telling them what they need?
well, here is the list of needs, which items do you think they don't need? Which ones would you say no too if it were you(not counting baby items of course, not everyone has a baby). I don't see the problem with giving people with nothing toothbrushes, soap, towles, do you?

PTSD does rob people of certain reasoning skills at times, and yes, there does need to be something to prevent another Superdome.
Buckster75 - Many of them COULD not leave. They had no transportation, no money for hotels, no place to go TO as they ran FROM. They had elderly who needed care and no way to provide it outside of their own house, so they risked staying. Some had no televisions to know they NEEDED to go.
Pastor Larry - The government promised them jobs and homes. Thus, the belief that they should expect it. When your government says, "We failed you, but we'll make it right, we'll get you a job and a house," you assume they mean it.

To the ones whining about "Government give away" - - you're a Christian. Christ said it is YOUR job to take care of the homeless, the poor, the hungry. If you did your jobs, the government wouldn't HAVE to do it.
You'll have to answer to the creator some day. How do you think He is going to feel about not only NOT helping, but complaining about the people who DID help?

lines and read the actual words posted. This is akin to bearing false witness in my mind. I did not comment once on what they deserved

You toss out the remark, "Where do I sign up," as if they are getting some wonderful gift that we should all hope for.
Are you willing to sacrifice everything you own in the world? Your home, your car, your clothing, your family and neighbors, the city you live in - so that you can "sign up" for government housing and $2000?
Your post belittles the suffering they went through.

We were in Rio Bravo some years back helping a church there with a summer feeding program with church funds. the meals were the only meal some of those kids would get that day. when a government official found out they cound make some money from it they took it away from the church and used gov. money raised the cost of the meals and they were not near as good as the ones which we provied. the gov. has no problem keeping the church out of "their" business when thay want to. but it will one day be turned back over to the church when the system has bankrupted itself. BTW none of my comments should have been taken the way i think you took them. hard to seen heart on the screen.

Beggars can't be choosers. These people are in no position to demand anything. Everything they have now is according to the mercy of all those around them. We didn't destroy their city. God did. So if they have a gripe they need to direct it to Him. Otherwise, they should just sit down, shut up and be grateful for help they have received.
You are right, I am selfish, cold, negative, hard hearted and filled with hate. I have failed miserably as a Christian. I am cold to the suffering of others. I have not followed my Lord's commands.

I agree that individual Christians are to help others around them. That is something that I try to do on an individual basis. However, we are also not ever commanded to do so as a government. As a matter of fact, the government does not constitutionally even have a right to give them anything. That is a right reserved for the individuals or the states. Furthermore, our history is filled with people in this country who went through terrible reversals and yet picked themselves up and rebuilt. My relatives in Oklahoma lost everything they had in the Dust Bowl. My great-grandparents, who emigrated here from Ireland during the potato famine, lived to see the little they had gained in that time give way to ruin and another famine. They did not get any help. They actually did not even leave northern Oklahoma. Instead, they scraped by and rebuilt their lives on the same dusty land that destroyed it. That spirit should be alive and well in our society today, not the spirit manifested by a hysterical woman on the news lately who proclaimed, "Who is going to pay my bills?"

Buckster - I do agree that it would be better for the churches, the individual Christians, not the Government. But - the vast majority of the churches are not doing it. They are waiting on the government to do it.
Fundamental Dan - I wasn't addressing my post in regards to the constitution of the United States. I am addressing it in regards to how Christ said Christians should act. I remember, very well, when Ronald Reagan told a group of people, "Don't worry so much. If we cut federal funds the private groups like the churches will step in and absorb the need because that is what they really want to do." But they didn't. They built bigger sanctuaries, and education centers, and multi-million-dollar Crystal Cathedrals, but they didn't increase their work with the poor and the homeless. In fact, the money given to missions has steadily declined over the years.
Until someone shows me any scripture that indicates that God Almighty would approve of Christians saying helping the citizens of New Orleans somehow UNDOES the words of Christ spoken in Matthew 25, I stand on the view that God's word says the attitude of "they deserve less," is unholy.
God said, "as you do to the LEAST of these." Where do people get the idea they can raise the bar above where Christ set it?
And a good number of these survivors ARE Christians. They are brothers and sisters in Christ. And when we get to heaven, and Christ says, "What did you do to help the ones in need," I wonder if you're going to have the courage to repeat the words to Christ that you post on these boards?

Gad promises to supply our basic needs, and He does,and has for the people in N.O. in many different forms.

I don't see musical instruments on that list. Would Christ deem musical instruments more important then food and water for people with nothing but the clothes on their back? Your verses don't mention musical instruments, it says food, water, clothes.
(side note, TS last week or so posted about wanting to give musical instruments and was mad becasue she was told they needed food, water,and personal supplies).
So get off your proud high horse and stop judging people for what you don't even know about them(wether or not they have done anything to help others).
I don't know where you are getting your information, but what I see, read, and hear, most of the help is coming from churches.
Our Union Baptist association sent a truck load of supplies to the Evangeline Baptist association in Louisiana.
Many, many Churches are helping with these people.

I am speaking of caring for the poor in general at the moment, not necessarily the Katrina disaster. The SBC was the first group into the Mississippi area. To be honest, I haven't heard anything in the news about them being in New Orleans or at the Houston Shelter. They may be there and not making the news though.

It seems to me that individual Christian's help the poor and needy alot, but we don't see the churchs as a group have programs or pantrys or whatever as much. Yes alot of churches do have them but it just seems to me that individuals go about these things on their own the majority of the time. And I think Christianity needs to get more active in helping the poor and needy and widows.
Believe me, TS---churches are there----helping---as groups and as individuals---and you know what??? Those churches are gonna be there and stay there and keep working there loooooong after Red Cross closes its doors and the last National Guard troop has gone home to his loved ones---churches have always been there---and have helped---and have given physical and spiritual food---and they will continue to do so until the Lord Jesus raptures us up---THEN--what will the Red Cross do????
The media ain't gonna give one ounce of glory to the church as long as it can point its camera at the Red Cross or at that Blackhawk or on that Coast Guard cutter---it doesn't see the importance of the church handing out pocket New Testaments along with their bottles of water or a nice soup meal with crackers and tea---not when there's a Coast Guard Sea Stallion "whirlin'" nearby---a little more fleshly thrill that appeases the carnal mind on the other end of the Television set!!!!
