Upright or not?

Men are created upright but they have sought out many devices.

Does God literally “not hear” some prayers?

"Not hear" means that God does not give the person praying what he wants, as it is not according to His sovereign will to do so. Now, according to His sovereign will, he may not give His elect what they want either, but it is not because they are reprobate, but because it would not work for their good.

While I respect John Gill, the way you quote it concerns me a little.
(You do know that “John Gill's Bible commentary” is not God-breathed scripture, right?)
Gill was not always the most reliable, IMHO.

I don't believe, fur example, that Michael the Archangel was Jesus Christ. But many of his time did. I think the JW's still do.

The overall conclusion the Preacher makes is that men are made upright but they decide to sin (their sin is not a fault in God).
Point of clarification: Are you disavowing the doctrine of original sin and advocating that men are born, at a minimum, morally neutral?

If not, then how is the preacher 100% correct that all men (mankind) are “made upright”?

No. I am not confirming or disavowing anything about original sin.

Whether the Preacher is 100% is something I am leaving others to decide. I have my position, but that's neither here or there.

Acknowledged (and I agree) … but that is NOT what it says, is it?

Matthew 13:10-15 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith,

By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand;
And seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
For this people's heart is waxed gross,
And their ears are dull of hearing,
And their eyes they have closed;
Lest at any time they should see with their eyes,
And hear with their ears,
And should understand with their heart,
And should be converted, and I should heal them.

Numbers 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; Neither the son of man, that he should repent: Hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

1 Samuel 15:29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.

I'll deal with one of the verses you mentioned to stand for all:

And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people. He did not do what he threatened to do, and seemed to have in his thoughts and designs, but did what Moses desired he would, Exodus 32:12 not that any of God's thoughts or the determinations of his mind are alterable; for the thoughts of his heart are to all generations; but he changes the outward dispensations of his providence, or his methods of acting with men, which he has been taking or threatened to take; and this being similar to what they do when they repent of anything, who alter their course, hence repentance is ascribed to God, though, properly speaking, it does not belong to him, see Jeremiah 18:8.

- excerpt from John Gill's Bible commentary on Exodus 32:14.

I would prefer for you, not Gill, to deal with it.

The issue becomes putting passages that say God won't change His mind against verses stating that God did change His mind.

But I'm not arguing against you, anyway. I was just providing verses that stated "God changed His mind" because you had asked.

As far as I know, we don't actually disagree.

It is much quicker for me to copy and paste than to take the time to write it in my own words, words which will simply say the same thing that Gill said.
