Mark 9:43-48 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

What is Jesus saying here?

This passage of scripture recently changed my views on a particular subject. perhaps it will do the same for you.

Stop sinning. Remove the sin in your life.

I don't believe it means to remove temptation.

For example, if you have problem w/ porn, Jesus is not saying cut off your internet. He is saying to cut out the sinning.

And, given the sexual content of the passage, I think it is possible he is referring to masturbation w/ the right hand offending.

Whats his point when he references fire?

Jesus is teaching that nothing is more valuable than your soul.

Mar 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Mark 9:43-48 are not verses that are to be taken literally, although there have been persons who took these verses literally and cut their hand off, or poked out their eyes.

No, our hands, and feet, and eyes are very valuable to us. No sane person would cut off their hands, feet, or poke their eyes out. But these do not compare to the soul. There is nothing in this life that is worth losing your soul over. People do all sorts of things to get wealth, material goods, or power, but all that truly matters is your soul. If something is getting in-between you and Jesus, you need to get rid of it, no matter how valuable it might seem.

Jesus is speaking to Israeli's during the Tribulation. There is no "sealing" of the Holy Spirit during the Tribulation,
as there is now in this present Dispensation of Grace. He that "endures to the end" (2nd Coming or death) will be saved.
The Gospels were not written to the Body of Christ. Jesus only spoke the words that the Father gave him to speak.
Jesus didn't "know everything" during his earthly ministry.

Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you
I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
John 14:10

If sin prevents one from being born again, then nobody would be saved, because everybody has sinned. It doesn't matter if you quit sinning, your past sin is enough to damn you.

Trusting Jesus as the Lamb of God who died for you takes away your sin.

Jhn 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Simple, I don't follow 4th Century Catholic Doctine of "Replacement Theology",
I follow Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles. It's the Catholic Church that "elevates"
the Gospels above the rest of Scripture, and applies it DIRECTLY to "the Church".

There are "remants" of Catholic "Replacement Theology" throughout Protestantism.
Many try to "force-fit" Scriptures from the Old Testament
and Gospels and the Hebrew Epistles. I just stick to Paul for Doctrine.

That is complete insanity. From beginning to end, garbage.

he is NOT advocating us to do that literal, but is showing us that we need to seriously deal with sin areas in our lives!

I think these scriptures are directed to the lost to awake them to the seriousness of continuing in sin. Your sins that are so near and dear to you will take you to hell, flee from these sins as one flees from a poison snake. As Christ told the rich young ruler to part from his riches and follow him. The cutting off of the hand and foot is not to be taken literally but figuratively as John said to the Pharisees, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

...and the foot?

Excellent point.

16 There are six things which Jehovah hateth; Yea, seven which are an abomination unto him:
17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood;
18 A heart that deviseth wicked purposes, Feet that are swift in running to mischief,
19 A false witness that uttereth lies, And he that soweth discord among brethren. Prov 16

In lieu of applying the passage on an individual basis, consider Christ's words to be addressed to the corporate Hebrew Church (body), which before that generation passed away was to be inundated with false [Judaizing] prophets, teachers and messiahs that would lead them astray, i.e., “it must needs be that the occasions [of stumbling] come”. Christ is telling them that no matter how much it hurts they must 'put away the evil from the midst of them lest the many be defiled'. If you've ever had to exclude a church member then you know that it can be a very painful experience for all, especially if it's also family that is involved.

8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach unto you any gospel other than that which we preached unto you, let him be anathema.
9 As we have said before, so say I now again, if any man preacheth unto you any gospel other than that which ye received, let him be anathema. Gal 1

10 For there are many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision,
11 whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre`s sake.
13 This testimony is true. For which cause reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,
14 not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men who turn away from the truth. Titus 1

9 but shun foolish questionings, and genealogies, and strifes, and fightings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
10 A factious man after a first and second admonition refuse; Titus 3

17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them that are causing the divisions and occasions of stumbling, contrary to the doctrine which ye learned: and turn away from them.
18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Christ, but their own belly; and by their smooth and fair speech they beguile the hearts of the innocent. Ro 16

15 looking carefully lest there be any man that falleth short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby the many be defiled; Heb 12

8 Take heed unto yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit hath made you bishops, to feed the church of the Lord which he purchased with his own blood.
29 I know that after my departing grievous wolves shall enter in among you, not sparing the flock;
30 and from among your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.
31 Wherefore watch ye, remembering that by the space of three years I ceased not to admonish every one night and day with tears. Acts 20

2 I know thy works, and thy toil and patience, and that thou canst not bear evil men, and didst try them that call themselves apostles, and they are not, and didst find them false;
6 But this thou hast, that thou hatest the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. Rev 2

All in the same vein as:

then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father`s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the harlot in her father`s house: so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee. Dt 22:21

The hand of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. So thou shalt put away the evil from the midst of thee. Dt 17:7

I'm referring more to context found in Matthew's Sermon on the Mount where the foot is not mentioned. Both the eye and the right hand are set in terms of adultery and fornication. But the idea could still be taken (in Mark) about going to the adulteress woman as mentioned in Proverbs.

Same conclusion I've come to about the passage.
