More on the war on the poor.............

The Republicans are waging war on the poor in America. And just like the war on women, they want to pretend it doesn`t exist.

But it's real. And millions of the most vulnerable Americans are being targeted.

ric Cantor is complaining about poor Americans who don't pay income tax. But he leaves out all the tax that they do pay. The working poor have payroll taxes. Some pay about seven percent of their wages to Social Security and Medicare taxes. In every state except Vermont, the poor pay a higher percentage on state and local taxes. There are other taxes like sales taxes, property taxes and gas tax. But Eric Cantor still says taxes should go up on these Americans opposed to the super rich.

This war is not new. It has been going on for years. But it really stands out this week. In a span of a few days, Republicans chose to protect the rich by voting down the Buffett Rule in the Senate. Now, they are attacking the most vulnerable. It`s no surprise the Republicans have chosen this man as their standard bearer.

Romney tried to say he misspoke when he made that comment in February. But his policies prove, well, he was telling the truth. His economic plans puts money in the back pockets of the wealthiest Americans while raising taxes on people making less than $30,000 a year. Romney says he's 100 percent supportive of Congress and Paul Ryan`s budget plan.

Yes the evil Republicans hate the poor. :BangHead::BangHead:Crabby you need to quit watching MSNBC it will poison your mind. Please admit both Rs and Ds both sensationalize anything to make the other side look terrible. It is politics, don't take everything to read or see as the gospel truth. Except for the Bible, lol.

Social Security and Medicare are NOT income taxes.

Also known as "payroll taxes".

And do not pay for the cost of running the federal government.

Just another disingenious angle to divide the nation by economic status.

IOW More class warfare.

What's funny is that Obama has said we all have to have some "skin in the game", but just about half the tax filers in this country have none. And he has made no effort at all to change that. Instead he tries to get more "skin" from the people that are already being skinned and still none from the other half.

It's all about buying votes.

Democrats are pathological liars and incapable of the truth.

I guess all those who hate the rich can now move to France where they are going to tax them at a 75% rate. Now all will be equal and fair. :1_grouphug: Can't just all get along?

Anyone with any money in France is taking their money across the channel.

And if the entitlement crowd in Europe continues to bankrupt their nations, anyone with any money there will leave the continent.

The real war that actually exists is the war the Democrats are waging on the unborn children and the elderly. Obamacare is the worst thing for our senior citizens. They will be refused any care other than comfort care simply because of their age.

I will interject here - Social Security has been robbed (to the tune of trillions of dollars and in its place were put gov IOUs) to balance previous budgets, pay for wars, etc. When SS was moved to the general fund, it was robbed by both Dems and Republicans and administrations from both parties. SS was never intended to go for anything other than SS. It has been paid for by employee deductions and employer contributions ever since its inception and was never intended to be spent on anything else. Now the question begged to be asked is, are the IOUs left in the trust fund any good, when our national debt is in the trillions. This is why SS is said to go bankrupt, not because the funds have never been there, but because it has been robbed - the ultimate Ponzi scheme on American workers.

As far as Medicare - Obama took 500 billion (that's a b) from Medicare to "pay" for Obamacare.

While Dems show an ad with a Paul Ryan lookalike shoving grandma in a wheelchair over a cliff, the truth is that Obama stole the 500 billion from Medicare. So, who cares more about SS and Medicare? I say a pox on both parties - they both have pilfered and played around with Medicare and SS funds, spending this money (as well as our tax dollars) like drunken sailors and it isn't even THEIR money, all the while pointing fingers at each other. We need to get rid of the whole lot of them and start over, IMHO.

It is not the Democrats who want to cut funding to programs such as Meals on Wheels that help the most needy of the elderly.

The elderly already are restricted in choice as they have to participate in Medicare. Must point on your part there.

If all remains as it is you will have to join Medicare when you become 65 whether you want to or not.

Meals on wheels or Medicare? Which is the bigger program impacting the most elderly?

And if you slowed down and read what others are posting - LadyEagle just pointed out that it is Obama that cut Medicare - not Republicans.

BTW there are many other food assistance programs for the needy elderly - so why is Meals on Wheels such a sacred cow for you

There is no Meals on Wheels program in my town.

There is a similar church based program that works really well, totally funded by donations.

Social Security and Medicare are NOT income taxes.

considering the fact that they are income based, levied by the government, dispersed to pay for government programs. Seems like an income tax to me. Especially since most of us will not benefit from it.

I do not know what town you live in, but Meals on Wheels operates in many cities and towns. That a church operates a similar program is good, it is wonderful.

By the way, Meals on Wheels is helped greatly by volunteers. Many deliver the food to the elderly at their own expense.

Whether or not it is in your town is not the question. Are you in favor of cutting funding to a program that helps the elderly most in need in our country?

From the Texas Meals on Wheels web site:
The Meals On Wheels Association of Texas (MOWAT) comprises home-delivered and/or congregate meal programs all over Texas. In just a few short years, MOWAT has made remarkable strides in providing education and networking opportunities to members and advocating on behalf of seniors and adults with disabilities in need of nutritional support.

Texans Feeding Texans, a program to provide $20 million in new funding for home-delivered meals through the Department of Agriculture, is an excellent example of what can be accomplished with the cooperative efforts of our members and the leadership of Texas senators and representatives who understand the importance of what we do.

http://www.mealsonwheelstexas.org/

From the national Meals on Wheels web site:

8.3 million seniors faced the threat of hunger in 2010.
14.85% of seniors, or more than 1 in 7 experienced some form of food insecurity. By comparison, Ziliak et al. (2008) reported that as of 2005, 1 in 9 seniors or 11.4% faced the threat of hunger.

The problem of senior hunger has gotten worse.
From 2001 to 2010, the number of seniors experiencing the threat of hunger has increased by 78%. Since the onset of the recession in 2007 through 2010, the number of seniors threatened by hunger increased by 34%.

Those above the poverty line were most affected.
Out of those seniors who faced the threat of hunger, the majority had incomes one to two times above the federal poverty line.

Income taxes are defined by the IRS Regulations.

They are not income taxes.

Thats the government line. But in reality what are they? Here is a good working definition of income tax
A tax that governments impose on financial income generated by all entities within their jurisdiction. By law, businesses and individuals must file an income tax return every year to determine whether they owe any taxes or are eligible for a tax refund. Income tax is a key source of funds that the government uses to fund its activities and serve the public.

Question. Are social security payments imposed by the government? Are they based on financial income? Are you required to fill out a return indicating your payment amount? Are these funds used to fund government activities and serve the public?

Again a rose by any other name is still a rose.

Thank you. I know its supposed to be a Government adminsitered insurance program but since its inception. The governement has been using these funds to finance other government programs other than for the purpose of insuring those who input their funds into the system. Since the likelihood of my not being able to collect on this "insurance" while watching others who have either not payed anything into the system or very little through certain government initiatives that also create government jobs from my imput. I can no longer distinguish between it (insurance) and an income tax.
