Schumer is putting illegals ahead of Americian Citizens. So here is my comprimise:'
Dreamers (but not their parents) would be given legal permanent residence. There would be NO path to citizenship - unless they return to their home country and "get in line"
But since they would not have citizenship - they would not be able to vote.
One exception - if they enlist in the US military and serve a minimum of five years active duty - then with an honorable discharge- citizenship would be granted.
This would only apply to "Dreamers" who were in the United States prior to 31 Dec 2017
This should make Schumer happy as we will allow the current dreamers to stay.

i like your compromise although a 4 year stint in the military would be OK with me.

For those who for some reason could not serve in the military a program of unpaid community service should be developed.

A final thought - Schumer could never be made happy without an impeachment of President Trump.

Sending the "Dreamers" back to "their" country, where they have never been except for a few months or a year after birth, whose language they don't speak, and customs they don't understand is the problem, not the solution.

"Dreamers" should be given a path to legal/citizenship. To withhold citizenship opportunity (such as military service or being actively enrolled in College) would create an underclass of permanent residents without the ability to gain citizenship.

Even with DACA, becoming a legal, permanent resident is a long and very expensive process, well above the means of the average DACA person.

As has already been mentioned, in order to make DACA work effectively "chain immigration" must be limited to parents, children, or other members of the immediate family (or even done away with completely).

This whole "Schumer Shutdown" is nothing more than the usual radical left's politics of intimidation. "If you don't give me everything I want I will shut down the government and blame it on you."

DACA, and the other issues Schumer was demanding a vote on has absolutely nothing to do with the CR regarding the Senate's already failing to pass a budget.

The only branch of government affected by a shutdown should be the Legislative branch. No Congressman, no staffer, nobody in the Legislative branch should get a paycheck during a shutdown.

If they won't work, they don't get paid.

I'm a professional musician. Since birth I have poured my music into my children. They have inherited music from me. The consequences of my actions are now theirs. Is that wrong? Is that unfair?

Perhaps among the spoiled white Americans who think that everything that their forefathers worked for should come to them automatically because, well, they're just special. This applies to conservatives and liberals; they think that they don't have to do anything to earn a place in society.

Why should they expect to be citizens of my country? I don't expect to be a resident of Park Ave.

Any expectation of so called, "dreamers" is a demand no different from mine. It is a demand that someone foot the bill for their desire.

I actually do have rights to what my forefathers produced, as do all who inherit anything. My country belongs to people who have contributed to it in their lives and deaths in battle. It is as unjust to give it away as it is to give away the money my grandfather left to me.

My father could correctly be referred to as a proto-dreamer. He came to this country while still a child, almost 100 years ago. He never became a citizen, but he worked hard, studied hard, learned to fit into the American societal norm. And earned his place in this society.

He learned a trade. He prospered through good old fashioned hard work. He died a fairly wealthy man. He, literally, lived the American dream.

I have very little patience with either extreme. One one end is "I'm here so you have to take care of me." On the other extreme is the "I got mine (usually through very little effort on your part) but nobody else is entitled to try to do the same."

I am better than no man. Does that give me the right to violate laws? No. If I bring my children to a bank robbery, do they get to keep the money I've stolen? No.

So, deporting a person to a country he has never lived in, with a culture he does not understand, that speaks a language he does not understand, and in which he has no marketable skill set, and will probably be murdered or starve to death as the result, is your idea of "justice."

Have you no mercy? Have you no compassion? Have you no grace in your heart for these modern day stateless nomads?

Let me ask you, if they were all 5 Point Calvinists would you allow them to stay?

The Dreamers are not violating any laws. That is one of the requirements of the Dream Act. Being in this country without authorization is not a crime. It is ENTERING this country without authorization which is a crime. And the children did not commit that crime. There were too young and thus no Mens Rea, no crime.
