Why take a chance when the police stop you?

I am surely not making light of any shooting involving the cops and any individual, regardless of the color of their skin; BUT, by now, everybody is, or should be aware of the rash/uptick in cop shootings of those who resist them during a legal confrontation.

With that kind of information on the streets, on EVERY major news network and being discussed around every family dinner table; can anyone tell me why people, especially black men, are still resisting arrest or being interrogated by the cops?

Unless the individual just crawled out from under a rock, one would think that with Ferguson, NY, Cleveland and now SC, everyone, and I mean everyone, dealing with cops would be as compliant and polite as Snip and do everything and anything they are asked to do by the cops; and never get into a scuffle, or run or both when deputy dawg has you by the long arm of the law.

Folks, I'm a white man, and for sure if a cop is questioning me I am not going to mouth off to them; argue with them; make them angry; reach for anything on my body or theirs; get into a physical confrontation with; and definitely never run. What will it take to get this common courtesy and good manners out to the general public, in order to keep everyone safe during an uninvited audience with your local constable?

And while I'm asking the obvious .... why are cops not more aware of the fact that we live in the YouTube generation, where everyone has a camera, and everything is subject to being caught on film and used to convict them of being being bad cops???

Wake up America. This is a new time and place, being stupid can get you killed and see you going to jail for a long time.

That's my rant, I'm sure there will be input, and I welcome it. I think we need to discuss how we get people to smarten up. This way we all win, and we stop with the dividing of America, in a racial way. We all need to live here and live here in peaceful harmony with each other regardless of color, gender or religion. :type:

I'll tell you what I've been told and this board gives testimony as such. Most white people don't have a clue as to how Blacks get treated by police. You're talking about still resisting arrest or being interrogated. These guys can be doing nothing and it results in scenes like this

It's called privilege. They are the cops. They can do whatever they want and have it justified by the blue wall. If other cops think the behavior is reasonable, then it's listed as a justifiable homicide. And when the DAs aren't gonna convict you even when there is video evidence(Rodney King, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, etc), then what do you care that someone is recording you?


You see how they Slager would have gotten away with murder had the video account not been gotten? The officers had already lied for him.

Pure foolishness. Those with good eyes understand that to old, white racially prejudiced people in the United States, the police are seen as an extension of their authority. To question the police is to question them.

Certain people think they can treat people any kind of way as an extension of the way slave owners used to treat their slaves. "Yessir Massa. If you say it, I's sure is gonna do it".

And racially prejudiced old white men who can't have their authority through slavery think they've got that authority again through police who think they can treat Blacks and anyone who disagrees with them any kind of way.

So save the foolishness. You're not trying to live in racial harmony. And you're not trying to get people to smarten up. You want black folks specifically to roll over and submit to your proxy authority wielded by the police.

You have yet to mention the cops needing to correct THEIR behavior. But then again, old racially prejudiced white men have thought for centuries that they should be able to just walk up to Blacks, cuss them out and the Blacks jump into submission.

Agreed, but the time to fight for your rights and defend your freedom is in court. Signing a tickey does not mean you admit to any wrong doing. It is only saying you recieved a copy of a ticket.

If you get hauled off to jail, there are attorneys, public defenders, and even bail. Sure jail is a scary place for us who have never been there, and it could be a costly adventure. Still, the time to defend your rights and any wrongs done against you is in and through the legal system!

I also have to agree with you on this. I have tried searching the web for stats that would show an increase in white cop black shootings, and there seem to be none to say we are under a siege.

I don't disagree that they are out there, and they need to be removed before they kill any more folks, regardless of the color of that victim's skin!

Granted there are a disproportionate number of blacks being pulled over and abused or shot and killed. There is also a disproportionate number of blacks in prison!

There is also a disproportionate number of blacks who commit a crime, and that seems to be directly related to the fact that these young men are being denied access to a good education, and there are a large number of single-parent families trying to do the job of both a mom and dad, and living in unnecessary poverty. Unfortunately, these young black men have the cards stacked against them from the day they are born, and that is as much part of the problem, as the bad cops. Probably even more so. Because I do not believe that all cops are bad and prejudice!

We need to be addressing what we, as a community and a nation, can do to fix what is broken in the raising of black children, especially black males. And we need to do what we can to get these young men strong role models and realistic goals in life. This is the only way we can put an end to what seems to be open season on blacks.

SO, instead of fighting with one another on this board, we need to be discussing what the church can do to get this problem a long term remedy. We need to be throwing ideas out there, and getting our local, state and national elected officials to do more to right the ship! Instead of sending money to countries that hate us, we need to re-route that money to the ghettos and barrios and get America back to what made it great.

If you've been disproportionately targeted, a large number have things on their records that their white counterparts do not even though they've been doing the same things. This is a good question. It does reveal, and I say this as gently as possible, how unfamiliar you are with the reality so many African American males face in our society. Because of so much violence, crime, media portrayal, ethnic portrayal, and lingering racism, African Americans males are too often suspected by our society. Don't get me wrong, idiocy is half the problem. So much of young adult African American culture is in failure because of their self-inflicted stereotypes.

My encouragement for any person who asks this question is to go and spend time in and among the urban poor, those African Americans who live in cities (since the vast majority do) in neighborhoods and sections that have been neglected by our civic leaders. Go and spend honest time with them doing ministry, feeding the poor, clothing the naked, being among them as an earnest participant in life. As a result, over a period of months, you will hear stories and see examples of how they are treated. You will see and hear how these things can happen. You will be able to have an answer to your question. But it takes time and proximity to them to truly understand.

If you act stupid or belligerent, you can expect them to react as police officers are trained to do to protect their lives.

Being human, they sometimes over-react.

My advice is to not to give them a reason to over-react. If you do, the least you can expect is to possibly be handled roughly and placed in hand restraints. The more you resist, the rougher you will be treated.

I've been watching the news accounts

1. The officer has the victim pulled over----and is at the driver side window asking questions of the victim

2. Officer is recorded by his own dash cam returning to his cruiser

3. While officer is gathering more information in his cruiser---the victim is seen opening the driver side door and exiting his vehicle

4. The officer requests that the victim return to his vehicle

5. The victim complies and returns

6. A short time later the victim is recorded by the officer's dash cam exiting his vehicle a second time and begins to flee on foot

The next videoed scene filmed by a passerby records the officer with his service weapon drawn and shooting the victim

1. 8 shots are fired

2. Unclear as to how many times victim was hit(highly doubtful he was actually HIT 8 times-----shots fired were not at point blank range and even as close as 15 feet distance---service weapon looses accuracy dramatically fast

I am interested in finding out what transpired between the time the cruiser's dash cam records the victim fleeing------and the time the passerby's video picks up the action-----something happened in that unspecified time period that caused the officer to realize his life was in danger and thus drawing his service weapon

I predict there is more to the story than the press is letting on----and at the most---the officer will be found 1. Guilty of conduct unbecoming and 2. Guilty of manslaughter
