I don't deny that that happens.

One of my favorite preachers of all time had no formal education and I consider him to have been brilliant- Spurgeon.

This is not what I am talking about.

As I said, if a man doesn't know at least the things I listed in my previous post then he should tread lightly when it comes to the weightier matters of theology. Spurgeon was self educated and he DID know these things.

Can he expound the Scriptures? I think so. I think there is still plenty of preaching and teaching for him to do.

BUT... if he does not have a powerful grasp on the deep things he ought to leave them alone.

The arrogance I am referring to that comes from the people that I am, whether properly or improperly, calling rednecks is that they do not have any REAL education, whether painstakingly self educating themselves or by sacrificially investing their energy and time in formal education- they have neither and yet they lack the humility to keep silent where they ought to keep silent.

This is horrific arrogance in my opinion- and it is far worse than the arrogance of the elitist who HAS a powerful education.

    -------------------------------------------------

Under the English school system, Spurgeon had a decent academic education. His theology was self-taught and learned under brilliant preachers.

    Cheers,

In his Sunday evening sermon on August 18, 1889, Spurgeon acknowledges that a woman [GASP!] instructed him in theology:

"I learned my theology, from which I have never swerved, from an old woman who was a cook in the house where I was an usher. She could talk about the deep things of God and as I sat and heard what she had to say, as an aged Christian, of what the Lord had done for her, I learned more from her instruction than from anybody I have ever met with since!"

    True Worship

True worship is individual; not corporate. We bring our personal worship together as a group. Any person who denigrates the worship of others is placing him/herself in a dangerous position before God. It is foolish to label the worship of God by His children as wickedness.

Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

The heart of the problem is the lack of theological education within our churches. A great amount of time is spent preaching from the milk of the Word with little or no time spent training believers to be proficient in the use & understanding of Scripture. Pastors are unable to train other believers because they have primarily been trained in public speaking; not in how to teach others from the meat of the Word. It is sad & a condemnation of our churches that so many of us must turn to sources outside of the local church for Biblical understanding & discernment beyond the most basic of truths.

This I understand, and can fully get behind. Have to think a while on how to explain why I support what was written here.

My Hebrew teacher was a woman, and she was teaching future pastors! Her teaching included the scriptures!

Like my mentors I loved to take a text like Jeremiah 6 and preach "Return to the OLD PATHS!!"

Okay let’s start here. First what it means to me and what it means to is make little difference. What does it mean to God?

Jer 6:16 “Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.”

Here is the image of travelers who are lost, stopping to inquire about the right way they once knew before they wandered so far off it.
Old paths refer to the Old Testament covenant and the Book of Moses, as Jeremiah called the people back to aforementioned days (the Old time religion for the Jews) and asking for steadfast devotion. The people obstinately refused to walkrightly and findrest. They also refused to listen.

Now how would this apply to use today seeing we are not under the Old covenant but the New?

Let look back at Jer 6 again this time in vs 15

“Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.”

Then as in now we need was to return to obedience.

nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: The people had lost all sense of what was right before God. We have done much the same. We want big churches so we let thing slide instead of hold the high slandered of holiness. they shall fall: then as nowwe will experience the harsh hand of God’s judgment . do not think we will escape Danel was taken away with the unjust in this judgment. We need to stand just as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood when it was hard to stand and trust in God.

My 2 Cent for what it is worth:tonofbricks:

Don, you have exposed on of Luke's favorite devices that he uses in his so-called debating. He often reverts to name-calling when his deceptive tactics have been exposed.
