never having heard the gospel”. An egregious error.

You read what others have written and compare it to scripture. Many of these folks have been gifted by God with wise discernment of scripture.

The great value of books is you don’t have to work out the same errors in every generation. Throughout history, we see the same errors over and over concerning, primarily, the person and work of Jesus.

All those claiming reformed believers just follow the teachings of men and not the Bible are simply ignorant of the truth.

In my experience, reformed believers are the most committed to understanding scripture in context.

That is readily seen on this board where many posting in this thread make outrageous accusations against reformed believers and rarely engage in serious discussions of scripture.

    peace to you

This is a false accusation. I said that John Owen's, John John Wesley, Dwight Moody, etc were given by God as teachers.

This is what you said, and then what you defended:

I appreciate you trying to back track, it was a false teaching you posted. But don't pretend I twisted it or changed it.

    Some want to rewrite history.
Reformed teaching is alive and well.
There are people called holocaust deniers who say it never happened.
Some deny Spurgeon was a Calvinist or that non Baptist theologians should not be read.

You denied they were useful you said they were only for their people in there time.
You have denied they were God given teachers.
    Clarify for us....
Does God give teachers at all. I said He did quoting Eph4.

I never denied they were useful! I even said I found Owen's very useful.

What do you do...just sit around trying to falsely accuse the breathen??!!!!

Dude....I am human with enough flaws you don't need to go to the trouble to invent false accusations to insult me.

And yes, God equips the church with pastors and teachers.

No, God did not give you those teachers (all you have are their writings).

Yes, Christians can learn from John Owen, Karl Barth, C.S. Lewis and John Wesley.

No, Christians are not defficient if they have not read those men's writings.

Christians should read as much as they are able. 'In the multitude of counsellors there is safety.'
Reading older books is very valuable (cf. Jeremiah 6:16). John Owen is hard reading, but there are some excellent abridgments. To me he is, along with Jonathan Edwards, the greatest of all theologians. But of course, all Christian books have to be measured against the plumb line of the Bible.

Banner of Truth has published some of Owen's later sermons in their 'Puritan Paperback' series as Searching our hearts in difficult times. We have such times upon us right now and Owen's insights are as up-to-date as tomorrows newspapers with a lot more truth in them. The book was very reasonably priced and of such importance that I bought a copy for each of our church officers.

I'll give it a read when I have time. I prefer to read a book and watch the movie afterwards (the other way around colors my perception of the characters).

Counselors. Teachers. NOT claiming Christians who have not read certain authors are deficient in thinking!

    You should know better, Martin.

Ironically we have read much of the same writings.

Every respected Bible teacher advocates a healthy diet of reading teachers and theologians from the past to supplement our Bible reading.
Never saw any respected theologian to compare them to reading the book of Mormon.

Just because a Baptist is unwilling to read non-Baptist authors does not mean he or she has a deficiency.

Let me ask you - God gave Harold Bender as a teacher. What do you think of his books. Have you read enough of them so you are not defficient in your thinking?

What about John Wesley? God gave him as a teacher. Have you read his books?
