Back to the original question, I'd say William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri might be a choice. They are historically linked to the Southern and American Baptists, but I'd say loosely. They have optional chapel services and many non-Baptist and even non-Christians attend there. In another thread I mentioned WJC (I am not an alum btw) and it was not well received, but when I say it is a good college, I mean academically sound. It was Time Magazine's Liberal Arts College of the Year. That may not impress you, but there were a lot of small liberal "Christain" school that aren't even academically sound.

That's it in a nutshell, though I'd probably say (as one whose current membership is in a liberal --CBF-- church) that we might be slightly to the left of "mainstream"; though not nearly as far left as some Methodists or darn near any member of the United Church of Christ.

I would probably add to your list Central Baptist Seminary in Kansas City (ABC/CBF) or any of the American Baptist Seminaries.

Nah, most liberals would find the Mormon cultural rules to be wayyyyy too confining...not to mention Mormons won't let women preach, either.

Honestly, I have met a few members of the BGCT on the BB and they all seem have the same thing in common. They are all bitter against the SBC. Now the "all" I am talking about is about 5 to 7 people. I have also read websites and articles on the web alot against the sbc and the "takeover" of the sbc. The BGCT appears in my eyes out to destroy the SBC(in texas at least.) Or should I just go ahead and call the SBC the "Empire" and call Mohler "Vader" and Paterson "Palpatine." How can a house divided stand?

When is the doctrine your school teaches more important than the great two commandments? When is belonging to a group(liberal or conservative) greater than belonging to Christ?

Honestly, I am going to be finishing up my undergrad soon and I am looking into seminaries ... Southwestern is the closet school for me, but do I really want to throw myself into that?

Joshua - I respect you in a great way because you are able to speak the truth you believe in(which is opposed greatly by many) and speak them in a way that makes not many angry and does not provoke one to wrath. You speak the truth you believe in, but you never forget the love aspect.

Liberalism is not just in a doctrinal statement but is borne out in its practice.

Therfore so many seminaries which claim to be conservative really are not, because the training they give is simply academic. The Pharisess could give out the academics but were disobedient.

Atruly obedient school which trains others to do ministry is in the process of giving itself away in training their students to disciple others.

Jesus did not make good students but disciples.

A teacher can have 1000 students in a classroom and not make one disciple. He may also have ten students and make ten disciples.

Hey all,

I have been offline for a while due to the beginning of a new trimester @ college--trying to get all inservice training done and such.

I would like to add "my two cents" worth.

I have posted my credentials in other places. But for this discussion I would just like to give a short "CV" for personal accreditations purposes: I am a Mid America seminary grad; Bible college grad; raised in an SBC church w/a Bob Jones pastor who baptised me, married me, and ordained me; Southern seminary grad since Al Mohler's term as president; have two advanced degrees from outside the SBC arena with one of them being and earned doctorate. I am part and parcel of the The Founder's Movement which will make some not even read past this point. I too can appreciate what the brother said above about the "primitive Baptists" and their beliefs of the NT Church.

Having said all that, I think I am qualified to offer at least some observations.

First. I think that one of the main problems has been that Dr. Mohler's turn of Southern back to the "Doctrines of Grace" or "Reform Theology" is at the heart of why he has taken a beating from the "friends of missions" or CBF bunch as much as anything. I say it kindly, but those folk love men and what men can do and have done. They seem to be tethered to the Enlightment and love what glorifies men rather than the "old Gospel of Grace" that glorifies God alone.

Second.
A brother above made a slip of the tougue and seemed to cut the "Puritans!" What may I ask is wrong with the Puritans? Do we hate their zeal? Do we hate their beinr lashed to the sovereignty of God in all things--even Salvation? Do we hate their commitment to the family? Do we hate their work ethic?

I would submit that the SBC NEEDS a 19th Century Princeton with some Warfields, Bunyans, Flavels, etc!!

No one has characterized liberals as "God-hating atheists." That's your straw man. It's the liberals, who are ashamed of the label, that try to protray themselves as Bible-believing Christians.

I heard this same poppycock at liberal SBC Furman University over thirty years ago. Don't look down your intellectual nose at poor ignorant IBFs. It's the liberals who cannot understand the profundity of orthodox fundamentalism. I have lived, studied and worked in the liberal milieu--I came, I saw and I conquered but they have never been able to rationally handle my Biblical doctrines or beliefs. Liberals are so notoriously nearsighted that they cannot see past the ends of their long intellectual noses. I found the liberal students to be the most biased, shortsighted and irrationally opinionated of all. They are indoctrinated and don’t know it. Political correctness has been around a long time but it has just gone under different names. IMHO, the ultimate prejudice is political correctness of the liberal students and scholars under whatever name.

Do you accept the inerrancy of Scripture? Do you reject evolution and accept creation as a direct act of God in a literal six-day period of time? There are simply two of the points that would characterize you as a liberal.

BTW, these are historical points of belief that separate the liberals from the conservatives. So, it's not just my opinion but also the historical division going back to the fundamentalist-liberal-modernism controversy.
