BTW, as far as digging up Alaska, that would be mining. The oil drilling they want to do in ANWR would cover an area roughly the size of Dulles airport, and it's in a place that is roughly the size of Germany and France combined.

Cheap gasoline?? I don't ever remember cheap gasoline!!

We're gonna have to face reality and then change ourselves to do something about it.

Dump the Expeditons and those "beastly" SUV's that we have "bowed down to" for so long and start driving cars that get 50 miles/gallon instead of cars that have 50 gallon gas tanks and get 12 miles/gallon.

I remember cheap gasoline... $0.19 per gallon during the gas wars on the mid 60's...

 

In the UK we pay around $6 a gallon or something near that. It is probably the same in Ireland. I am only 25 but I do remember cheap gasoline, I remember it from every trip I have ever taken to the USA.

There is definitely truth in the gentle admonition from Blackbird to get rid of the inefficient vehicles and use the more efficient and therefore more cost effective vehicles available.

 

Of course with the budget busting cost of gasoline... All those with new cars risk having them repossesed!

I know I don't have the income to support 1 new vehicle much less the two we really need, desperately...

I also remember when you could buy a car for a little more than $1000, chicken wings for 10 cents each, and Krysal hamburgers for 15 cents, but long distance cost you $2.00 per minute.

Costs change.

Instead of blaming the oil companies that had 8% or less of a profit margin, blame the world market. That's where the price of oil is, and should be, determined.

Not everybody that complains about high gas prices drives large SUV's. I drive a 1997 Plymoth Neon that gets about 33-35 mpg - and I still cannot afford much gas. Also, those stickers on the cars that promise 50+ mpg aren't that accurate. The Toyota Prius sticker says it gets 56 mpg, but Consumer Reports magazine tested the Prius and found that it got 44 mpg in real world mixed driving conditions.

Vietnam doesn't get 40 below zero with wind chills cold enough to freeze exposed skin in a few minutes like we do here. If you wish to walk or bike in the dead of winter that's fine, but I will take my car.

The LA Times tested and discovered that it got better than advertised. I would like to see a side-by-side comparison of the testing, just out of curiosity.

Here in Alaska, people walk year 'round. Not many bicycle in 3+ feet of snow, though. Many of them put on the mukluks and head out. Others simply put on the Xtra Tuffs and go. Some take snow machines to work, but they take gas as well. A few take dog sleds when visiting friends. Except in Anchorage, but Anchorage is just another big city.

I pick up kids in the bus when it's -20 and 3 feet of snow. Up in Fairbanks, where it get cold, they pick them up when it's -50 and 3 feet of snow. The kids still have to walk down to the main road; many of them walk a long way.

It can be done. Doing otherwise is a choice. (A reasonable choice, as I would not choose to walk 5 miles in 3 feet of snow.)

But, if you get a car that gets 35 MPG, assuming you drive 50 miles to work, an additional $1 per gallon only amounts to $15 per week. How much do you spend on sodas and bottled water and eating out?

 

Americans think they have a constitutional right to a job in the city, a home in the country, and a freeway that connects them. For the most part of human history people walked to work. Still could if they moved into town.

 

Well, I'm riding my bike the 5 miles a day to work. I won't do it when it's 13 below zero, I don't care how loud the eco-nuts scream.

I think it's because of a high rate of drunk bicycle riding and a high rate of high adventurers going into some questionable situations on off-road bicycles. That, and the fact that very few wear helmets.

Very little. I don't drink much pop anymore and I filter my tap water via the Brita pitcher and I like to cook.

What are you talking about why would anyone who loves the environment be screaming about you riding your bike??? and who are these so called eco-nuts who are against bike riding and transportation...perhaps these people are in favor of both..and doing it wisely..me thinks a knee-jerk reaction on your part Curtis.


Riding bikes is good for mental health and encourage anyone to do it especially Curtis...and President Bush cases who need that Serotonin fix(modulates the angst)
