Some years ago I handed a sailor in the U.S. Navy a gospel tract. He smiled and thanked me for it, and told me that he had "a whole footlocker full of them." I asked him if he had read them, and he told me that he had. We continued to talk and it became clear that although he had not yet accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit was ministering to him through gospel tracts.
On another occasion I was in an extremely poor part of a third-world country with a friend, and we were at a loss at to why the Holy Spirit had led us to that particular place. Therefore my friend opened up his Bible case to take out his Bible and a very bright, colorful gospel tract printed on glossy paper fell out onto the ground. A most pathetically poor and dirty little boy dressed in rags reached his had out and asked for the tract. It was printed in English and he could not read a word of it, but we gave it to him. Upon receiving it, his entire countenance changed from one of despair to one of joy, and he began tugging at us, asking us to follow him. We did so, and the boy took us to his home to meet his family.
The “house” was built on a temporarily dry river bed where there was no running water or other utilities, and there was sewage everywhere. The house itself was built out of scrap cardboard, sticks, and stones from the river bed. There were no glass windows or window screens, no appliances, and no furniture. There was no kitchen, no bathroom, not even an outhouse. The stench was horrific, but there were about a dozen children inside, the brothers and sisters of our new friend.
There have been times when I was in less than a Spiritual frame of mind when a stranger handed a gospel tract to me, and simply receiving the tract helped me to get back on track.
My favorite tracts are those that present the simple gospel message without any put-downs, especially if they are very bright, colorful gospel tracts printed on glossy paper
