Three quarters of whites don’t have any non-white friends

Are you average?

"All my black friends have a bunch of white friends. And all my white friends have one black friend."

That's the memorable punchline of a Chris Rock bit from 2009 on interracial friendships. And according to some recent number-crunching by Robert Jones of the Public Religion Research Institute, there's a good deal of truth to that statement.

Let's consider the average American white American and the average American black American, and let's say, for simplicity's sake, that each of them have 100 friends. If you were to break down their respective friend networks by race, they would look something like this.

Who really cares?

From a pure numbers standpoint, statistically, it has to be this way.

No other result is possible.

Many white people don't have any friends that are dairy farmers either. What's your point?

I don't have 91 "friends" on facebook!

I know a dairy famer - sits two seats down from me at church - my brother lives on his farm.

I've got lots of acquaintances, associates or people I'm friendly with.

Haven't really considered their race much but thinking about it most are white, some are black, a few more Latino and Asian.

I'd guess that the sample was biased by the location of where people live:
city culture lends more toward a mixed population of friends while suburban or country folk are uniform.

Just curious Padre, just curious. No finger pointing, just curious.

But it does show something of the division in our country. I believe it also shows how segregated our churches are, both white and others. Whether this is intentional or now probably depends on the individual church.

African Americans make up 13% of the population, so it would seem logical that the average white person would know more than just one. It would seem that at the workplace the average American would know more than one person from other races.

So I'm to inventory my friends and their races, to see where I come in on Crabby's "average" scale ? Not going to do it.

Why are liberals so focused on race ?

Stupid thread.

I would not expect the average person in Montana to know many, other than native Americans. How many do you know Bro?

I guess he still can't read.

C.T.Boy, your O/P asks, and I quote, "Are you average", so don't lie, and say your are not pointing fingers.

Stupid thread.

Because they are about to loose big in the next election if things do not change. And of course the DNC operatives that frequent Baptistboard are doing their job as ordered.

Totally off topic again. Please try to discuss the topic. How many non-whites do you know Rev. You should know quite a number of Native Americans.

Are you average? Even I know more than one Native American who lives in Montana.

I'm willing to bet your going to claim to be "above average", and I don't make friends merely to compete with race obsessed liberals in a diversity contest.

You win, by default.

Stupid thread.

This is ridiculous. I have several black friends. But when I lived in Kansas, there was LITERALLY one black family in the county. So all the people who weren't friends with that family had no black friends. That didn't make them racist, which is the obvious implication; or segregationalist, which was outright stated.

Sapper, the article is talking averages, not single locations. Of course in areas like yours there is not as much opportunity to know people of other races as there are in urban areas. No one said they are racist. I happen to live in an area were there are large numbers of people from all races. Thus there is more opportunity to know a variety of people from a variety of races. I would venture to guess that at the senior center I go to daily for exercise that upwards to 30% of the members are non-white.

People are so touchy on this subject.

First, we need to understand "friend". Is it someone I see once a month at work for a few minutes? Or is it someone that lives next door to me and our kids do everything together? Or is it something in-between.

This is not the first thread on this very subject crabby has started. See DNC operatives are trying to control the public message per Obama and they are trying to distract from anything they cannot defend.

Guess you are completely incapable of having a rational discussion.

How many Native Americans do you know Rev.?
