Western world can no longer rely on the United States for leadership

Freeland questions U.S. leadership, says Canada must set own course

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says Ottawa will forge its own path on the world stage because Canada can no longer rely on Washington for global leadership.
...
“The fact that our friend and ally has come to question the very worth of its mantle of global leadership puts in sharper focus the need for the rest of us to set our own clear and sovereign course,” she told the House of Commons on Tuesday. “To say this is not controversial: It is a fact.”

Merkel urges EU to control their own destiny, after Trump visit, climate change decision

"The times in which we can fully count on others are somewhat over, as I have experienced in the past few days,” Merkel said Sunday at a campaign event in Bavaria. “And that is why I can only say: We Europeans must really take our destiny into our own hands.”

It sounds like this is what Trump wants so I guess he has succeeded. He has found some new pals for the US in Russia, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. A new alliance of free, democratically elected peoples fighting for human rights for all, freedom of the press, freedom of religion....

The UK, Australia and New Zealand have not publically stated this yet but everyone here in Australia is thinking it.

My question is why haven't you all been doing this already. the US has redistributed its wealth to help a world that has done little to nothing to help itself. Primary example is the Paris agreement where the US was to give 100 billion to who knows what. It's high time the rest of the word started paying its own way.

And yes that is what Trump and many many in the US want, for the rest of the world to stop being freeloaders.

To the contrary, for the first time in 8 years, the world can rely on the U.S. for leadership, including the citizens of the U.S. "Leading from behind" is doing everything others want and not taking care of your own, as Obama did. Trump intends to lead from the front. If Canada and Germany, cared about their own citizens, they would do the same, instead of expecting the U.S. to do it for them.

Dropping out of the UN worldwide redistribution of income scheme known as the Paris Accords put the free world on notice that freeloading on the U.S. is no longer encouraged. They have to pay their own way.

Unsure of the future of US leadership, Asian countries consider alliances to counter China

Inaugurating the weekend Shangri-La Dialogue, the region's premier security forum, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said: "In this brave new world we cannot rely on great powers to safeguard our interests.

"We have to take responsibility for our own security and prosperity, while recognizing we are stronger when sharing the burden of collective leadership with trusted partners and friends."

Baloney. The sky is falling!

Why? Because Trump actually did something to benefit the people he represents.

Oh horrors! What a catastrophe!!!! The world will end tomorrow!!!

Or they'll just have to pay their own way. What a novel idea.

These are direct quotes from Merkel, Freeland and Turnbull about not being able to rely on the US for leadership all in this past week. Which quote was baloney?

It's not the end of the world. Just the end of US western leadership. The US will now be second fiddle in Putin's boy band. Congrats.

.

All of them. Their feelings are just hurt because Trump did something good for the United States.

Poor babies. I hope they can get used to it.

Great we agree they all said that they can no longer rely on the US for leadership.

Great we agree they all said that they can no longer rely on the US for leadership.

So what? Their feelings...and their pocketbooks, are hurt. They'll come crawling around whenever they need something. We can agree that Trump is the elected leader of the United States. Sometimes that'll work out OK for the EU whiners. Sometimes not.

When they do come begging, I hope President Trump again does whatever is in the best interests of the United States.

That's the kind of leadership he was elected to show.

What business do we have leading other nations? They're sovereign. Let them lead themselves.

For 70 years the US earned that right with policies the western world generally agreed with and the financial and military power to make those things happen and a desire to cooperate with like minded nations to achieve those goals. That changed in 5 months. Others will take up that role now that Trump doesn't want it. You should be celebrating these statements as it sounds like you want The same thing. Party time!

And it's not our job to give them foreign aid, either.

Aid is help that a friend gives voluntarily. Trump and his supporters do not want 1) to help 2) to have friends that aren't dictators. Let's see how he reacts when he needs something from others in the future.

That changed in 5 months.

It did largely because primary leaders around the world have changed their values system. Our value system is we do not spend billions of dollars on propaganda created for the sole purpose of redistributing America's wealth. It is high time other countries spent their own money and stop sponging off us.

It is long past time the US stops trying to lead the world and starts leading it's own nation.

What are they saying now that said for decades that the USA is NOT the world's watchman, sugar daddy, arbiter, or policeman?

Of course. Foreign aid never happened in the US until Obama came into power. He also set up that pesky NAFTA, formed the EU, fooled the western world to sign the Kyoto Accord. That sneaky Obama has been manipulating world politics since childhood. Before Obama, nobody was foolish enough to believe in global warming or give aid to poor countries or join in multinational wealth redistribution schemes or hand over sovereignty to multinational treaties. The whole world changed their value system because of Obama. The Bushes and republican presidents would never have allowed the global value system to change and allow these terrible things to happen. What happened to the good old days when everyone was isolationist and dictators were your golf buddies. We need to go back to those lost American values.

It's time you folks and other nations like Germany and France stop relying so much on us for everything. We just cannot afford to pay the bill any more.
