And you decide what is a core tenant, right Johnv? Sorry, bud, believing that God created man is a core tenant. If you can't understand that, then you are beyond help.

I remember reading one time about a person talking to a group of elementary school kids. He asked, "Do you think God understands computers?"

The kids, relating God to their parents & grandparents, replied, "NO!"

Same sort of reasoning here, tho' worded a bit differently. God obviously never knew His word would be read at a time when "SCIENCE" could corroborate/dis-prove His word.

Either that or He wanted to make sure there was a fly in the ointment just to keep men in the dark as to what the truth really was/is!:BangHead:

I'll just take Him at His word, and later He will tell me whether I should have figured that it was all allegory/parable, or non-literal in whatever fashion!

We're not arguing creation/evolution here per se. We're arguing whether it's appropriate to judge the salvation of a person based on whether they agree or disagree with you on the side of the debate. Like I said earlier, it is right and reasonable to engage in discussion and debate as to whether these verses should be taken literally. It is not right or reasonable, however, to judge a person's salvation based on whether they share the same opinion on it. Neither is it appropriate to judge a Christian as being "the worst Christian ever" solely based on their position on Genesis.

Yes, this was originally a post about me being called "the worst Christian ever" by a non-Christian who didn't like me calling evolution a "lie of the devil." Then she proceeded to say that I had called her a liar and keeps insisting on that "fact". I called the devil a liar--so is she saying that she is the devil by saying I called her a liar? Interesting!

Yes, Jon-Marc, in regards to the OP the comment itself directed towards you was uncalled for. Whether a person is a believer or unbeliever, no one should fear respectful and civil debate and discussion.

Everyone knows that you and you alone gets to decide that, just like to you get to decide who is saved or not .

Says you, but you will pardon me if I count your assessment of core tenants as just yours.

That's just fine, then you'll have to count your assessment of other peoples' scriptural views as just yours, if you want to be consistent in your reasoning.

This lady jumped to a conclusion. I know some days the only exercise I get is jumping to conclusions :-(

That's your two cents, and you're entitled to it, but to accuse others of having a problem with scripture based on one's view of genesis, or on one's view of arminianism, or one's view of the tribulation, or millenialism, or any other non-essential topic is categorically out of line. These are nonessentials in scripture, and therefore subject to liberty (that baptist distintive we frequently preach but seldom apply). Victorious said "Black and white is good on the essentials. Grace and pliability on the non-essentials." That is very true, and very important.

I can not accept that the answer to "who do you say that I am?" is a non-essential. And certainly to say that God is not creator of the universe, is saying a lot about "who do you say that I am?!"

I had a liberal Southern Baptist prof in college that tried to tell that the virgin
birth wasn't an essential either. I didn't buy it 20 years ago and I'll still don't.

I'm kind of narrow, I believe that the God the creator of the universe, and God incarnate's virgin birth are both completely essential.

Kinda narrow myself when it comes to this.

I figure that God could have said what He wanted to say, any way He wanted to say it, and I'm just gonna accept what He said, as He said it, as long as there is nothing in the context to point me to take it any other way.

If He was trying (HA!) to make sure the first readers were not overwhelmed by the "science" of His work, and was explaining just so they could understand, all He had to say was, "I created-----" - end. Then continue with "the rest of the story"

Man could then have allegorized forty ways from Sunday, and had no conflict!! :BangHead:

Of course, it IS possible to take God literally in Genesis and NOT come up with young earth creationism.

But that seems to be the "test of the day" regarding who is "in" and who is "out".

Funny you should mention that. I argued that I don't take Song or Solomon literally, because it says Solomon's lover is the most beautiful of all women. Clarly, my wife, and not Solomon's lover, is the most beautiful of all women. I was told that I didn't believe the Bible, and even had my salvation questioned:
